Chris Benoit vs Mike Enos at Souled Out 1999. Did Enos save Bischoff's life at one point. He was around for quite a while

Batista vs. Umaga at Wrestlemania XXIV comes to mind. All in the name of "brand supremacy."

It only lasted a few seconds, but always found it amusing that Kane wrestled Chavo in a singles match that was actually for a title at Wrestlemania.

Sting faced some very odd opponents in the mid-90s, even after being a multiple time World Champion. Nailz (as The Prisoner) is probably the most WTF-ish of the lot. Personally I still find Sting's two minute match against a broken down Iron Sheik at WrestleWar '89 to probably be the most random PPV match of his career.

(Granted, not exactly like WWE was doing its damnedest to present it on parity with the others, but it was still a world title, as evidenced by the Cyber Sunday 2006 main event.)

Chris Benoit vs Mike Enos at Souled Out 1999. Did Enos save Bischoff's life at one point. He was around for quite a while Bischoff seemed to have a soft spot for guys from the dying days of the AWA like John Nord, the Grappler and Larry Z so I wouldn't be surprised if that got him his run.

It obviously served a storyline purpose, but former and soon-to-be-again WWF champion Bret Hart dropping down a level to team with Owen against the Quebecers, the champions of an extremely weak 1994 tag division, felt strange as hell to me at the time. And that was a year and a half before Quebecer Pierre resurfaced as a pirate to steal Bret's coat.
Bret is the king of this category.
Shawn facing Kama at KOTR 1995 was another weird one, even as part of a tournament. And the fact that Shawn didn't win and advance was even weirder.

Undertaker vs. Luther Reigns is probably up there. Luther also has Eddie Guerrero. Luther needs one more random PPV match, but this time, against his brother Roman for the Head of the Table

Cody Rhodes vs. Shawn Spears on AEW's second ppv is going to be a "Did you know?" in 5 years Not a PPV, but Jon Moxley main evented the first Fyter Fest back in 2019 one-on-one against Joey Janela. It's actually pretty amazing how hard and how fast Janela's stock in the company fell after that show.

John Cena vs. Jesus sure was a PPV match even before you make the obvious jokes. And, the feud surrounding it was nuts! Jesus was Carlito's bodyguard. Carlito had beaten Cena for the U.S. Title in his first match on SmackDown! And then, Cena is written out to go film The Marine by a kayfabe stabbbing that was later revealed to be done by Jesus resumedly on Carlito's orders. What makes this even crazier is that Carlito is the son of Carlos Colon, and if you know wrestling history, then you know that the Most Famous Stabbing In Wrestling History happened in Carlos's WWC territory. WWE booked a stabbing angle with the son of a man famously associated with a stabbing!

It's actually pretty amazing how hard and how fast Janela's stock in the company fell after that show. Honestly, he did okay for himself for a while after that, like he had a really strong match with Kenny Omega around that time, too, since Kenny was feuding with Moxley, and trying to show he could do hardcore, too. Things did definitely fall apart later, though, not helped by Janela's knack for ending up in online arguments.
