#57 - The Terminal (Showtime)
*10th Viewing (but I've seen parts of this a ton)
Watched this with my mom today and realized that I quote a lot of things from it to this day, all in Hanks' accent. I love this movie. [***½]

15. The Iron Giant (1999) 16. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023) 17. Cat City (1986)So last year, on Night Flight Plus, I was introduced to a Romanian 80's animated movie called Delta Space Mission. This is another entry into that genre from Hungary. Who knew Cold War-era Eastern Europe had such a robust animation scene? For those not familiar, in the far future on Planet X, mice and cats have developed a civilization patterned after late 20th century Earth when a group of sadistic gangster cats start a campaign to destroy mouse society. One mouse secret agent begins a journey to obtain some kind of device to stop them. That description makes this movie sound much more interesting then it really is. It gets bonkers at times, highlighted by weirdass musical number and surreal comedy bits, but for the most part it's sluggish and boring and thinks it's way funnier then it really is. That said, it does have some really fluid, really crisp animation that feels very in the vein of classic a Warner Brothers cartoon.

32. THE PREDATOR (2018) Shane Black's not-so-glorious return to the franchise that had to reshoot its entire end sequence but doesn't change the fact that things just didn't flow as well as they could. The humor feels hit or miss. His Tourette's character feels like a transfer from 80s script but I can't be 100% critical because the Predator taking a dismembered arm and using it to give a thumbs up is the type of humor I'd make with friends when getting through a day at work. The absolute ending is the only thing that feels like a reshoot and it's ridiculously silly.
33. THE ANGRY BLACK GIRL AND HER MONSTER (2023) Subtly is for cowards. It's a creative take on the Frankenstein story with only one exceptionally cringe reference to the Public Domain inspiration. Hiring the voice of Doc McStuffins as your Mad Scientist is some sort of meta casting Hall of Fame stuff.
34. BODIES, BODIES, BODIES (2022) You don't need likable characters for a movie to be good. This was a heck of an A24 production. It felt like a modern day "Murder Mystery in a Mansion on a Dark and Stormy Night" but with a cast of super high 20-somethings and Pete Davidson who are all incapable of sleuthing and thus things just dissolve real fast. Oh...and what an end revelation. Yeah. This one hit me just right.
35. FREELANCE (2023) Action Comedy without much action and virtually no comedy. John Cena isn't funny in this and if I've learned anything over the last few years, John Cena can be very funny. This thing is just...I don't know, not good. I don't want to be mean about it, but I was incredibly bummed at how disjointed it felt to watch.
36. UNSTOPPABLE (2010) THE TRAIN WON'T STOP. Denzel Washington is so daggone good in every thing he does. I don't know how I hadn't seen this already. It's a thrill ride from start to finish.

#58 - The Island (Paramount+)
*1st Viewing
Like a dystopian YA adaptation but with adults. Though a world with two Ewan McGregors and two Scarlett Johanssons doesn't sound too bad. [**½]
#59 - Man Up (Peacock)
*1st Viewing
Had they kept up the misunderstanding plot for the entire movie, I wouldn't have liked this. But they resolve that early on, really allowing the characters to develop. Due to that, this ended up being a charming rom-com led by two likable leads with great chemistry. [***½]

13. Con Air
Bit disappointed, I know I should expect it but the bad guys were over the line of cartoony moustache twirling. Also the really obvious cutting away on gore to bring the rating down, I'm rarely a huge fan of it but more gore or more skillful editing would have improved it a lot.
Of the airplane hijack movies I've seen, Passenger 57 is still at the top.

16. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023) 17. Cat City (1986) 18. Little Giants (1994)So with the Super Bowl this weekend I figured I should watch this, the most celebrated football movie in cinematic history. Ok, maybe not. As another poster said, this is also on YouTube. It's one of the many kids sports underdog movies from the 90's that came out in the wake of The Mighty Ducks. It's probably one of the better movies in regards to those imitators, although a definite step down from its inspiration. Special mention goes to Ed O'Neill, who does a great job of giving the "villain" more depth then you'd expect from a movie like this. 19. FernGully 2: The Magical Rescue (1998)So here's a movie I genuinely never knew existed. Another YouTube find. For those not familiar, Crysta, Batty and their friends travel outside FernGully to rescue some animals that were kidnapped by poachers. It's a pretty boring and paint-by-number story. The animation is really unimpressive, the characters have a more cutesy design then the original movie. And all the voices were re-cast (and honestly, the new VA's were not bringing their A-games), so don't go watching this expecting some forgotten Robin Williams performance. Honestly, it is over-all a pretty crap movie and I feel I was better off not knowing it existed.

14. Blade Runner
Now THAT's a movie. Prime only have the theatrical cut. But I loved it, the narration added to the noir vibe, the ending was clearly tacked on. But damn, how on earth wasn't this a success when it came out? It's so atmospheric, thoughtful, almost ethereal. Can't say enough about it.

A musical starring Anna Kendrick is right up my alley. Unfortunately, this one mostly misses with a disappointing male lead, mostly forgettable songs, and a confusing to follow timeline. Kendrick delivers as usual though. [**½]

18. Little Giants (1994)19. FernGully 2: The Magical Rescue (1998) 20. House II: The Second Story (1987)So YouTube is recommending me Creature Features again, and when I saw this I couldn't resist it. I don't want to get too deeply into discussing this franchise in general as it gets very complicated as it goes, but I do feel I should mention the story behind the first movie to properly convey what's happening in this, it's sequel. The first movie was originally conceived of as a typical Haunted House horror movie. Then they made the unusual casting choice of giving George Wendt, at the peak of his popularity, a supporting role. The director then felt there was no way anybody was gonna take a horror movie starring Norm from Cheers seriously, so he added a lot of humor to it and turned it into a horror-comedy. Despite the movie being a mess, it made bank, and so a sequel was commissioned, much more heavily leaning on the humor side of things. For those not familiar, Jesse decides to move back into his families old mansion after his parents were killed there when he was a baby. He's quickly joined by his friend Charlie, and all manner of crazy follows. This includes Jesse's great grandfather returning as a zombie cowboy, random time portals opening up, them adopting some kind of prehistoric bird and caterpillar dog, rescuing an Aztec virgin sacrifice who comes to live with them, and the magical crystal skull that seems to be controlling it all. And in the tradition of George Wendt, everybody's favorite Boston Mail Man/Rebel Officer/Piggy Bank John Ratzenberger puts in a memorable appearance. This is honestly an amazingly fun movie. It's not gonna win any awards, but it is like an absolutely perfect 11PM-basic cable-just a little bit drunk movie. I can't recommend it enough.

2024 New Releases #7 American Fiction
After hearing good buzz from it's US release late last year and it getting a bunch of nods during the awards season, I decided to check this one out.
Jeffrey Wright plays an academic author frustrated by exploitative pandering 'black' fiction decides to write the most stereotypical story he can. Despite his efforts to lampoon the issue, it's a massive success and his professional pride must be swallowed to alleviate his personal circumstances.
While not being laugh-a-minute, this is a really clever satire on how race is portrayed in fiction. Jeffrey Wright is fantastic in it, and while the elitist Monk (think Frasier but more upr/tight) isn't the most likable all the time, it has a really strong cast of supporting characters that fill the story with plenty of sweet moments.
VERDICT: Deserving of all it's plaudits, a strong lead performance from Jeffrey Wright centres this very funny satire on race in media. Definitely worth checking out.

This film is stressful, cringe, and makes you uncomfortable. That's the point and in that sense, it works really well, especially thanks to Emilia Jones and Nicholas Braun. That said, the third act is a mess and this has no business being two hours long. [***]
#64 - Upgraded (Prime)

A charming little rom-com that gave me Emily in Paris vibes and shockingly, I mean that in a good way. [***]

2024 New Releases #8 The Iron Claw
While it was released in the States last year, this has only just been released in Ireland this week. There's no point in me summing up the story as I'm sure everyone here already knows.
As with all 'Based on true events' movies, there's a fair bit that's condensed and modified for the sake of the story, but for the most part it's pretty faithful. The film does a good job of making you care for each of the individual brothers and even though I knew what was coming, it was obvious the movie was doing its job in that at each turn of misfortune there were audible gasps of shock and despair from the unwitting audience members.
It's hard to say I 'enjoyed' this film as there's little joy to be had, but I was impressed at how the story was told and the performances of the entire cast.
VERDICT: For wrestling fans, this is a fairly faithful retelling of the sad story of the Von Erichs. For non-wrestling fans this is a well performed story of the dangers of familial pressure and endurance in the face of deep personal tragedy.

4. The Holdovers
A cranky reacher, a disgruntled teenager, and a mom who just lost her son are stuck together in a Massachusetts boarding school over Christmas break of 1970. Super well acted. Definitely worthy of the awards it has won.
