#40 - The Year of Spectacular Men (Prime)
*1st Viewing
More like the year of mediocre men and pretty decent sisters. I didn't really like this but Zoey Deutch can do no wrong. [**]
#41 - The Day After Tomorrow (AMC)
*5th Viewing
My favorite disaster film ever but man, it's really scary in 2024 given how close it seems we are to this being a reality. [****]

14-Steel-Tubi
Was sure I rented this years ago, like in the VHS days. Watching it a bit ago I didn't remember anything from the film. Cheesy and not the best acted. But decent enough I would buy a Blu Ray of this for my movies based on comic books shelf.

11. Starship Troopers
This is SO Verhoeven. I think I prefer the grit of Robocop, but this is a fantastic companion piece, the weird feelings you get following these characters while knowing what they are. It's genius making basically a teen romance film in this fascist war setting. It has the amazing over the top style, but so clean while horrific, everything feels uncanny, a bit off and I'm here for it.

12. The Mechanic (1972) - Watched this on DVD. Recently, I had gone on a Statham kick, and I was interested in revisiting his version of "The Mechanic," but first, I felt like checking out the original version with Charles Bronson.
It has been a long time since I watched the 2011 version, so I can't compare them, at least at the moment. What I could say, however, is that this film explores the characters and their dynamic in a subtle way. It's clear that Jan Michael Vincent's character is a scumbag if you look closely. Also, the thing with Charles Bronson is that he always had that icy charisma about him. He may have been older, but he had that intimidating vibe about him. This was also before the "Death Wish" films, by the way.
Also, the action was fine for that era. It was the early-1970s, after all.

9. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023) 10. Gor (1987) 11. The Flash (2023)He put a baby in a microwave. I mean, I have more to say about it, but how do you get past that? The movie has its positives, namely Michael Keaton and Sasha Calle, but over-all it's a middling and messy affair that doesn't seem to quite understand how nostalgia, happy endings or CGI work. 12. Outlaw of Gor (1988)After I watched the first movie I kinda felt obligated to check out its sequel. Luckily there's none of that "Gorian lifestyle" stuff happening in this. Somehow this movie looks so much cheaper and more amateurish then the first one. While the first one was pretty generic, it did have a cinematic quality to it. This one looks like the sets and props were taken straight from a 60's TV movie. Everybody's acting is turned up to full ham. Jack Palance tries to bring some gravitas to this as one of the villains, but, as you can imagine, he has less then nothing to work with. I'm not sure I'd call it "so bad it's good", but it does have a perverse entertainment value from how horrible it is that at least makes it a more interesting watch then the just plain boring first one.

12. Die Hard
A month late to get into the Xmas movie stuff. I wasn't expecting this to live up to what people say but damned if it didn't. The pacing is impeccable, escalates exactly as it should, just amazingly made.

9. The Legend of Tarzan (2016) Re-watch 10. Mean Girls (2024)
I don't think this is as good as the original film or the Broadway musical. I did find it enjoyable. Most of the cast is good save for Angourie Rice.

13. The Mechanic (2011) - Watched this on DVD. After watching the 1972 film with Charles Bronson recently, I planned on watching this one, too. I recall having seen it, but I really did not remember anything except for the ending. That was it. Plus, it had been more than a decade. I wasn't sure what my opinion was. Maybe I found it forgettable because it didn't keep my interest at the time? I am not sure. Now that I have revisited it, I could say that I was entertained, but there are still some flaws to it.
I like Jason Statham. I enjoy a lot of his movies. Some may be a little stupid and over-the-top. Some may be a little more serious grounded. It really depends. I will not that a long time ago, I had no idea that this film was a remake. However, I'm not one of those people who always lose it when they hear something is being remade. I really don't care, because there are some remakes that I do enjoy. With that said, even though I forgot about most of this film, I know it was not completely a remake of the 1972 original, save for the story involving a hitman and his protégé, who just so happens to be the son of a man the main character had a history with and also killed. Of course, the Bronson film and the Statham film showed the dynamics with the other character, as well as showed the methods to do a hit.
I was entertained by the action, but I won't pretend that some of the shaky cam and quick-cuts made things a bit incoherent. I know it was a common thing during the 2000s to early-2010s to have these quick edits in action that makes it hard to follow. I did like how in one scene, Simon West (the director) paid homage to John Woo's style with the wall barrier shot (I'm not sure what to call it). For those wondering, it's when the camera shows one person on one side of the wall and another person on the other side of the wall. Sometimes the characters will be back-to-back.
As for anything else, I wondered if there was any point to the sex scene. I know that a lot of action movies in the 1980s and 1990s had a little nudity at times. Sometimes even in films during the 2000s. Maybe Simon West tried to go for that? It's possible.
I found myself enjoying it, but I do think there were some issues.

I understand the use of the flashbacks but it made for a disjointed story at points. There's a lot of heart here even if it doesn't hit as well as it should have. [***]

I'm such a sucker for the friends-to-lovers story in rom-coms so I ate this up. Plus, Maya Erskine is everything here. [***½]

14. Mechanic: Resurrection - Watched this on Blu-ray. So I've watched the 1972 "Mechanic" film, and then the 2011 version. Now I watched the sequel to the latter, which even when I heard about it back in 2016, I was like "that movie is getting a sequel?" I will also note that I saw it in theaters at the time, but it was on discount day. Plus, I had very little recollection of the film, other than it was set in Thailand, Jessica Alba was also in it, and also Tommy Lee Jones playing a rich guy going through a late-life crisis given the soul patch, the earrings, the circle Lennon sunglasses, and his fashion sense.
This film's predecessor had some over-the-top moments, but I think this film went a little more in that department with the action. I think the predecessor had a decent balance in the action, but here, I think this one is more in line with the likes of the "Crank" films and "Transporter" films, and maybe the recent film, "The Beekeeper." However, I would say "The Beekeeper" is a better action film in some respects, because while this film did its job with the action (despite a lot of the quick edits), there were plenty of clichés that I have seen in many action films. With this film's protagonist being a retired assassin, he's pulled back into the life because his love interest has been abducted and became collateral, one of the targets he is iffy about killing but finding a way to cover it up, one-man army stuff where he is unstoppable. I have seen plenty of action films and I can name off a lot of clichés, but for some reason, there is a dullness to some of the plot, especially the film's villain.
On the plus side, Jason Statham and Jessica Alba had some chemistry and their romantic plotline didn't feel forced. I also liked the scenic shots for the locations, and that kill involving breaking the bottom of a swimming pool that is at the very top of a building and right off the roof was interesting. Again, it did its job with the action, so I can't complain in that regard. It's really more of something to put on if you're bored. I wouldn't call it great, but it's not boring in the action department.

29. SAVAGE (2011) I made a mistake. I saw the movie was directed by Jordan Blum and thought "Oh wow, the Blumhouse guy directed a movie?" The timeline seemed...okay. As if he may give it a shot before going "Nah, I can have other people make them and make cash," but...no. Blumhouse Blum is Jason Blum and SAVAGE, the movie where a fire causes a Bigfoot to have to come out of hiding and wreck some fools, is Jordan Blum.
It. Was. Okay. Martin Kove is in it doing a "mountain man/redneck" character. That was something at least.
This is the only movie Jordan Blum ever directed, which is one more than I've ever done, so good for him.
30. WANTED MAN (2024) Dolph Lundgren's directorial debut stars Dolph Lundgren as an racist cop who gets "cancelled" and is forced to do a PR mission of escorting two Mexican eyewitnesses across the border in an attempt to calm down the heat he's facing. The only problem? Well, cartels, mainly. So, can Dolph perhaps learn that other people are also human beings while attempting to keep anyone alive to share their tale?
It's okay if not a bit iffy on the plotline, especially the kind of absurd end reveal. Kelsey Grammar is here as Dolph's even more racist ex-cop buddy.
31. FEAR (1990) A psychic who uses her abilities to track serial killers (or their potential victims) to help the police prevent the crime has the inconvenience of the latest serial killer also being psychic and deciding to give her a bit of an UNO Reverse Card by bringing her along as he picks out and wipes out victims.
Ally Sheedy plays the psychic and does a good job with it. The presentation of the psychic "aura" is really bizarre and actually helps build the tension of what's going on. Film was written and directed by the same guy who came up with the ALIEN NATION movie and TV Show.
I liked it.

11. The Flash (2023)12. Outlaw of Gor (1988) 13. Furry Vengeance (2010)Another find on YouTube, and, honestly, a movie I've been avoiding. Mainly because it stars Brendan Fraser and I know it's going to be bad, and I don't want to accept that there are bad Brendan Fraser movies. It just makes the world a sadder place knowing that. But yeah, this is pretty atrocious. Stupid plot, contrived situations, bad jokes. There are some surprisingly strong names in this besides Fraser (Wallace Shawn shows up at one point!), but none of them have anything to work with in the slightest. And I genuinely have no idea what's supposed to be happening during the closing credits. This had to be the lowest point in Fraser's career.

15-Bring it On Cheer or Die-DVD
Yea I saw the original Bring it On what 20 years ago. Wasn't bad and it is one I have revisited. Seen a pile of the sequels cause she loves them, not sure why. 2 years ago got told there was a new sequel and it was a slasher.
Not bad really. For a modern slasher it isn't a full on Scream rip off. Decent kills ok plot ok acting. Doubt it did that well. Maybe without the Bring it On title it might have done better. But worth seeing.
