You can blame Puppies on Road Dogg, he made some comment about Debra's "puppies" before a match and Lawler immediately latched onto it.

Lawler sucked so bad as a commentator from the mid to late 2000s that rewatching some of those matches annoys me. Just phoning it in. Mid to late 2000's? That's being INCREDIBLY generous in my opinion. I thought he went to shit late 98 into 99 when his whole gimmick just became "PUPPIES!!PUPPIES!!PUPPIES!!" which was a pretty bad look anyone but especially for someone credibly accused of statutory rape. I was so happy when Heyman replaced him in 2001, and just crushed when he came back that November. EDIT: Just gonna add this link deadspin.com/jerry-lawler-wrote-a-really-dumb-letter-to-prosecutors-1822790447This. I made a thread a few years ago on this topic. officialfan.proboards.com/thread/605982/wrestlemania-7-classic-jerry-lawlerI personally felt if King was on commentary X-7 is not as fondly remembered, commentator wise than the Heyman and Ross duo. They were magic and made the Summer 2001 WWF TV so fun to watch, even if the product was crap with the invasion. They made it fun on commentary.

Yeah even if they didn’t have him on a legends deal this wouldn’t be a story anyway. Yes he was an important part of the attitude era as a commentator but I don’t think that entitles him to be given a job for life

this pretty much guarantees we'll get at least a one off of JR and King in AEW at some point.

Lawler's been with the company for 30 years. He shouldn't need to be "taken care of" for the rest of his life. I think that it was implied that he was a "Vince guy" as someone that Vince and not WWE proper, would take care with a paycheck.

Last time I really liked Jerry Lawler on commentary was when Santino stole his delicious Subway sandwich. Who can forget when he had that lame comeback against Bad News Barrett that actually popped?

Holy hell the wording in that original article, while technically facts, is also worded like it has an agenda.

Was only ever any good with JR acting as his Monsoon - a straight man disgusted by his dirty old man antics. Was unlucky to get Cole when he was at his worst. Brilliant heel in the new generation era, one of a small handful to really get under my skin. Feel more bad that he can’t wrestle anymore rather than commentate. He used to love going to little mudshow indies and doing the main event as he did it all the time and he probably didn’t need the money. He must miss that a lot. Hopefully he can still do signings and the like. and he then would do things like Wrestle Kevin Owens randomly on some random indy.

As for general commentary on his career, his high point to me was his heel work in the early-mid 90s. Yes cheap heat, yes cheap heat and comedy over actual wrestling, but it worked. I loved the Lawler/Bret interactions, mostly. The other Harts too. When he discovered Puppies was when he jumped the shark, I agree about that.
And it's still weird, because Lawler was still presented as the biggest babyface in the world in Memphis all the way up to the day the USWA died, even while he was breaking crutches over Bret's head on Monday Night Raw.

I don't remember the exact circumstances of how it happened, but Lawler did have a heel run in the USWA in 1996 at the time The Rock was working there as Flex Kavana. He was a babyface again by the time the USWA ended, though.

As far as I know the King has always managed his money well even before he ever went to the WWF/E. I would imagine that he cares less about this news than the dude that wrote that article.

Jerry Lawler was one of the best color commentators of all time. But he's been a shell of himself for a really long time.

Jerry Lawler was making great money from his early 20's onward and he is in his mid 70's now. If he never earned a penny besides Social Security checks for the rest of his life he will still die a rich man who's family will get a substanial inheritance.

Yeah, Lawler was apparently Mick Foleylike in his cheapness on the road and, as others mentioned, he's a teetotaler. He's been financially secure for years, Tennessee isn't exactly known for it's crazy high cost of living

Lawler may not have the party lifestyle as Flair but he does have three ex wives.

Fair point on his commentary, I won't get into his accusations here, but I enjoyed him as a heel commentator in the attitude era cheering for Vince and hating Austin. Yes I hated the puppies stuff though I think a lot of his mid '90s commentary still holds up, especially the jokes about the Hart Family. Those crack me up still. The Bret/Lawler feud was GOLD!
