I was just thinking about this. If the ESRB had existed in the 80s, which games for the NES would have gotten the M rating? I can definitely see Bionic Commando getting it due to the exploding head of Hitler Master D. The Golgo 13 games as well, if just for the premise (and the silhouetted sex scene in one of the games).

I could also se NARC and Chiller getting hit with an M but this is kinda hard since Nintendo had a notorious censorship policy during that period of time

"Bubble Bath Babes," "Hot Slots," and "Peek-a-Boo Poker" would likely be AO depending on the timeframe. It could be M if it was past the mid or late aughts because M-rated games could get away with nudity.

I'd even go as far as to argue that if Nintendo were still #1, M rated games on major consoles would either not be a thing or they would be eventually but through extreme pushback which the competition essentially did.

I don't think it was ever released outside of Japan, but I could see Sweet Home getting an M rating if it did get a domestic release. It was a Capcom survival horror RPG that heavily influenced the original Resident Evil. In fact, RE1 was originally planned to be a remake of the game.

Shaowgate would get an M-rating just for that creepy f***ing music.
Also it is fun to use the weapons on yourself and read what happens.

Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street given their source material perhaps?
Maybe Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde too.

If the graphics were more realistic probably a bunch of them.
You went around in Contra just shooting everybody who gets in your way.

Smash TV, maybe? It was essentially an even bloodier Running Man.

True, bloody copyright and red tape ruining our retro fun. Perhaps Capcom should try to work something out and release some sort of remake. Could be a few pennies in it for them.

I think there would certainly be interest out there, it's a game of a certain level of notoriety.

Especially the "hamster version." Wasn't there an NES Fist of the North Star?

This was my pic as, along with the source material, it's one of the very few Nintendo games I recall that used the terms "dead / died" in reference to the player frequently.
