Yeah, not a great look from Mark. Yes, money makes things complicated, but I just don't understand how these guys can't understand that the money is part of the manipulation and abuse. Buying a victim's silence doesn't mean the victim is suddenly OK. Also, your son just signed a NIL deal and you're trying to get back in the company's good graces, maybe you don't need to go on record about the former owner's sexual abuse? Sheesh. Not to mention how stopping those contractually obligated payments is itself another form of abuse. Vince agreed to pay her this money after what he did to her; him withholding it is absolutely a way of exerting control, believing he can get away at least sometimes with just f***ing over his victim again and leaving the only option as having to chase after him in court and reopen herself to the trauma. It's all calculated. Yep, a lot of the times, people that are victims of those that are positions of power won't come forward, both because of them having to relive a horrible moment in their life and also because they won't be able to afford a lengthy court battle like their abuser would be able to. |

One of the saddest (and least known) aspects of trauma is that it literally alters and restructures the brain. Among other things, this often leads to trauma being spread from the victim (singular) into their victims (plural), spreading and spreading unless one really does (if one even has the means to) take the time to process trauma with professionals.
Part of the reason Henry does not even consider the accuser's legitimacy as a person is rooted in precisely what he accuses her of: taking money as a way to accept repeatedly induced trauma. When he says that, he is simultaneously reaching out to his own self, tortured and traumatized at the hands of Vince.
Of course, Henry's issues may go well beyond trauma; this is when someone being a downright malicious, remorseless, or Machiavellian type comes into the picture, resulting in such dehumanizing language.
This sets up a terrible dichotomy in the traumatized person's mind, where they are unable to process how someone else who was traumatized and abused by their abuser actually broke free in an effort to save others and administer justice.
Henry has been so deeply traumatized by Vince that he cannot comprehend that a colleague is actually trying to break the cycle at last. To this end, the confrontation of his demons and systematic change are so daunting he is potentially not even aware of what is going on, which brings us back to cyclical dehumanization.
I would not be surprised if Vince was found guilty of everything and people like Henry were reported as going to visit him, to console him.
Evil? Perhaps. Trauma? Definitely.

The problem with people like him, Bully Ray and other "old school" wrestlers is that they excuse this because they went through shitty environments where being an asshole and trying to sabotage your peers was seen as a good thing. They had to go through people like Vince being volatile at work, constantly trying to please a guy that didn't know what he wanted while dealing with unnecessary nonsense as "paying dues" or "respecting the business" and see people who can't "keep up the pace" as people with a skill issue. They dealt with Vince's bullshit for years so they might see people who aren't eager to take the abuse with resentment. They might see it as "I took the punishment and I dealt with it, why can't you?" or stuff like that. |
