...this is actually older than 50s music was when oldies stations caught on. So it is realistic to call them "oldies". But why are some people reluctant to do so?
Is it "not their childhood"? Don't think musical quality held up by then? Weren't fans and don't want to admit some of it can be legendary too? What?

Probably cause millennials got a stunted age thing going on? Lol. I’m not sure.
Did break my heart when I heard “All Star” by smash mouth on an oldies station a few years ago.

If we start calling 70s/80s/90s music oldies, does this mean we have to start calling music from the 40s/50s/60s oldies classical music now?

In the 1990s, I'd be baffled by anyone I saw dressed like they were out of the 60s. Today, I'm not sure anyone would say much if they saw me wearing my clothes from the 90s.

I've heard music from the early 00's on the classic rock station here. So it's already starting.

I think music hasn't changed nearly as much as 1960s to the 1990s.
I mean there are entire albums you could release both today and 1992 and not sound dated.

In Boston, WROR rebranded itself as "feel-good favorites", as opposed to "oldies" or "classics". But they still play a mix of 70's, 80's, 90's and early 2000's. The day I first heard Alanis Morrisette in the car on the way to work was a major system shock lol

I remember seeing ‘90s videos on VH1 Classic; that made me feel old. And the Goo Goo Dolls being referred to as a classic rock band at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

I think most people don't want to acknowledge that something they like would be considered old, or that something they grew up with can fall into that category. It's kind of a goofy attitude, but I can get it, because I was that way in my twenties. Nowadays I don't care how a song or artist is labeled because at the end of the day if it clicks with me I don't give a toss.

I was a 90s kid... doesn't bother me if people call it "oldies". I mean, the 90s were a long time ago, so it is old!

I think Oldies as a radio format differs from Classic Rock or Classic Pop because it largely refers to music that was popular to a largely white, largely suburban, largely middle class audience who came of age between the last part of the 1950s & the early 60s. I think it was a lot more to do with a specific social and sociopolitical moment then the more general CR term.

Everything i heard on the radio during my high school years has been on classic rock/oldies channels for at least 10 years now. Many a rants about how "CLASSIC ROCK IS THAT CRAP LIKE THE EAGLES AND LED ZEP! ALICE IN CHAINS AINT CLASSIC ROCK!!!" happened . Part of the reason I don't listen to the radio.

When Apple’s Classic Rock playlist has stuff like “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Black Hole Sun” 👴
Hell it was almost 10 years ago when the hourly old school show on the local “urban” station was playing Ashanti and Joe instead of Stevie B and Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam. That one was an eye opener.

I was a 90s kid... doesn't bother me if people call it "oldies". I mean, the 90s were a long time ago, so it is old! 🤦♂️🙄 I have said it before and I will say it again - unlike a lot of millennials, particularly people around my age range, I actually keep track of time. So I am well aware of how much time has passed and such. Hell, I have been watching wrestling from the 2000s lately and before people say that the 2000s are "too recent," there are some examples of how different things were from that era, especially the first half of that decade (2000-2004). Hell, rather than smartphones, people brought compact digital cameras to the arenas to take pictures. That is an example of how dated things are. Maybe it's because of my autism that I have a good perception of time, but I usually don't fall into the whole trend of "Now I feel old." I know how much time has passed and I do the math. It blew me away when I realized the movie Se7en going to be 30 years old soon. Well, yeah, it came out 28 years ago.

We should be getting to the point where the Jonas Brothers and One Direction start going on the classic stations. As someone that used to work at Walmart, I'm surprised the radio playlist was still clinging to songs from the 70s and 80s. I mean I doubt they were playing many songs from the 50s and 60s twenty years ago at Walmart.
