Star Wars Episode 1 turned 25 yesterday.
How do you feel about the movie after all this time? Was Jar Jar really that bad?

25 years later and the thing'that's aged best about episode 1 is The Saga Begins:

I'm going to look at the positives:
John Williams' score is fantastic. The Pod Race scene is cool. Darth Maul is a pretty great villain. It's a great way to introduce young kids to Star Wars.

Hayden Christensen gets criticized for his acting in the prequels, but Laurence f***ing Olivier couldn't make "I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere." work as a line.
Some of the dialogue in the prequels makes me wonder if Lucas has ever actually had a conversation with another human being.

For me, the postives are the score, Maul, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. Plus it generally looks pretty good, since Lucas hadn't totally gone CGI crazy at that point. The pod race was fun the first time but just goes on forever.

Never actually saw the movie, but I definitely remember the hype for it. I remember one of my friends being particularly obsessed with it at the time.

And the George Lucas/Vince McMahon similarities list continues to this day.

I would definitely agree with your positives. Ewan McGregor was such inspired casting and a perfect Obi Wan. He was, for me, one of two consistently good things about the prequels (the other being John Williams' scores).

Starting with Phantom Menace is bad parenting. Release order or bust And if they’re too young to handle that, wait

I was never a big Star Wars guy so it didn’t bother me as much as it did my friends. Was a terrible movie though. It just couldn’t ruin my childhood because I only cared to a certain level to begin with.
ill say this for it though…I respect it a hell of a lot more now than I did then. Say what you want about it…and it is trash…but it is the realized vision of its creator through and through. No one gave Lucas notes on this bullshit. It’s as it is intended.
compare that to Rise of Skywalker and Solo…two movies that appear to have been designed in a board room by people who have never seen Star Wars. Solo is what happens when suits fill two whiteboards with information…one that lists everything they know about Han Solo…the other with a “there are no bad ideas” approach to elevator pitching a plot…and then the head exec walks in and says “put it all in”. Rise is what happens when you are so afraid of angering the loudest fans you write lazy fan fiction because you just don’t care.
The prequels, for better or…let’s be honest…worse, are what George Lucas wanted them to be. And the anger about them may be “they’re bad” on the surface…but in reality it’s because it was a glass shattering moment where you learned that the creator doesn’t understand what you liked about the thing he created. Or at least doesn’t agree with it.
could be worse. You should have seen my face when Ridley Scott was going to make another movie in the Alien franchise and it was Prometheus. It’s like when you find out your parents aren’t all knowing people and they’re just as dumb as you and everyone else.

The movie sucked then and sucks now. I hate when people defend it as "it's the Star Wars made for kids." Yeah? Do kids love movies about land trade disputes?

He said he used internet rumors to help with the lyrics. Thank goodness he didnt write a song based off of Multiverse of Madness in that case.

It’s not a good movie. But when I look back, now, I think about how excited my friends and I were to buy tickets to a new Star Wars movie. The original trilogy were all released before we were born. And it was cool getting a taste of what that hype must’ve been like. Walking out of the theater, none of us had the heart to say we didn’t like it. It was more about the experience.

It was more about the experience. what I remember most was people camping outside the theater.... my brother and his best friend went to the theater and cut hte line because his friend's brother worked at the theater >_> I actually remember him coming home and actually stating that it wasn't good. which was the first time I heard someone say anything bad about it until like 3 months later...
