Who knows if he's lying, but this is still a good time to remind everyone that every single person involved in Flair's last match sucks for allowing it to happen Maybe, but they probably agreed to it precisely because they knew that they could rein him in and keep him from dying. Like the episode of Quantum Leap with Terry Funk where Scott Bakula wouldn’t tag out because as soon as he tags in his partner was going to have a heart attack and die. lol Face it Flair was going to be in there with someone and if he was in a singles match with some nobody he’s going to do anything that he wants and probably die in there. How about like, anyone in his family, including his grifter son-in law Conrad, peers in the business, fans etc all universally agree to say "No, you crazy asshole, you're NOT wrestling again. You're in your 70s, have a pacemaker and have had brushes with death. Go enjoy time with your grandkids"

I’m just going to keep on pretending that his last match was with HBK except for a cameo in Sting’s retirement match.

Ric talking about 'putting the place over' at a restaurant he's eating at isn't the most embarrassing part of this but damn dude some people have their brains so cooked by the wrestling business that they have no idea how to exist outside of it

Hasn't he outright said in the past that he'd be happy to die in the ring? And in the build to that match people were pointing out there's a non-zero chance of that actually happening so this wouldn't be a huge shock. It could also just be a Hoganesque lie/exaggeration to get his name out there too of course.
The man has just been such a mess for so long now. I know that restaurant clip is the latest thing in the news but that comedy roast show he did a couple months ago was probably even more uncomfortable to watch. It crosses the line between sad and funny so many times and he eventually walks out halfway through the show when he realizes everyone was laughing at, not with him.

I will never ever forget Jay Lethal going to put Ric on the corner for a superplex, but then changing his mind and just doing a normal suplex after realizing "oh I'm going to be a murderer if I do this"

Is that Jarrett having to sell for a dirty old man? From the looks of him, I'm shocked he didn't have several heart attacks, 2 strokes, cirrhosis, 5 NDAs, and 3 restraining orders on his way to the ring.

For how much of his life he's spent drunk, it feels like he should be better at it.

For how much of his life he's spent drunk, it feels like he should be better at it. Take it from me (retired alcohol abuser, coming up on one year sober btw 🎉), when you drink that hard, that often.. all it does is turn you into a major asshole. Sure, we all know people that party a lot but by all accounts Ric is quite literally intoxicated all day long. I actually feel bad for him because there’s usually tons of underlying trauma that causes someone to want to be that level of wasted all the time. Fleeting fame, financial problems, his son passing, no longer able to do the one thing he really loved/was good at. It’s gotta be tough. That being said, he’s a 70 year old man and if he doesn’t get it now.. it’s unlikely he ever will. With all of his other health problems I’m surprised there haven’t been some alcohol related issues as well (liver/kidney stuff). I don’t get any joy out of saying this. I’ll always be a fan of his in ring stuff, but it’s sad to see someone who’s entertained me so much go down this road. What’s even more unfortunate is that he’s pushed away all the real friends in his life who could’ve kicked him in the ass to straighten up, and now I imagine he’s just surrounded by an entourage of people who are using his friendship for clout or other personal gain.

This is the most rational take on Flair on the Internet. The man has desperately needed help for at least 25 years but sadly seems content to keep going farther and farther down the same road. Also, congratulations on coming up on one year!

Not counting wrestlers who literally murdered people, has anyone in the industry managed to piss away their status to the degree Ric Flair has in the last 15 years? It's just an endless chain of "Oh, God, now what?"

It's just an endless chain of "Oh, God, now what?" Hogan pushes him close, but even he has had the sense and/or humility to at least make token apologies for his misdeeds. Flair hasn't even managed that. A case can be made for Vince, too.

It's just an endless chain of "Oh, God, now what?" Yeah Hogan is worse. Flair arguably has worse accusations given that Hogan's private opinions leaked versus Flair having exposed himself to women on a plane. But Flair still gets booked and got signed to AEW. So no, Hogan did worse damage to his legacy

I finally watched the match for the first time, having previously just seen a few clips.
First off, Flair can barely walk on his way to the ring, the the match starts and Flair's offense is just so damn slow. The fact that Jarrett and Lethal have to sell for it is embarrassing. It wouldn't have been as bad if the match was presented more as an exhibition, 'let's keep it clean and fun for his retirement', but the run up literally became a blood feud.
So the kayfabe elements are completely shot from square one. Then just a few minutes in it's clear that Flair is having issues. He was in bad shape before that suplex - which they were obviously going to attempt from the second rope at first - but after that he is just gone.
When the match is over, close ups of Flair show a real distant glazed over look in his eyes. It's quite scary.
Did he have a heart attack? I don't know, it's possible.. but clearly something had gone very wrong.

Then talked to the ref that counted the pin.Pondwater Dave Miller. "Flair is gonna do what Flair wants to do." and he is right. Dave got to count the pin on his childhood hero. And got a good pay day out of it. I rather Flair had not done the match. But free will and he is a grown man if he chooses to endanger his life that is on him.
