It was. The fire happened in 2004, and sadly Bam Bam was gone by early 2007. I'm pretty sure the fire was in 2000, he was gone for a few months after it, and he came back with the generic outfit in late fall 2000. Bam Bam had already phased out the flames outfit by the time he was in the Jersey Triad in 1999.

Bret kind of gave up on his more elaborate attire after having a bunch stolen from the locker room and realising WCW is too much of a poop show to bother with making the effort.

My eyesight on the Wiki article read the 2004 underneath the paragraph talking about it. I just pulled up his match with The Demon in from Thunder that February and he is actually wearing a black sleveless shirt and generic dark pants. No flames in sight and thats months before. I also have his May 1999 match with DDP on and he's still wearing it there. Not sure when he stopped exactly.

Bam Bam was wearing silver flames before he did away with them completely, so there was a gradual phasing out of his colorful signature look. It's weird how dark and drab everything looked in the late 90's.

Those last several weeks of the Dudleyz run from 2016 had D-Von not even bothering to cut his sleeves from the t-shirt, sometimes not even tucking in his shirt. I remember feeling at the time that maybe he was about done, and sure enough they came up to being back on the roster for a full contractual year, and that was it for the Dudleyz.

Mick Foley, I believe, is the answer to this. Sweatpants, sneakers and whatever t-shirt under a flannel. Foley is almost the inverse. The more successful and iconic he got, the less he invested in his gear. He gradually shaped his image to support his notorious penny-pinching. That's saying a lot considering it looked like his WCW ring gear came straight from my grandma's closet.

Surprised no one has mentioned Davey Boy Smith wrestling in his jeans in the back half of his 1999 run.

Barry Windham wrestling in a wwf shirt in late 96 is up there One of the great progressions of watching a guy stop giving shit. Started out painting his whole face. Then got to “I’m not washing the paint out of my mustache any more”. Then by Survivor Series, no paint at all and the most generic WWF shirt they sold.

Toward the end of his first WWE run Punk very visibly stopped giving a shit between the mutton chops, the generic hoodies, and the frequent pure black kickpads.

Barry Windham wrestling in a wwf shirt in late 96 is up there The funny thing about mentioning Windham in a thread about "no effort on the way out" is that he wasn't actually out of the WWF again until mid-1998.

The fact that Marc Mero put the kibosh on his first feud and put that gimmick in the first step towards derailment didn’t help.

Surprised no one has mentioned Davey Boy Smith wrestling in his jeans in the back half of his 1999 run. Lucas (remember him?) had a daily video on wwe.com in which he answered fans questions and when one fan asked why Dave’s was wrestling in jeans and not his traditional attire, he said that it was 1999 and implied that times change.

Sarah Logan/Valhalla in Walmart hunting gear at the end of her first run with WWE: Tucker in suspenders post-Heavy Machinery: Can’t you blame Tucker? They turned him heel and had them break Heavy Machinery for no reason and had one of the worst heel runs ever by barely being visable and getting released.
