Current Rotten Tomatoes score is 59%. Since reviewers seem to usually be a lot more generous to shows than they are to movies that's kind of not a great sign.
I'll probably sign up for Netflix and watch it in a bit but kind of not in the mood right this moment.

Saw the first episode just now. First thoughts:
-First, thank you Netflix for removing all the humor and goofiness like the movie. Clearly what we wanted was a gritty, dark take on an upbeat light-hearted comedy. You f***s.
-Gran-Gran in this version is a dick.
-Zuko looks like he has pink-eye.
-Aangs actor is...not the best. I know he's a child and probably trying his hardest but still. Not the worst child actor but could be better.
-I like the set/costume designs.
-This is yet another case of "As you know..." in an Avatar adaptation. Can someone please just deliver exposition naturally?
-Irohs actor is probably the best so far.
Overall not the worst but I'd probably like it more if it was an original show and not an adaptation of a beloved cartoon that's already on Netflix. There's only eight episodes so I'll see how it goes.

I'm about 4 episodes in on this, they've smushed some of the animated series time line a bit, I get it time & budget constraints mean they can't do a one for one recreation but it does feel a bit "cherry pick the best bits for the show" with some random new bits added in because they felt like something needed adding. some of the new added in stuff makes sense, some of it doesn't. also... {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW}Secret Tunnel! **edit** Iroh is pretty much the best thing in it so far.

I have a question for those that have seen both series as this show is getting bad reviews, while the other show did very well. My question what did the One Piece live action series do what this series didn't?

My question what did the One Piece live action series do what this series didn't? I haven't seen this but what One Piece has done better than any other anime adaption so is while having to condence so much story they nailed the overall tone and cast pretty damn perfectly the central cast and it doesn't look like a cheap cash grab , there is an authenticity to the adaption. Also helps that Oda was there from the start ensuring they do not f*** up his baby.

So about halfway through the pilot now and... Ehhhh? I'm not disliking it, think it has things to like about its presentation - visually it looks pretty nice, in practice I can kind of respect that it is trying to do something different helped by how there is still certainly a dry sense of humor about it, there are some cute nods to the original, most of the actors seem to be doing fine so far, and it does definitely kick the hell out of the Shyamalan version.
That said something sort of hanging over this whole thing is that it's just... Really deeply silly? It seems so strange to be going so violent and brooding and morbid for a show where you're having people talk about the "Air Nomads" and "Fire Nation" in dead serious ways in between semi-graphic depictions of people burning to death and whatever, especially when mixed in the middle of it you're having stuff like the original opening credits being repeated word-for-word as exposition. It just feels really goofy, almost farcical in how it's taking these aspects that worked well enough in an animated kids' show and trying to pass them off as SRS and adult in a live action setting, there's just this underlying dissonance that really doesn't work. Devoting soooooo much of the opening to the Air Nomads being genocided also feels like a mistake, it's just giving way too much of the semi-limited runtime to stuff that really doesn't need to be seen for the story and due to the aforementioned issues just feels very edgelordy. Even just toning down the violence and coming up with actual names for the nations would help this adaptation a looooot, though admittedly that wouldn't help how utterly ridiculous Aang's Peter Pan flying is. No idea why they felt the need to add that.
Also Katara's actress seems really wooden so far, not really helped by how they seem to have sanded off a lot of her personality in the writing.
I dunno, maybe it'll settle in as it goes, just so far I'm having a very hard time taking this seriously even while there are things I'm enjoying about it.

Can’t say I’m impressed so far. Sokka’s story especially lacks any of the nuance that the animated version had.
It’s better than M Night’s version but that takes zero effort.

Episode 4: Iroh's actor is carrying this show on his back. I legit got angry every time they cut away to the Gaang this episode because I just wanted to see more of him.

About 20 minutes in to the first episode and some early observations.
My son was so excited to watch this because he LOVED the cartoon and that horroshow genocide opening might have just put the kibosh on watching this at all. By far the most intense thing he’s ever seen.
And I’m less than thrilled at the exposition dumping and wooden acting so far. My wife has wayyyy less picky standards on these things and even she turned to me and said “This acting is rough”

Netflix did give Zack Snyder a fat check to make Shoprite Brand Star Wars, so this being a dull slog makes sense.
Doesn't mean it isn't disappointing.
Just write up the name of everyone involved in the creative direction of this adaption and stick their names on a "Never Ever Hire Ever" list.

Okay I am going to say it, it is totally on the table if this show makes to the end, that Azula gets redeemed. This show has took so many liberties, that it is on the table.

Just got through the first episode and it was pretty alright. The source material is a masterpiece and this adaptation seems, at worst, to be a serviceable, high-budget live action advertisement for it.

I'm having the issue that I stopped watching halfway through the first episode even though I wasn't super down on it since I just wasn't in the mood, and kind of running into an issue that I really just find myself with no desire at all to resume watching it. It's crossing my mind occasionally but I'm just like, "Or I could watch something else," on it, even with me having finished catching up on Kaguya-Sama which has been the main thing I've been watching instead.
I dunno, might also be hurt by never having the highest opinion of season 1 of the show in the first place. Like, it's good, but soooo much of the original's reputation specifically comes from season 2.

Did this show just drop off everyone's radar only a week after its release? Is it the Netflix binge model the reason why these shows can't seem to sustain?
Seems like Aang himself, this show simply upped and vanished like a fart in the wind.

Seems like Aang himself, this show simply upped and vanished like a fart in the wind. Its reception isn't quite as bad but it's reminding me a lot of the Cowboy Bebop remake. Shows up, ton of viewers right away with semi-decent word of mouth, then quickly it just completely falls off the radar and only the people who hate it still particularly care about it. I'm guessing this one won't get axed before a season 2 like that one was, but it wouldn't shock me if it doesn't make it to season 3 since the longterm interest really doesn't seem to be there and this show has to be expensive to produce.
