My mom's next door neighbor's 19 year old son was bumping 2001 by Dr. Dre a few weeks ago and I heard him refer to it as old school. I almost took a swing at him.

I don't know what all you guys are talking about. The 90s were only ten years ago!
But seriously, for most of us, realizing that the things we liked when we were young are now considered old or classic is a tough pill to swallow. We all know that time is passing but we're rarely acutely aware of how much time has passed. There's also a factor of realizing that in our society, we've been passed by. I'm 40 now, on the older edge of milennial. I know I'm not the target demographic for much of anything anymore, but it still hits different when I hear just how old certain things I love are. Hell if I went dancing at one of the clubs today, I probably wouldn't recognize any of the music, which is a shame because I love dancing.
As far as classics, I still mostly think of the 50 and 60s as classic because that's what it was when I was growing up.

Even though 90s music is 30+ years old, the local alternative station still treats it as if it's fresh. The top oldies station stubbornly clings to 70s and 80s with 90s a close third.

It probably also has to do with who listens to radio. I only really listen to radio these days if the app on my phone fails while I'm driving. A lot of the folks listening to radio would probably resonate with the 70s and 80s more in general so they stick with that audience.

One of the stations here in town switched from kind of a FM Radio Rock/Classic Rock format to "we're playing what we want!!!" which just added some pop hits, sorry Eminem, and some 2000 era rock. Except they haven't nailed down how songs should flow all the time. It's jarring to go from Smells like Teen Spirit to Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch with nothing in between.

That which were on Oldies stations in the 80’s is still the oldies genre. The 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s get the Classic label. I forget the label applied to music from the aughts and 2010’s, but some classics stations play that as well.
Heck, the local station I listen the most doesn’t bother with labels. Half of what they play are modern rock and alternative songs (with a smattering of straight up pop music) while the other half are from the 60’s - 2010’s. It’s not uncommon to hear The Beatles followed by Nathaniel Raitliff followed by Laura Branegan followed by Tool followed by Adele.

Half the reason I gave up on radio is because too many of them pick a very narrow lane and stick to it. I love a lot of genres and eras and I want them all mishmashed together.

What makes me feel old (as a guy that grew up on 90s hip hop) is the kids today listening to hip hop not knowing who 2Pac or Biggie are. Obviously, it's not everybody... but I would say it's a majority.

All these terms ("Oldies", "Classic Hits"...) are just marketing terms Radio stations will play what enough people will listen to in order to keep them listening to the ads, and keep the companies who buy ads on the radio stations happy.
Eventually the 90's songs will fade from radio playlists just as songs from the 1940's and 50's have... as the listening demographic ages out of listening to the radio.

It's a combination of what people have said. It's branding, and in keeping that branding, it wouldn't make sense to say 90s is oldies...because the 50-60-70s are still being played as oldies. And the rise of streaming services means you can just load up whatever you want, it's going to be far easier to just refer to it as the decade it is then trying to label it something that may end up being confusing.

I think music hasn't changed nearly as much as 1960s to the 1990s. I mean there are entire albums you could release both today and 1992 and not sound dated. This is massive. I've said this loads before, but pop culture as it used to be kind of ground to a halt in the 2000s and 2010s, so the nineties just feels a bit less removed culturally from the present day than the sixties did in the nineties.
Also, I don't know how it is in the States, but on this side of the Altantic, the sixties is absolutely venerated by boomers who love bigging themselves up as the greatest generation ever, and bragging about how pop music was better in the sixties is all part of that. I don't think Generation X are quite as self important, and that's probably part of it.

I don't but only because I'm a radio dj and prefer my playlists to flow. I find it a turnoff if certain bands/songs are played after others and there's no flow.

This is very much a thing in the States, usually framed as "we had REAL music" or some such thing. I came across a line I really like. I don't remember what the original context was; it was either someone writing in to a sci-fi magazine or directly to a sci-offer to complain that 90% of sci-fi stories were crap. The response was that 90% of anything is crap. I think it's especially true with music, but because most folks have had limited exposure to what's out there until pretty recently, people make snap judgements about everything from genres to time periods without having much depth of knowledge about the thing they're propping up or putting down.

I've heard music from the early 00's on the classic rock station here. So it's already starting. Yeah. the 90's has been playing on the Classic Rock station pretty regularly for like a decade... the things that have the problems are the stations that play today's mix mostly... where they do 80's 90's and TODAY! ignoring Today takes up more time than both the 80s and 90s....
