2024 New Releases #6 Priscilla
Plucked from her mundane life, Priscilla enters into a relationship with the most famous and desired man in the world. While this might read like the set up to your standard Hallmark romance story, the stark age difference between the two immediately adds a sharp edge of unease. This unease only builds throughout Sofia Coppola’s expertly executed slow burn as the fairytale romance is undermined through controlling behaviours and microaggressions.
Having seen Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Elvis’ when it came out in 2022, it’s difficult not to view these two films as companions to each other, although they really could not be any more different from each other. While ‘Elvis’ is over-the-top, shiny and chock-full of enjoyably ridiculous accents, ‘Priscilla’ is a far more grounded, muted affair with performances from Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi that heave with passion and sadness as it asks the question of how much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice for the love of someone else? And how much is too much?
VERDICT: Adept direction and incredible chemistry between the two leads brings immense weight to this complicated story of love, control and power.

11. The Flash (2023)12. Outlaw of Gor (1988) 13. Furry Vengeance (2010) 14. Fanboys (2009)Another YouTube movie. Hard to believe it's been like fifteen years since Netflix first recommended this for me. For those not familiar, it's the Fall of 1998 and four geek buddies, as well as the requisite hot geek girl that's always in these types of movies, go on a cross-country road trip with the ultimate goal being to raid the Skywalker Ranch and watch a workprint copy of The Phantom Menace months before it hits theaters. Pretty uneven movie. There are some really good moments. In fact, I'd go as far to say as there are some moments of pure brilliance (I'm looking at you William Shatner). But there are also a lot of bad bits and annoying gags that go on way too long. It's a solid enough ninety minute time killer, but doesn't feel like it ever reaches the potential the concept truly had.

*3rd Viewing
We need more gay rom-coms. [****]
#51 - Scary Movie (Max)

Gonna rewatch this franchise to see how they hold up over time. Some jokes here certainly didn't age well but it's one of the better parody films out there. [***½]

15. Shakes the Clown - Watched this on Blu-ray. Here I am closing out the month. I was torn between this and something from my personal collection. Because I had requested it before through a system in which other cities in my state could loan out their items, I had to return it the previous time. So I decided to watch it this time.
I remember seeing the title for this film on TV listings as far back as the 1990s and also coming across it at Blockbuster Video and Hollywood Video, but I never gave it much thought. I am not sure what led me to seek out this film. All I knew about it going into it was that it was star vehicle for Bobcat Goldthwait, who also wrote and directed this film. However, watching this film, I didn't expect there to be appearances from Adam Sandler (before he got famous; I think this was early in his SNL run), Blake Clark (who often collaborated with Sandler and the late Jim Varney, as well as voicing Slinky Dog in the later "Toy Story" films), and Robin Williams (Yes, really). Oh, and also Tom Kenny, who is best known for voicing Spongebob Squarepants, played the main antagonist of this film.
With all that said, I would say this is a hard film to describe. It's clear that it's mainly about the struggles of an alcoholic clown who performs at children's birthday parties, struggles in his relationships, whether it's with his friends (who are also clowns) or his girlfriend. In fact, it's kind of weird how it also shows a community of clowns and mimes. There is also a plot element involving being framed for a murder. But really, it does have its appeal if you're looking for a quirky, yet dark comedy. I mean, I found myself laughing at certain points, but this is not a film I could recommend to other people, especially coulrophobes (people are afraid of clowns, FYI). I enjoyed it, but I know that it was maligned when it came out. With Bobcat Goldthwait writing the script, directing, and starring in it, I wonder if this was a passion project for him. I heard it bombed, but I am not sure if it was released to masses. Maybe it was a limited release.
I might hold onto it for a little longer because I noticed a commentary track. I might go through it again just to listen to it.

58. Mr. Saturday Night (1992) - often funny with some good elements of drama, it's not perfect but it was a story I had investment in and built up really well to it's finale.
1 February
59. Titanic: Disaster in the Atlantic (1929) - not the first Titanic movie but the first sound one and it's... how do I describe it, awkward performances with some unintentionally hilarious (I laughed at loud at how terrible one scene was), but there is some memorable moments in a good way (often when it's not trying to do it's dialogue), it's not the most dynamic Titanic movie, so not sure I can recommend it. 60. The Cable Guy (1996) - you all already know the response it got at the time, but it's a film I always liked even back when I first saw it in the 90s, was good to revisit it after a few years.

13. Furry Vengeance (2010) 14. Fanboys (2009) 15. The Iron Giant (1999)Another find on YouTube. So, confession time, I've never seen this movie before. At least not in its entirety. You'd think I would've caught it at least once during the various marathon showings it got on Cartoon Network back in the day, but no. But yeah, a cute and touching movie that I really should've checked out a long time ago.

Dubs don't match the subs, which are partially cut off on the sides. Bad VHS rip. Still so much of this films dialogue was burnt into my memory. First time viewing and gotta find a better copy. Cause this appears to be a great film. Just bad bad bad transfer.

A gutwrenching film that is some of Robin Williams' best work ever, which is saying something. [****]
#53 - Eileen (Vudu)

Thomasin McKenzie is so relatable. I too am infatuated with Anya Taylor-Joy and Anne Hathaway. That said, this movie is intriguing at first but the third act twist never really hits and then the film kind of just...ends. [***]

16. Breaking In (2018) - Watched this on Blu-ray. I recall seeing this in theaters in 2018 on Discount Day and thinking it was fine. Sure, it was formulaic when it came to home invasion movies, but I enjoyed it okay. Something led me to requesting it from the library. I thought, "why not?"
When I put it on, I realized that there was an unrated cut on the Blu-ray. Because it had been years since I last watched this, I decided to go with the theatrical cut. I will get more into the other version later, but now, I will just say that I see that there are a lot of clichés, but really, what movie with this sort of plot doesn't? Hostages with one person being courageous, one of the members of the villain group having a conscience, and another from the group being a psychopath.
With that said, it's a short movie that you could put on to kill an hour and a half. I wouldn't say it's great, but it's fine enough that I still find it entertaining. I wasn't annoyed. I know some people have criticized Gabrielle Union's acting, but she was convincing as the concerned mother
As for the other cut, I looked on the Movie Censorship website, and it appears that this film was originally supposed to be rated R. There was more profanity and violence, but the theatrical version was edited for a PG-13 rating. Maybe down the road, I will watch that version.

I feel like this movie should be much gayer than it is. Also, Adèle Exarchopoulos is quite a woman. Anyway, this film is a lot of fun. [***]

3. Leo
Adam Sandler is a fat talking lizard helping children through their last year of grade school. It’s a decent story as long as you can deal with the ‘Adam Sandler goofy voice’ and the entirely forgettable and unnecessary songs.

15. The Iron Giant (1999) 16. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)Another streaming re-visit from last year. Not much to say about it honestly. It's not a bad Indiana Jones movie, but it's not a great one either. It's a mostly middling affair that's hurt by its excessive length. Hmm, I wonder if I should rewatch the old Indiana Jones movies? It's been awhile since I've seen any of them.

#55 - Orion and the Dark (Netflix)

I appreciated the unique Kaufman aspects of this but what really stood out to me was the use of colors. It made for one of the prettiest animated films in recent memory. [***½]
#56 - Shortcomings (Netflix)
*1st Viewing
There's no doubt that the protagonist is unlikable but I think that's part of what works about the film. It's more of a character study than anything else. I think it's well written and Sherry Cola does great work to steal the show. [***]

No 4: Trespassers, 2024, Netflix.
A really clever dark Japanese comedy that flew by. Three women in dead-end jobs with boring lives decide to rob the apartment of their boss who they believe to be corrupt, a fair few twists happen over the course of the night.
