July 1st 1999 is when I finally saw this movie. My 13th birthday, Dad decided to take me to the Star Wars movie I wouldn’t shut up about. He fell asleep in the theatre, I honestly didn’t do much better. This movie is not particularly fun.

I liked the movie well enough, my main issue with it is Darth Maul. Who seemed more like a Bond villain's main henchman then a main antagonist. It's funny because movie Maul, and Clone Wars Maul seem like 2 completely different characters.

Limited to 15 prints. ![](https://scontent-iad3-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.15752-9/436596671_821212920075276_796477035805584954_n.jpg?_nc_cat=109&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=5f2048&_nc_ohc=lZPHL4eiGYYQ7kNvgEpO87x&_nc_ht=scontent-iad3-2.xx&oh=03_Q7cD1QHyQIis3imB89pHs_g0LegY6J9JpAQfWzR9KiaVsURFoA&oe=6675DBF3)

As an 8-year old who never saw the originals I still knew it was a cultural event. I vividly remember the hype and all the tie-in chips, sodas, toys, etc. My uncle took the cousins and I to see it at a Cinépolis in Tijuana while we were at the mall. Even on the 3rd or 4th weekend it was still jam-packed. I thought it looked nerdy/corny but gave it a chance since my older cousin was excited.
Was utterly bored until the pod-race scene, which was legitimately thrilling on the big screen. By far the best moment was the lightsaber duel. Not understanding anything about the story didn't stop the audience from being engrossed by the action or when Qui-Gon died. Some sequences work on their own and that's one of the finest in the series IMO. I walked out feeling baffled but thinking Darth Maul was one of the coolest characters I'd ever seen - enough so to rent the PS1 game hoping to learn more about him or see if he was playable.
In spite of the millions of words dissecting what went wrong, I think there's a perfectly fine movie in there. But it had no business being more than 100 minutes.

I liked the movie, but keep in mind I was 7 years old at the time.
I also had no idea Jar Jar was so hated until I was older.

I enjoyed it as a kid. Was a total surprise to get the internet years later and find that people who were grown ups at the time were so angry about it. Similar to the Invasion in that regard.

I remember REALLY wanting to like it. It literally took me years to realize it was not a great film.

I was a 9 year-old boy when this came out, was hyped about it, got all the toys my mum would buy me and even had a Darth Maul head Celebrations box. (we would use that as a Piggy Bank for years, would do the same for The Darth Vader head when Revenge of The Sith came out)
...And I was bored to tears when I actually watched it. Too much talky shit between the action, Jar Jar was made to appeal to kids like me and even I thought he was an annoying shit and Anakin, the kid who would grow up to Darth Vader, was a dorkus.
Granted the Lightsaber fights were cool but one good thing in a movie does not make a bad movie good.
Nowadays I don't think it's that bad, but just not a great film.
Attack of the Clones is worse though. Doing a rewatch of the main Star Wars movies and am currently struggling through that one right now. Jeezus Gerorge, is that how you imagined Anakin Skywalker to talk? I've seen Hayden Christianson in other things, he's competent enough.

Movie almost feels inconsequential like you could tweak a few lines in Episode 2 and this movie wouldn't even be needed. Yeah I've often thought it could have been condensed into a 15 minute prologue and then we get going with the real ep1. Although of course that would be very a very un-star wars thing to do. The shadow poster was really good, just thought I'd mention that.
