Yep, I decided to get another collection for my physical media collection. The big thing is The Breakfast Club has to be my favorite movie I never had a physical copy of. Like ever. This collection double dips with some other sets I have, but figured it was worth it since I also didn’t have a copy of Fast Times at Ridgemont High or Weird Science handy. I could have got a smaller set with just those 3, but figured I’d revisit The ‘Burbs, The Great Outdoors, and the Secret to My Success at some point. I double dipped on Fletch, Uncle Buck, and The Wizard, but at least if I’m in a 1980’s mood I can now find them all easily in my not always most organized apartment. Plus, to this day I don’t know if I’ve ever watched Dragnet all the way through so that’s a bonus.

The Breakfast Club - not as good as Sixteen Candles, but one of the better teen movies of the 80's
Fast Times at Ridgemont High - try listening to Moving In Stereo and not picturing Phoebe Cates, the quintessential teen movie until Sixteen Candles, Oingo Boingo has a great track here that they never released on any of their albums
Weird Science - speaking of Oingo Boingo, they provide the title track here...and silly premise aside, a charming little movie
Fletch - there was a time when Chevy Chase would put out hit after hit, and while it isn't his best movie, it's one of his funnier ones
The Burbs - underrated gem about middle America gossip, great ensemble
Uncle Buck - one of the most misleading movie posters of all time, pretty disappointing overall other than the chemistry between Culkin and Candy
The Great Outdoors - humor falls flat for me other than the ending with the bear
The Wizard - stupid promotional movie for a classic game
Dragnet - forgettable movie about a relatively dated show
The Secret to My Success - movies like this prevented Fox from capitalizing more on his star power...humor falls very flat

From best to worst: The Breakfast Club The Great Outdoors Uncle Buck Fast Times at Ridgemont High Weird Science Fletch/The Secret to My Success/The Burbs/Dragnet The Wizard (I should mention that I've never seen Fletch/Secret To My Success/Burbs/Dragnet.) Honestly it’s probably been like 20 years since I’ve watched Fletch, The Secret to My Success and The Burbs. I remember enjoying them all to a degree, though the ending of The Burbs was pretty goofy. Definitely looking forward to revisiting them hence why I went with the 10 film set rather than the triple feature

10.The Wizard-Was always crap but if you saw it as a kid I can see loving it.
09-Dragnet-Start of Tom Hanks losing his comedic skills.
08-The Breakfast Club-Ok I am like the one Gen X person that isnt a mega fan of this movie it seems. Never saw it all until maybe 5 years ago. It's ok but some parts are not good. Like when Anthony Michael Hall is dancing and all the windows break.
07-Secret of my Success-It's ok but lesser MJF.
06-Uncle Buck-Another I never saw until a few years ago. And another if I had seen it as a kid I would love it.
05-Fletch-One of the last funny things Chevy did.
04-Weird Science-More than likely my favorite Hughs film.
03-The Great Outdoors-One I can put on at any time and love.
02-The Burbs-The last funny film from Tom Hanks.
01-Fast times-Seen this so many times and perfect background noise for me.

I dislike them all equally, so does that make them all joint first, or joint last?

Haha surprised to see The Wizard getting so little love, but at least there’s caveats as to why. And I get it. It’s not like The Wizard is going to be the first movie I pop in from this set. The nostalgia love some folks have for it is next level though. And I get that too. I remember before it was available as a region 1 DVD, someone I went to college with bought a region free player just to watch that since it was available for some other region. Also, the Shout! Select Blu-ray looks pretty cool: Although it probably isn’t selling too well since it’s on sale on Amazon for under $15. It’s Shout! so I’m not too surprised. Other labels like Criterion, Arrow, etc put them to shame. Sometimes Shout! just puts out a new transfer, the movie trailer, overcharges for it, and calls it a day.

I rewatched The Breakfast Club yesterday. In high school I was closest to Brian (Anthony Michael Hall’s character) though I hung out more with the Bender (Judd Nelson) types. These days I guess I’d be closest to Carl (the janitor). That sounds bleak, but really none of the adult characters are particularly flattering and I can’t say I relate to the parents because I’m not one.
Oh well. One can only aspire to be Claire’s dad facetiously. He’s just rich enough to be trapped in a loveless marriage with a spoiled daughter who talks shit behind his back. Being Richard Vernon wouldn’t be the worst thing, but I don’t drink swamp water coffee and I use time I’m stuck somewhere more efficiently. Like by writing about 40 year-old movies.

The Burbs is amazing. 80s at it's finest. They just don't make them like that anymore. And it has Princess Leia and Donatello in it.

Okay, I watched The Great Outdoors today and something bugged me. John Candy and Dan Aykroyd are brother-in-laws in the movie, but how exactly? Is Aykroyd supposed to be married to Candy’s sister or is Candy supposed to be married to Aykroyd’s sister. Since the four and their spouses are all heavily featured it’s weird that they are brother-in-laws, but neither spouse comes off as being the sister of Candy or Aykroyd. Ultimo Gallos since you have seen it a bunch, do you have any idea? Maybe they mentioned it and I just didn’t register it.

I think Candy's wife was Dan's sister. but i need to rewatch it. Yeah, I figured a quick Google search would clear things up, but nothing pops up aside from saying they are brother-in-laws.
