The way I look at these threads are: just because people discuss ratings, it shouldn't take away your enjoyment of the show. If it does don't come into these threads you're doing yourself no favors. People have been discussing ratings since the MNW and it probably won't stop until everyone is streaming platform exclusive. And then the discussion will be “How inflated would the numbers streaming platforms give?” That'll be a you problem to deal with hahha.

Genuine question: Why do people care about ratings? They are clearly depreciated in the modern day, with many, many people watching the shows on formats other than live TV. Ratings have always been flawed, and was just the bodge job to give network execs and advertisers some information about which shows were doing well, rather than nothing at all.

I would just like to say that I feel “discourse” is the most irritating phrase this board has seen since the “Basketball Jones” days.

Ratings have always been flawed, and was just the bodge job to give network execs and advertisers some information about which shows were doing well, rather than nothing at all. Like, I get the logic of it as a thing to talk about, debating what works and what doesn’t but it’s such a weird contrived system where we only know a small piece of what the networks and advertisers know. Dynamite is perceived to have bad ratings because it’s not hitting a million weekly yet WBD loves them and got two more shows from it, Raw has dropped from being a 5m a week show to a 1.6m a week show in the space of a decade but USA kept having them as a flag ship because the demos were strong enough to keep them afloat and Netflix is paying around a billion for the show in America. Smackdown was leading Friday nights for Fox and only losing to Tom Selleck and his Amazing Friends but that just got axed because it wasn’t producing enough advertiser money. It’s not to say they aren’t important and you can say some stuff about retaining viewership compared to cord cutting or whatever may be but the fact Nielson’s going through changes to count streaming numbers so we get a better idea of them instead of Netflix saying a show is watched by 80 squillion people and axing it anyway says that it’s a system that’s flawed and only gives a portion of the broader story. With the WWE example, yes, Raw is only doing 1.6 - 1.7m a week but their house shows and overall ticket sales have improved. They have licensing deals out of the wazoo and there’s zero reason to think Peacock is going to let its contract lapse with WWE without a fight for example. There’s much more to look at than just a weekly number that has a lot of factors going into it and might only be a blimp on the wider picture.

These ratings threads are always just the same two or three people going “nuh uh!” “yeah huh!” for multiple pages. Which is basically the AEW board in a nutshell.
They’ve definitely cooled down a bit but not even close to the point where they need to hit the panic button. It’s an entertaining, successful alternative to WWE. No reason to see it as anything more or less.

This is at SEVEN PAGES already?! Did the same 2-4 people (half of which probably don't watch the product) go in the same circles? I'm guessing yes.

I love to dissect ratings and talk business metrics (one of the main reasons I’m an Observer subscriber) and do watch the product, so I hate the idea that if people are talking negatively about ratings trends here that they’re doing so in bad faith.

Imagine if Cody as a grandson of a plummer would still be there. Ratings would have plummeted.

I've seen at least two people here I'd say are posting in bad faith, though I don't think you're one of them.

I've got a really, really fun fact that absolutely is going to make your life so much worse: Zack Snyder admitted that when Netflix does give viewership numbers of any kind, they always count any screen as two different viewers. Get ready.
