I think I've watched most of it now. On the point about guaranteed contracts, a small difference to the tweet quote is he said "it's almost like guaranteed contracts ruined...." The almost qualifier leaves it open as to whether he thinks they're overall a good or bad thing, I suspect the former but who knows. However his point was he thinks some wrestler's focus has been taken away from what will draw the most money, biggest crowds etc. Not that anyone is lazy etc, just that priorities are misplaced. Fascinating interview overall though. I mean, sure, but that happened with WWE for so long. The company is barely about the live crowds because the live crowds will always come and people will always watch. It’s about what big companies are willing to pay for that guarantee audience and how much whole countries will pay for that prestige. This isn’t me saying they don’t matter, just that the widest amount of money isn’t from the Network or live crowds, it’s from TV networks, sponsors and streaming. If live audiences mattered fully, there wouldn’t be constant umms and aahs about where TKO will keep house shows going or not.

Do it for the love but secure that bag. And Jesse Ventura them by getting those residuals! This! Feels rare to say in 2024 but Jesse Ventura, star of the fiction classic “The Jesse Ventura Story”, had the right idea! I don't think the actual Jesse Ventura appears in that movie.

I think it was a good interview and he came across quite well
I'm glad he's happy where he is now and it definitely shows, he seems content.

Just to add too, slightly funnier that Punk calls Ariel a real journalist and about 40 minutes later, Ariel’s in a work shoot angle with Becky and Rhea.
It’s like your partner calling you the most honorable, dignified person they’ve ever met as you’re going out the door to cheat on them.

Fascinating interview. Worth watching rather than taking quotes from Twitter, whatever your opinion on Punk is. The bit about guaranteed contracts in particular is being taken totally out of context.
To be honest, if you remove all the petty drama, by far the most explosive quotes were about Vince. For a current WWE employee to compare him to Benoit, make clear he believes the allegations and say the business is better off without him... that's all totally wild.
Great job by Helwani too, who gets shit on here but asked everything anyone could ever ask him to.

This f***ing guy. Overshadowing aew ppvs wasn't enough, now it's wm and the events of basically every other company this week. Bad luck if you have a small show this week you were hoping to get some buzz for online, any publicity you may have got is now been eclipsed for the forseeable. Then at the other end people will be talking about this not Cody. And he acts like he cares about the business, he just wants to promote himself and he doesn't even have a match!
I'll preface by admitting I haven't listened to the whole thing but damn he's money obsessed for a Punk. Who cares about artistry, just make more money. And for those at the top who get the credit for drawing too, Mr workers rights doesn't care about the safety net for the rest. Then has the nerve to say he's the genuine one.
The way he twists things is amazing, I think he actually believes his own bullshit. People are out to get him and won't leave things alone when he's the one leaking stories full of blatant lies to keep himself the centre of attention. There was a bit about trying to have fun on collision or something and he sounded just like Logan Paul talking about Crytozoo, the twisting of things, false narratives, outright lies and more than anything a lack of any sense of responsibility.
Lucky that he's not like Logan and at his core has morals, even if his actions don't always match them, if he ever tried to use his powers for scamming or the worst type of politics he'd be dangerous.
And tbf he actually had a good response to Vince (unlike some) and was surprisingly unbitter towards aew as a whole.

Colt Cabana is not without his dubious history, but he continues to get talked about by his much more famous friend with little way of doing anything about it.
Punk calling out his mom was so low and shitty. Now we find out Colt tried to be the bigger man and Punk wouldn’t have it.

A funny thing about guaranteed contracts is that Phil would have been fired by two companies in two years for not being physically able to perform without them.

Lmfao @ even Punk telling Tk the two show, split roster thing was dumb AF. Man even told him to fire him because nobody liked him. Literally the same thing verbatim some fans were saying. What some of us were saying here. “I didn’t have to sign an nda for anything I did wrong” “This company’s a joke. You’re a clown. I quit” “He’s a nice guy. Not a boss”. “ doing this one and the recovery for this one, it’s night and day. It’s almost the comparison between places. Where there’s structure, there’s protocols. And there’s professional people in charge of things. And I’m not having to research and find a PT Spot. I had no help. Nothing. That’s insane to me. Is that how they treat the jaguars players? I don’t know”. “Their business, it’s not a real business. It’s not predicated on selling tickets. It’s not about drawing money. It’s not about making money.” “That shit does not fly on national television. I think it’s being proven right now. Maybe sometimes. Maybe some bites here and there. It’s not a sustainable business.” “If you’re more happy with some goof saying that you had a five star match, and the buildings a quarter full, we’re not in the same business.” Great interview. I was tempering my expectations but it delivered. Pretty fascinating interview. Helwani got a lot. Sloppy shop?

Yeah I don't think offering an open invitation to new colleagues to come and speak to you on any issues they want to discuss and at the same time not been willing to do so with the one person you had a lengthy personal court battle with is evidence of hypocrisy really. Calling out unprofessional behaviour and behaving as Punk did at the All Out press conference....okay I've got nothing there.

It's just such an odd thing to say. Even if you think in theory that guaranteed money makes workers lazy - it just hasn't played out that way? The folks I see on TV work pretty damn hard both in and out of the ring to put on a great show - much more so than previous generations. People clearly have pride in their work and there are plenty of incentives for them to do so. It's a clearly disproven theory (and obviously even if it was true, it's fine, the wrestlers should get paid). I don’t think his point is about being lazy at all. He even kind of pinpointed the concern when he said it seems they’re trying to get a “5-star match.” I think his idea is that they’re motivated more to get that 5-star match than they are about crafting something that will generate the most interest and draw the most money.

Calling out unprofessional behaviour and behaving as Punk did at the All Out press conference....okay I've got nothing there. The hypocrisy comes when after he assaulted the Bucks, their refusal to talk to him and direction of him to their lawyer got him so mad he took multiple on-air and post-show digs during the like two months he was on Collision, trying to pressure them into a program with him. So even on that front there's still layers where he looks like a hypocrite.
