Following up on my previous post, let me also add this - as far back as 2014, I remember at my local community college, there was an event on campus and a throwback hip-hop and R&B station played on the speakers. Keep in mind that this was 2014 and this station used to play oldies and then moved to playing old R&B and rap. Then it started playing "All Bout U" by 2Pac. My thought? Well it was 18 years old at that point and figured it was old enough for that station.
So yes, I feel like an exception to the rule when it comes to this "I feel old" trend.

We need more of this shit. Half the reason I gave up on radio is because too many of them pick a very narrow lane and stick to it. I love a lot of genres and eras and I want them all mishmashed together. I don't but only because I'm a radio dj and prefer my playlists to flow. I find it a turnoff if certain bands/songs are played after others and there's no flow. Flow is nice, but when every 3 songs there's a few minutes of commercials, there's only so much flow that can be accomplished. That said, we can have flow while mixing in other genres. It doesn't have to be wild turns from Metalica to Garth Brooks to Beyonce. But some variety would be nice.

Chris Gaines, that's an album I haven't listened to in a long time. I still have the cd. But yeah I think Load to Chris Gaines could flow. Funny enough, I always felt that some of Garth's tracks as himself were more rock than most of his 'rock' album as Chris Gaines.

I keep hearing "people don't want to deal with being old!", but it's not entirely that. Referring to a song as "old" is a very broad thing. Recorded popular music has been around so long that something being "old" could vaguely mean anywhere in the last century. Calling Nirvana classic rock feels weird for the same reason calling Frank Sinatra classical music would sound weird. Terms like "oldies" and "classic rock" are becoming outdated terms because they were invented during a time when there was much more of a clear cut line between was old and new. Now you have several different eras of rock. So even though bands like Nirvana and Green day are 30+ years old, calling them classic rock is grouping them with bands that are an additional 30 years older than they are.
I personally don't care if music I listened to in high school is called old. I would just find it weird if a metal band from the 90s were lumped together with 60s rock bands.

This thread inspired me to check out my local classic rock radio station for the first time in many years. In the '90s, they played mostly '60s and '70s songs, with a bit of '80s stuff sprinkled in, but by the early '00s they had shifted to mostly '70s and '80s stuff, mostly hair metal. Well sure enough, now they play a lot of '90s bands like Green Day, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The few times I listen to classic rock stations, I NEVER hear anything from the 60s, aside from maybe Hendrix and 60s Zeppelin (and it's almost always from Zep 2, even the first Zeppelin album is too old for classic rock now I guess).

I had no clue so many people still listened to the radio.
Figured between streaming music,mp3s and CDs there really was no market for radio much. Outside of folks over 60.

Even the short few years there was a few bands I like getting radio play. First car had a CD player in it. And since then had that and some way to connect my mp3 player or phone to my car stereo. Pretty much now since YT Music comes with YT premium I use that when I want music in the car. But still got a huge case of CDs on the back seat.

I’m the same; I’ll flick between radio and Spotify when I’m working from home, but I’m amazed that tech savvy aged people phone up to make requests when they could find it online. I’m not knocking them, incidentally, just the opposite in fact as it’s actually quite endearing. Regarding 90s music now being thirty plus years old, while it’s weird for 48 year old me to comprehend it’s also a sharp shock to the passing of time. Some songs I consider modern were released circa 2005, which itself is nearly twenty years ago. However, I could hear the difference between a song released in 1972 and one released in 1992. I don’t think I’d get the same feeling from one released in 2002 and 2022.

In the 1990s, I'd be baffled by anyone I saw dressed like they were out of the 60s. Today, I'm not sure anyone would say much if they saw me wearing my clothes from the 90s. Dunno, I haven't seen a flannel shirt revival yet, but it might just be Portugal.

Not the radio, but I've been circling back to music TV stations and apps, good to have in the background, bit of a visual and they're not spotify or youtube no algorithm based on me so I'll get totally left field choices I'd forgotten or would never find.
