#255 - Love Lies Bleeding (Apple TV)

Was not expecting a giant lesbian at the end. I've seen the reference made before but it fits: this is basically A24's She-Hulk. [****]

`Somehow I'd never seen the original that started it all. A pretty unsettling 10 minutes and a very cool idea, even if the acting is pretty shit. [***½]

97. Inside Out 2 (2024)
I think the first movie is better, but I do like how this deals with the mental health aspect.

101. Shin Godzilla - Watched this on DVD. A friend of mine had mentioned this to me. I decided to give it a try. I am a little mixed on this. In fact, a lot of the positive things I could say is that I appreciate that it's a bit of a darker take on the kaiju genre, particularly with Godzilla. So there is more at stake here, as well as political themes to go with it. It also felt more like a horror film in some areas and also took it self seriously. I think a lot of those aspects of this film worked. However, it was kind of slow at times. Yes, I am aware that a lot of these types of films have more focus on the story, especially with the human characters and there are usually a handful of scenes with the monsters tearing through the city.
I have a feeling that some of why I couldn't maintain focus on this film was because I was tired. I will give credit where it is due, even though some scenes were slow and a bit boring. Maybe I will give this another watch in the near future.

A lot of this was really well done and it's aesthetically stunning but it seems to be trying to be too many things at once and it struggles to juggle it all. [***]

Pretty good though probably a bit behind the other installments. I do like hearing Jack Black as Po though. [***]

28. King Fu Panda 4
Po sets off in search of his replacement as Dragon Warrior. The story is entertaining. The twist is completely obvious. The final battle is totally underwhelming.

155. THE MANCHU EAGLE MURDER CAPER MYSTERY (1975) Written and directed by Dean Hargrove, who produced such mysteries as Matlock, Perry Mason, and Columbo, this movie is a spoof of those type of stories. We follow a "Poultry Engineer" who sent away for his Private Investigator license (which totally counts even though they misspelled his name on it) as he is brought into an absurd plot of local nonsense. Some really zany stuff in this one (including the Grandpa from The Waltons playing a corrupt doctor who dips into his own supply and the guy who played Boss Hogg on The Dukes of Hazard as an absent minded scientist).
156. SUITABLE FLESH (2023) Re-watched as part of Joe Bob's Last Drive-in Show on Shudder. Holds up for the most part, even if I would've preferred to see what Stuart Gordon would've done with the content.
157. MURDER BY DECREE (1979) Sherlock Holmes investigating Jack the Ripper where the source material used would later be modified to make the FROM HELL movie starring Johnny Depp. This is directed by Bob Clark, whose filmography is outright insane when you look at it (The original BLACK CHRISTMAS (1974), PORKYS, A CHRISTMAS STORY and BABY GENIUSES).
Christopher Plummer is really good as Sherlock Holmes.
158. THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT (2022) Absurd as I heard and as enjoyable, too.
159. I WONDER WHO'S KILLING HER NOW? (1975) A comedy that was being made for Peter Sellers until he died of a heart attack. It follows a deadbeat husband who gets busted for embezzling on the same day his wife informs him a divorce is coming. Desperate, he sells his beloved paintings (all forgeries, of course) and uses the $25,000 raised to hire a hitman to murder his wife to cash in a million dollar insurance policy. However, when he discovers that his plan won't work, he has to scramble around to call off the killing before it's too late, but (OH NO, THE WACKINESS!) the hitman sub contracted the hit, so he has to keep tracking down hitman, after hitman until he finds the one actually intent on killing the wife.
Just...not good at all. Really bummed me out to watch so many jokes just flounder, flop, and fail. Goes for a "Mad, Mad, Mad World" feel by having the main character toting around the extra hitmen as they all quip about the latest situation and it's all just bad.

#259 - Just Go With It (MTV)

Another in a long line of harmless rom-coms. Aniston and Sandler are solid together, which brings this just above average. [**½]

80s Eddie Murphy is kinda untouchable. Also, that theme song is fire. [****]

There's nothing more 2003 than the 10 or so minutes of this film from "My Immortal" to "Bring Me To Life." This movie sucks but in a hilarious, entertaining way. [*½]

2024 New Releases
#28 The Idea of You
Anne Hathaway plays Solene, a 40 year old single mother who literally stumbles into a whirlwind romance with boy band lead singer Hayes Campbell aka not-Harry Styles.
When it comes to rom-coms, I tend to prefer ones that lean more towards the com side of things than the rom and generally how funny it is determines my level of enjoyment. This movie is not amazingly funny. There’s a few quips here and there that’ll raise a chuckle, but no killer lines or over-the-top moments that’ll be remembered and compete with When Harry Met Sally or Bridget Jones.
Despite that I still found myself enjoying this movie well enough. This is mainly down to Hathaway's charming performance and the connection between the leads is undeniable. I've plenty to nitpick (there are a few contrived scenes early on, Hayes’ backstory and what he ultimately chooses to do with his future doesn’t really make sense and the final act feels like a pendulum swinging back and forth on will-they-won’t-they in a way that’s quite jarring) but overall, I actually quite liked the movie more than I thought I would.
VERDICT: A fairly easy-going, perfectly pleasant love story with a few laughs, a decent message and great chemistry between the leads. If you're like me and it's your girlfriend's turn to pick the movie, then this is one of the better rom-coms that they could pick from on Amazon Prime.

70-Whip It-Blu Ray
She chose this for the first movie of the double feature tonight. Swears we watched it years ago. I do not remember any of it.
Good cast, decent soundtrack. But 1 hour 50 minutes is LONG. cut 20 minutes and improve the pacing some.

Yeah, it's not good but I am in love with Zoey Deutch and Aubrey Plaza so... [**]
#264 - Colombiana (Netflix)
*2nd Viewing
The first time I saw this, I was getting drunk with my friend and halfway through, we stopped paying attention. Watching it in full, it's about as good as my drunk self remembered. Saldana is good, the action is solid, and the story is generic. [**½]

82. Down Periscope (1996) 83. Capricorn One (1978) 84. Back to the Future (1985)For those not familiar, this is the 100% historically accurate tale of how Chuck Berry wrote "Johnny B. Goode". So after watching Capricorn One I was surprised to discover the entire Back to the Future trilogy was on YouTube. Unfortunately I have been crazy busy at work the last two weeks and only now just had the chance to finish up the first movie. Not sure if I'll be able to get to the others as it wouldn't surprise me if they're off YouTube at the end of the month. Oh well. Anyways, all time classic movie. Great story, great casting, everything just came together perfectly. One question though. When they test the DeLorean on Einstein, it returns frozen and covered in ice. The same thing happens when Marty returns to 1985 at the end of the movie. It does not happen in any of the other movies. I was willing to chalk it up to Doc just fixing the issue when he added Mr. Fusion and the hover mode, but re-watching it I realize it did NOT happen when Marty first arrives in 1955 either. Has this ever been explained anywhere? Or are we all just willing to live with this continuity hiccup?
