Last time I really liked Jerry Lawler on commentary was when Santino stole his delicious Subway sandwich. Great times.

Did we ever get an update on how his recovery post-stroke was going? Last I heard it wasn't going as smoothly as they hoped and he was still having issues speaking.

He seemed alright when he did his NXT appearance a few months ago. But then there's a big difference between doing one spot to put over a chosen NXT rookie over hours of commentary on a weekly basis.

Technically, Jerry was employed for life...and beyond.

As for WWF/E "lifers", there were plenty of ones who were supposed to be that who ended up getting fired/released, Vickie and Chavo Guerrero come to mind, they seemed to have a job for life but we all know that didnt happen.

Vickie and Chavo both decided to leave. Vickie got a job outside of wrestling, and Chavo asked for his release.

Was only ever any good with JR acting as his Monsoon - a straight man disgusted by his dirty old man antics. Was unlucky to get Cole when he was at his worst. Brilliant heel in the new generation era, one of a small handful to really get under my skin.
Feel more bad that he can’t wrestle anymore rather than commentate. He used to love going to little mudshow indies and doing the main event as he did it all the time and he probably didn’t need the money. He must miss that a lot. Hopefully he can still do signings and the like.

TK, When it comes to possibly bringing in Lawler even for a one-off to AEW, just listen to King Kai:

this pretty much guarantees we'll get at least a one off of JR and King in AEW at some point.
i'm not gonna be shedding any tears for king... like i'm super glad he survived that heart attack and made it out okay. the worst of the worst (save vince, he can have a thousand paper clips) I still feel uncomfortable wishing full harm on but this guy has been a piece of shit for foreveeeeeeer. i hope he is healthy, he diversified his bonds, whatever else but if they've got him on a legends contract that's more than enough. still doesn't feel great siding with a company over an employee but seriously, jerry has irritated the shit out of me for decades let me vent a little lmao.

Fair point on his commentary, I won't get into his accusations here, but I enjoyed him as a heel commentator in the attitude era cheering for Vince and hating Austin. Yes I hated the puppies stuff though I think a lot of his mid '90s commentary still holds up, especially the jokes about the Hart Family. Those crack me up still. Yeah 90's Lawler I really like, other than the puppies stuff. Should have said he started to suck by after 2000 rather than late 2000s in my original post

Wouldn't the Legends deal just be WWE's version of being "taken care of for life?" I know it's not the ideal but this reporting makes it sound like they declined to renew his contract and put him out on the curb. He's just not under a broadcast deal anymore, which is definitely for the best considering the health issues he's had. He shouldn't have to die on TV twice.

Lawler sucked so bad as a commentator from the mid to late 2000s that rewatching some of those matches annoys me. Just phoning it in. Mid to late 2000's? That's being INCREDIBLY generous in my opinion. I thought he went to shit late 98 into 99 when his whole gimmick just became "PUPPIES!!PUPPIES!!PUPPIES!!" which was a pretty bad look anyone but especially for someone credibly accused of statutory rape. I was so happy when Heyman replaced him in 2001, and just crushed when he came back that November. EDIT: Just gonna add this link deadspin.com/jerry-lawler-wrote-a-really-dumb-letter-to-prosecutors-1822790447
I've made jokes in this vein a bunch of times in the past, but I'll say it again: Jerry Lawler just turning his headset off and outright masturbating during every women's match might've been more tolerable than the whole "Puppies!" thing.

It's almost like people losing jobs, even longtime ones, wasn't a Vince invention and wasn't going away with TKO! Crazy, no?
Anyway it's not like he was a big part of the weekly shows anymore, at least not like he was back in the day.
People who ignore the Legends Deal part are making this to be bigger than it really is, IMO.
As for general commentary on his career, his high point to me was his heel work in the early-mid 90s. Yes cheap heat, yes cheap heat and comedy over actual wrestling, but it worked. I loved the Lawler/Bret interactions, mostly. The other Harts too.
When he discovered Puppies was when he jumped the shark, I agree about that.

He probably can't ever commentate again after the stroke but is still under legends contract. This is a non story.
Motivated Lawler was a great commentator. Lazy ass Lawler was awful. We got much more of the latter.
Still, remember that random women's rumble where they had Lawler commentating and of all people in wrestling he actually came prepared with stats on nxt competitors college sports stats and wrestling heroes!

[/div][/quote] I still feel funny that he pretty much wiped his hands of Brian's problems 5 years ago and what that led to. Least that's how some people made it sound. If it's true, could he have saved his life? I mean when I met him he seemed cool, not the best, most outgoing celebrity I met but it was pleasant enough.

I guess the bad news is, he won't be around here anymore.

Now you got me thinking, based on their active roster who would fit the mould the most for them calling an "attitude era" like match. Definitely Copeland vs. Christian or those two in a Ladder match, maybe with FTR.
