CM Punk should have been fired. No question about it. But it doesn’t take away from the fact that Punk still meant a ton to business. At the time of his firing he was one of four wrestlers who consistently drew television ratings. Just look at the quarter numbers from this week and compare them to every other Collision. The viewing audience was cut by 50% from Q1 to Q8. That is unheard of for all AEW television, let alone Collision. It’s the same viewing pattern AEW gets for Dynamite where people turn it off as the show progresses with some slight peaks. Punk constantly held onto viewers throughout the show and would peak with the main event. Not to mention the previous PPVs they went against were far higher profile than Payback. AEW is in a fight for the health of Collision as a TV product. They’ll need it to succeed for the 1 bil TV contract. I hope they can figure it out. Yeah there was a big drop off following the firing/announcement I genuinely don't think these numbers mean much of anything in a vaccum. Punk being fired was big news, that had just broken before that show aired. I'm sure that a lot of people tuned in to see how it would be addressed, then flipped back over to watching the battle of the Carolinas. Nothing about that screams that people tuned out because they were outraged that Punk got fired, or something. More that they tuned in to see the fallout, but had other things to watch afterwards. If the Collision number stays 100,000ish lower than "usual" come January, then I think it will be fair to say that Punk was an inordinate "draw."

And here I am wishing college football will go away lol. Kind of glad Collision is on Sat nights as I spend my nights not watching anything because there is nothing on tv that is interesting.
-Lapsed fan who as I got older, grew to just hate everything behind it between conference realignment, treatment of student athletes, coach behavior, etc. lol

No, they don't. Nielsen television ratings are honestly about the most antiquated metric of trying to gauge a professional wrestling company's popularity in 2023. Obviously, they matter, but they're not the be all-end all they once were. AEW also has value in, say, being able to provide a shitton of streaming content for Max's library. Having branded partnerships with lucrative sponsors like DraftKings. Pulling in a large number of non-live viewers, either via DVR or WBD's various apps. So on and so forth. Wrestling fans have, for almost 30 years, been conditioned to measure success based entirely on Nielsen Data. Thanks, Vince & Eric. Anywho, AEW is fine (and not in the snarky ‘Bullet Club is FINE!’ way haha)…more than fine, actually, for a “pissant” “T-shirt company.” If there's one thing I hate the most from the Monday Night Wars, it's the idea of TV ratings are the only important thing. It's the idea that TV ratings are the one and only indication as to how successful or not successful a company is doing. The fact that we are dealing with that mindset a generation later is one of the biggest unintended consequences of the MNW.

I'm just glad I live in a region of the country that's generally apathetic about it.

I wish I was both on this board and the exact person that I am now in 2005 so that I could just post this every time RAW did a low number during College Basketball season

Not only were they facing a PPV and NBA games, Punk literally had 3 or 4 Angles booked around himself. They did the literal same mistake of putting all on punk and when he went away ,needing to rebuild everything. The whole show was based around Punk so you gonnas need to sell the show all around again, but to less people this time. Hey at least Punk fanboys can claim "See?!". From the very start, "All they're even advertising is CM Punk" was a complaint about Collision's roll-out. He was the show's top star with all their major stories entwined around him (including two of the show's seeming top heels being in PPV against him in the span of eight days) and most other major names for the company simply weren't around. Collision's identity and head booker are just up and gone now; it's going to take time to see how they rehab it, and any adjustment period is going to be shaky. Collision will need time to settle in and find itself again, and hopefully it comes out the other end of it looking better.

Speaking of Collision and college football: This Sat, Collision will be going head to head with Texas vs Alabama. TEXAS VS ALABAMA. So just a headsup to the Punk crew here, don't act shocked when Collision does a bad rating this Sat night. Don't use it as a way to say that everyone has turned off now that Punk is gone. It's gonna be bad because it's going up against a game featuring two of the biggest schools in college football. Just a headsup.

Yeah, Collision is going to get absolutely crushed this weekend and you'll have your people like see CM Punk was the only thing keeping AEW afloat! I don't think we can really have any meaningful discussion re: CM Punk as it pertains to Collision's ratings until January.

I don't think you need to like CM Punk to say the obvious... that a show that was built around him would suffer ratings-wise without him on it.
Sometimes you've got to call it what it is, a bad rating. Time will tell how much of an impact it'll have, but I think 'WBD were expecting this' is a bit goalpost movey given everything that was reported about this show before it debuted.

Woof...This is not going to get any better either Well, it'll probably get better due to not always having WWE PPVs to worry about, but football's still going to be an issue. Does college football usually run that late? Those games tend to be during the afternoon.

Those games tend to be during the afternoon. The feature game of the week, including Alabama v. Texas, tends to kickoff at 7:00 p.m. EST. It's going to do an absolutely monstrous rating and there's no question it will affect Collision's rating.

Those games tend to be during the afternoon. www.espn.com/college-football/scheduleCheck out the schedule: even if every game doesn’t feature a big-name school, there are plenty that start in the evening. Including right at 8 PM. I haven’t seen anyone else mention it so I guess I will. Was I the only one who saw the thread title and was confused about why someone would bump a month-old rating thread?

There's also the Wild Card and Divisional Rounds of the NFL playoffs on Saturdays, too.
But yeah, football always hurts wrestling ratings. It hurts Raw on Mondays between MNF and the CFB National Championship game. People shouldn't be surprised it affects Collision, either.

Haha, no I had the same reaction but just didn't say anything when it became apparent it was a typo. I was half expecting someone to be like see the ratings were WAY better when Punk was around.

I for one am shocked that the ratings pattern we all expected once WWE PPVs and college football went head to head has in fact happened as expected.
