Alright, this topic floats around Twitter pretty frequently, so let me ask the question here: Who is the greatest American band?
A vast majority of the bands considered to be the greatest of all-time are British, so what about American bands?
There never seems to be a lot of consensus on this topic.
One note - for the purposes of this exercise, let’s consider Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty to be solo artists.
My pick? I would go Talking Heads or REM and I think you can make a good argument for either.

The Beach Boys for influence (they predate the British Invasion so are probably the US band with the least Beatles influence on their own work). The Grateful Dead for originality and lyrics and I’ll give a shout to The Foo Fighters for consistency.

KISS has been putting on great concerts for something like 50 years. Just for the longevity I have to put them first.
I think I would put Aerosmith in second place.

Blondie for me. That period from 78-82 when they moved more into the mainstream was glorious.
The Crickets need to be mentioned too. Obviously, losing Buddy Holly so early into their career takes away the longevity factor but the amount they packed into those few years was staggering and their influence is massive.

Those first 4 albums alone put Metallica top for me.

I wouldn't consider Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers a solo act, as for one, Tom himself didn't, and they don't feel like Petty + some other dudes - they were a proper band. So they have to be in the conversation.
Personally, I think the question, like so many things in music, is pretty subjective.

Although I'm not a fan myself, I'd say the Eagles are pretty big and popular.

The Doors. I always wonder just how much more they could have accomplished if Jim Morrison survived.

In terms of influence, I put it between the Eagles, Beach Boys, Velvet Underground, and Ramones.

CCR gotta be up there. Left a pretty massive legacy in only two-three years.

That’s a tough f***in question. Beach Boys have to be in the conversation, if for nothing else then Pet Sounds. Aerosmith is legendary, Foo Fighters seem to be creeping up that ladder (just released another amazing album, go check it out). I honestly don’t know.
