Dude couldn't do it well last time and I've got no faith he'll do well with it this time. Good luck to AEW tho. I just don't wanna see stars complaining on social media about why their ranks don't mean shit this time.

Also, rankings somewhat by their nature are designed to foster debate and discussion. You don't want them to be so absurd that people don't pay attention but they can and should be open to debate.

I would love to see a ranking system that encourages backstage violence. If you're able to ambush a champion and beat them up in the toilet; you're the #1 contender. The more violent the attack, the more title shots you earn. Would you really want to ambush Samoa Joe on the toilet? No, but I would like to see Wardlow try. I like to think it would look something like this🤔

The rankings committee choose as the new number 1 contender... Alabama?! Son of a bitch!

I feel like it can be good if done well. The problem was a combo of 1, statpadding guys on Dark so you have a case where the Gunns had like a 60-0 tag record, and 2, TK having his long term booking in his head and just ignored the rankings like when FTR were number 1 ranked for months but nothing was done about it cause “the plan” is something else.
Not to say longterm booking is bad, but you have to take into account the ranking system when you do it. I mean it’s basically fixed since you book who wins and loses lol, so make the tv and the rankings match up together so it actually makes sense. You can do weekly preliminary rankings, but the last one should be the official rating, give guys and girls time to rack up wins when they know they only have 30 days to do so. You can even create feuds from the matches after like “you cost me being number one now i gotta put my t-shirt in your baby’s crib”. Use them to make fun tv, not just nerdy number shit.

The problem with it is the wrestlers who are at the top of the rankings don’t need a title/title shot as their W/L records keeps them over. I think this was the problem with the tag rankings as random teams got title shots either to introduce them to the audience or pad out the champs title defenses all the time FTR sat at the top of the rankings looking like chumps for never getting nor asking for a title shot.
Most optimistic bet is Danielson now working as an ideas guy or filter/checker for TK’s ideas means it might run more smoothly this time.

You can't pad your stats when there's no AEW Dark. And IMO, ROH shouldn't count either.

I’ve always adored the idea of a rankings system and if done right it could be a refreshing change but this feels like adding a bucket of water to an already drowned booking writer. He basically has to have a ton of shit already planned out way ahead in advance or we’re going to end up in the exact same spot as last time. I don’t think it’ll work again.

I'd take a cue from later ROH and have people declare for a title division.
Only matches between people in the same division count toward the ranking but you are not limited to facing people only in your division. For example, Mark Briscoe is in the TNT division, Jay Lethal is in the International Division but they can still wrestle each other, it just won't count to their spot in the rankings.
The Continental Crown is not tied to a division though, owing to it being three different titles.

The Bucks not bothering with their title shot for so long they ended up losing it. The extra ppvs and Collision since last time make this interesting too. As do the additional titles. I can't see them lasting long.

Good. I liked the rankings and didn't want rid before. They just needed a bit of refinement. Now what that is I don't know, I'll let TK and co work that out

Yeah, the challenge with anything like a ranking system or any other "strict rule" gimmick is that it inevitably runs into a situation where a booker wants more flexibility to set up a different title match, or a different push for a different wrestler(s), or an angle that works outside the boundaries of the normal rules, or some other kind of situation where you want to adapt on the fly but run into an overly rigid system that prevents you from doing it. When you're booking multiple shows a week plus pay per views, it almost becomes a sure thing that at some point the booker will just drop the strict rule because it's inhibiting too many potential ideas.
That said, I think a ranking system works so long as it's focus is to facilitate feuds and stories and if it's allowed to be somewhat flexible. I agree with taking a page from pre-buyout ROH's book: establish a kayfabe "championship committee", make wrestlers declare that they're going to be aiming for a particular title for whatever length of time, then name five wrestlers who are in contention as a result of their recent results plus past history. The committee (which can be completely off-camera) can then also allow for exceptions where some matches can happen or individuals get their shots based on their history or specific circumstances that warrant bending the rules - e.g. Copeland debuting and getting a shot early on against Christian for the TNT title, again given both Copeland's championship pedigree and also his history with Christian, but guys in the "contender's circle" (another old school ROH thing) for each belt are still slated to get a shot and/or have to maintain their rank by winning matches.
But again, the key has to be that the rankings facilitate stories and potential matches/feuds. I remember it working really well when Hangman got high up in the World title rankings, only to lose a featured match to Brian Cage, which meant he had to pick himself back up. Similarly, you can have a guy who's doing alright but can't quite win the big one decide he needs to shift his focus towards the International or TNT title and have that be part of their longer-term story. You can also use this to make clear which belt is the most exclusive - the midcard belts will be defended more regularly against a wider array of challengers, while the World title rankings will be much more, for lack of a better word, elite.
Just, again, don't get caught up in things needing to be done in an overly rigid, inflexible fashion, because that's the surest way to shorten the lifespan of rule-based gimmicks like this.

It's not something I care for really but happy to be open minded and see what happens. Feels like a new year, new era type thing they're going for right now so this fits with that. I'd have rather they found a middle ground between giving title shots out of nowhere and a full ranking system personally but the product was at its hottest when this stuff was there before so as I say, open minded about it. A lot of people missed them too so it's cool they listened to that portion of the fanbase.

Good, I have said theys hould bring it back. I loved the rankings and I feel like the booking started to lose focus when it went away. I'm excited. Precisely, some people say that the companies remove away ranking when they want to book something. But that is precisely why you need rankings, constraints breed creativity and it is a tool to keep consistent storytelling and as you said, keep focus.

Rankings can be good, but sometimes you really do just have to go with the hot hand. During the last rankings, The Acclaimed were only ranked number 2, but on fire popularity wise to the point people wanted an audible called during their tag title match. While FTR were ranked number 1 for months and held all the tag belts from other companies. I know Tony likes to protect guys, but if you run into a situation like that..then you have to acknowledge your rankings and do something about it. Don’t just ignore it cause it’s convenient, have the team/person you want to push RIGHT NOW beat the number 1 ranked team/person you don’t want to push right now. It’s not the end of the world if somebody takes a clean loss.

I loved the rankings and am glad they're back. I just want three things to happen with them:
1) Nobody sits at no.1 for weeks on end without either a title match happening or being scheduled 2) There's a bit of freedom with them. Give the champions some agency so that they can't deny the no.1 ranked wrestler a match, but they can defend against other people if they want to. Don't stop open challenges or other ways of crowning a no.1 contender 3) International Title has nothing to do with the rankings and remains fully an open challenge title. They could do this with the TBS title as well

He got mad people thought a child beating D tier talent on a C show getting a title shot was a joke…and this dork decided to add more math.System sucked before. It will suck again. What’s the point of being #1 contender when you aren’t next in line? If you have to do this (and you don’t) don’t do rankings based on kayfabed weighting of match results. Have a system where a pool of people are either qualified for title contender-ship or need wins to get qualified. That makes match results more important in a way that is easy to understand, separates the haves from the have nots, and is an easy story to get behind someone trying to work their way into the contenders pool
And it ended up with Seth tearing his MCL which was karma for those WWE fans that harassed TK online(I wish Seth a fast recovery though)
The previous ranking system issue was having wrestlers padding their stats on Elevation and Dark.

Without having about 20-30 untelevised matches every week to juggle and keep track of, the ranking system is probably a lot more streamlined. The system worked in the early days of AEW in part because of consistent vision, but also because pandemic era Dark got massively expanded (all the way to a second show) to try and keep a lot of wrestlers working and fresh even off of TV. It was a good idea, and it helped people a lot, but it led to a lot of problems for the rankings and for having to factor in tons of filler matches. I think having a clearer, more streamlined seto f matches allowed to matter will make the ysstem workj a lot better this time than it did with the Youtube bloat.
