Some dark horses:
The Beastie Boys. Proving that white boys can rap and sell a shitload of records in the process. Van Halen. EVH revolutionized rock guitar with their first album. Guns n Roses has to be in the mix as well. Appetite through Use Your Illusion was such good shit, pals.
My answer is ZZ Top. Just consistent rocking and selling records for like 50 years. Fun fact: Billy Gibbons was Jimi Hendrix’s favorite guitar player.

Sonic Youth or Dinosaur Jr for quality, longevity, and influence

I think if you want to be objective the answer is undoubtedly the Beach Boys. Before they destroyed themselves they were the most ambitious and progressive music act on the planet. Very few bands have ever reached their level of influence or had it persist as long. A much rarer feat is that they have managed to outlast the bands they actually influenced. Gen Z indie kids will still listen to Pet Sounds while even Animal Collective are increasingly considered lame as f***. There are about ten other acts in the history of 20th century rock with that level of continued caché.
Other contenders are the Velvet Underground (But normal people have never and will never listen to them), the Stooges (ditto), Metallica (who formed a bit late to have a truly foundational influence on all pop music ever) probably Blondie (but 50% of people don't remember they're even a band) and possibly the Byrds (but half of their greatest hits are just Dylan covers). The Eagles sold a lot but uh, "Jesus, man, could you change the channel?"

Sonic Youth or Dinosaur Jr for quality, longevity, and influence Been on Dinosaur Jr kick all summer. The Ramones already been named, and would be my #1.Influence,lasted a long time and all that. Yea record sales were never big in teh US.. World wide they were bigger. I'm not a huge fan but Pearl Jam should be mentioned. lasted a long time so far, huge sales and tours.

I’d throw Sleater-Kinney into the mix, personally.
And for a “What could have been?” entry, The Replacements.

I would say Aerosmith, followed by Metallica and Kiss.
When you factor in longevity, music quality and pop cultural influence. Aerosmith edges out the other bands. They managed to evolve their music with the years and stay current. While they got a bit cheesy as they got older, they still seemed somewhat cool. They played the Super Bowl, they had a number 1 hit song in an action movie that starred Bruce Willis. You can't get any more American than that.
I personally like Metallica more than Aerosmoth. But because they're metal, their music is a little less accessible to the average American. And they had a few hiccups over the years like ST. Anger. So they get docked a few points.
Kiss is third to me. Obviously a huge influence over American culture. But their music is a bit of an afterthought and they've relied too much on gimmicks and novelty.

I think it’s The Beach Boys, but Foo Fighters are up there, as are Aerosmith, REM, The Cars, The Eagles, Metallica, and if eligible Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. Two bands worthy of honorable mentions for me are The Killers and Blink 182. Weezer and Smashing Pumpkins are on my long list too.
It’s interesting that no one has said Nirvana or Pearl Jam despite how huge of a game changer they were. Especially Nirvana, but I get it.

I wouldn't consider Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers a solo act, as for one, Tom himself didn't, and they don't feel like Petty + some other dudes - they were a proper band. So they have to be in the conversation. Personally, I think the question, like so many things in music, is pretty subjective. Tom and the Heartbreakers is my answer.

Styx is one of greatest American Rock Bands. And they only caught a bad rap because most critics are cynical assholes.

I mean, just to follow up on my earlier answer, I guess it would just be your personal favorite band who happen to be American wouldn't it? Just seems weird to me to say "this is the greatest American band" about someone who isn't actually your personal favorite.

I think all of the best answers have already been said in this thread, so I'll give another dark horse answer that may or may not be controversial.
I consider Black Sabbath and then Judas Priest the forefathers of heavy metal, which then gave way to Metallica to progress the genre as has already been said. But two American bands - Korn and Slipknot - progressed it from there and were absolutely integral to what heavy metal and rock music became in the 90s and 00s, for better or worse. They are also highly prolific and talented bands, which have put out a huge amount of critically acclaimed and commercially successful music over the last 30ish years. Based on longevity, quality, and influence, I think they merit discussion, even though they are kind of on the fringes of shitty nu-metal.
