The Rock vs Erick Rowan at WrestleMania is considered a real match...

Because JYD no showed, Great Muta's opponent at WrestleWar was Doug Gilbert of all people.
Was there no one else available? They couldn't use Ranger Ross instead?

It obviously served a storyline purpose, but former and soon-to-be-again WWF champion Bret Hart dropping down a level to team with Owen against the Quebecers, the champions of an extremely weak 1994 tag division, felt strange as hell to me at the time. And that was a year and a half before Quebecer Pierre resurfaced as a pirate to steal Bret's coat. Bret is the king of this category. Shawn facing Kama at KOTR 1995 was another weird one, even as part of a tournament. And the fact that Shawn didn't win and advance was even weirder. To be fair, Ok Karma (At the time) was feuding with The Undertaker

Not a PPV, but Jon Moxley main evented the first Fyter Fest back in 2019 one-on-one against Joey Janela. It's actually pretty amazing how hard and how fast Janela's stock in the company fell after that show. Honestly, he did okay for himself for a while after that, like he had a really strong match with Kenny Omega around that time, too, since Kenny was feuding with Moxley, and trying to show he could do hardcore, too. Things did definitely fall apart later, though, not helped by Janela's knack for ending up in online arguments. That Omega vs Janela match on the first or second episode of Dark was the best match I've ever seen Janela have.

I am inclined to agree, and I say that as someone who liked a decent chunk of his AEW stuff. He had another great match with Omega, too, but that one in particular was fantastic. I forget which of the two had him falling into the ropes after a V-Trigger and it looking like he died on his feet, the sell was so good.

Would Brutus Beefcake (I’m sorry, The Butcher) getting a shot at the WCW World Heavyweight Championship against Hogan at Starrcade count? I dunno. I mean, dude was #2 or 3 babyface in the WWF until about 1990 and had a high profile match in 1993 at Mania.

He was just "Brother Bruti" and didn't dress or act like Beefcake. Had this been the WWF say 1991 and you had Brutus turn on Hogan and perhaps do it in such a way it changes the audience viewpoint of him, then perhaps it could have made it on a Saturday Night's Main Event or PPV but in the context of WCW and newly arrived champion Hulk Hogan, having Brutus, who hadn't been an active Singles wrestler since the Summer of 1990 turn on him and become a Main Event Heel was a leap. Prior to Starrcade 1994, Wrestlemania VI in 1990 was Brutus' last Singles match on Pay-Per-View. That's almost 5 years.

As a kid in 1994, even though The Butcher had turned on Hogan was acting like a jerk, I was still worried that Hulk was going to smash his new face into a thousand pieces due to the way he was booked at the end in WWF. Also I felt bad for Sting. He jumped into the fray to help Hogan and Hulk d's up porcelain faced Beefcake and Sting gets left with Avalanche. What a raw deal.

I got two, and they happened early that same year.
JBL vs. The Boogeyman at Royal Rumble 2006
Booker T and Sharmell vs. The Boogeyman at Wrestlemania 22.
Not to mention that Bradshaw and Booker jobbed to Boogeyman.

Which makes the fact that JBL and Booker T both separately challenged for the World Heavyweight Championship (Or should that just be World Championship?) not too long after even weirder.

The UK only ppvs gave us some classics but my favourite is still Kane Vs Mideon for the promo line "tonight, Kane, Mideon is going to give you the beating of your life!"
Mideon FFS. We laughed so hard.
Spoiler, he did not in fact give Kane that beating...

I would like to say Demolition v. Tenryu/Kitao at VIII. They were random but sadly Demolition, without Ax, were not major stars anymore.

It only lasted a few seconds, but always found it amusing that Kane wrestled Chavo in a singles match that was actually for a title at Wrestlemania. A world title, even. (Granted, not exactly like WWE was doing its damnedest to present it on parity with the others, but it was still a world title, as evidenced by the Cyber Sunday 2006 main event.) I think they had firmly established as not being one anymore because that was the year Chavo entered the Royal Rumble while still the ECW champion

Jay Leno and DDP v. Hogan and Bischoff. Jay Leno. Main events a PPV against Hulk Hogan. Friggin hogan hogging up the main event while goldberg is stuck in the middle of the card. Just nasty business

Didn't Tanahashi get lumped with a random match with Billy Gunn at one point?
