100. 1942 1942 is set in the Asian theater of World War II. Despite the game being created by a Japanese company and staff, the goal is to reach Tokyo and destroy the entire Japanese air fleet. The player pilots a plane (dubbed the "Super Ace", although it is actually a Lockheed P-38 Lightning), and has to shoot down enemy planes. Besides shooting, the player can also perform a "loop-the-loop" to avoid enemy fire. Destroying a formation of red enemy planes will result in a power-up, there are different types as follows: Two Machine Guns Destroy all planes in the screen Two Side Planes Bonus Points Extra Loops (Rare) One extra P-38 There are 32 levels, the ending of each finishes with the plane landing upon an aircraft carrier, receiving a debriefing and a briefing for the next mission. Players have to travel through Midway, Marshall, Attu, Rabaul, Leyte, Saipan, Iwo Jima, and finally Okinawa before reaching the ultimate goal, Tokyo. On the Famicom (NES) version, all enemies still displayed when it lands on the carrier will explode and earn the player points. This is not so in the Arcade version, which makes it very hard to attain 100% rating on level completion. Furthermore, be aware of stages that have the dreaded Japanese Mother Bomber Ayako (based on an actual Japanese bomber, see Nakajima G8N) blocking your way towards the end of the stage. You cannot clear the stage unless you shoot down the Ayako in selected stages. Each level increases the difficulty and planes become more aggressive as you move throughout the 32 levels.

A Boy And His Blob: Trouble On Blobolonia A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia is a side-scrolling platformer in which the character and his friend Blob (full name Blobert) travel together on earth and on Blobert's home planet Blobolonia in a quest to defeat the evil emperor. An interesting note about A Boy and His Blob, is that the boxart depicts the main character as a young teen, and the way the Blob appears (not only the color white, but appears to have a clumpy and thick consistency) has caused many in the gaming community to debate whether the graphic designer was purposefully hinting at male puberty. Blobert can change into several different items when he is fed jelly beans. A licorice jelly bean, for instance, will change Blobert into a ladder, while a honey jelly bean will turn him into a hummingbird. Most of these transformations can be remembered mnemonically due to a correlation between the flavor of the jelly bean and the item that results. The list is as follows: * Licorice - Ladder - Climbs to higher places. The flavor and relating item both start with the same letter. May also be because licorice is long and thin. * Coconut - Coconut - The screen follows the rolling coconut. * Cola - Bubble - Allows safe underwater exploration. Bubbles are in cola drinks. * Cinnamon - Blowtorch - Burns webs. Cinnamon is spicy and blowtorches are "hot." * Apple - Jack - Lifts up objects. This refers to a drink made from cider called applejack, and to the popular cereal "Apple Jacks". * Vanilla - Umbrella - Protects the boy from falling objects and from heights. the illa and ella parts of each word almost rhyme (and will rhyme when pronounced with a rough southern accent) * Tangerine - Trampoline - Jumps to high places. "Tangerine" sounds similar to "trampoline." * Root Beer - Rocket - Allows travel to and from Blobolonia. Root beer, when shaken, can create a large explosion of soda, much like a rocket. * Honey - Hummingbird - Allows Blobert to follow more easily. Hummingbirds eat nectar/honey. * Punch - Hole - Punches a hole to new areas. This is a pun on "punch." * Lime - Key - Unlock doors. Key lime is a smaller type of lime. * Orange - Vitablaster! - Shoots vitamins at enemies. Oranges can be an excellent source of vitamins. * Ketchup - Nothing - Blobert dislikes ketchup-flavored jelly beans, so will not normally eat them; instead, where the ketchup jellybean is thrown, Blobert will appear, even if he was many screens away. "Ketchup" sounds like "catch up." It is possible to trick Blobert into eating a ketchup-flavored jelly bean by throwing him a honey jelly bean first and then quickly throwing the ketchup one. Doing so will cause Blobert to transform into a brick wall which serves no purpose. The boy must make use of all of these jelly beans, collect diamonds and treasure, and defeat the final boss on Blobonia, the emperor, by using vitamins. The emperor has a sweet tooth to the extent that vitamins are fatal.

97. Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode High above New York City a helicopter explodes. Aboard the craft is the latest biological warfare weapon which has been secretly developed by the CIA (Central Intelligence Agency)... Cassandra-G. A vaccine and plans have been stolen are among the fragments of the helicopter wreckage along with a shell fired from an M16. The copter was shot down from fire of an expert sharpshooter armed with an M-16. The CIA concludes that the act was the responsibility of the super sniper, Golgo-13. An official release by the CIA links Golgo-13 to the KGB (the Soviet intelligence group). Under these circumstances, The CIA copter incident and the unknown where-abouts of Cassandra-G become entangled. A representative of the secret international organization, FIXER, transmits a message. FIXER believes the affair is the work of the remnants of the DREK Empire and not Golgo-13. After the dispatch, the representative disappears. The situation becomes more and more mysterious. A man who calls himself Condor agrees to help FIXER. In East Berlin, because Condor has received some information on Cassandra-G, the CIA, KGB, and even DREK are threatening his life Upon a request from FIXER, Golgo-13 has gone into action. He is to get information on a vaccine from Condor and eliminate the leader of the DREK group... What is lesser known about the US release of the game is that DREK "empire" is actually the resurrected Nazi regime - Nintendo removed all Nazi references. The final boss, Smirk, is supposed to be a cyborg version of Adolf Hitler. The removal of all Nazi/Hitler references can be likened to NES game Top Secret: Hitler no Fukkatsu (Bionic Commando in the US). Although Nintendo of U.S.A. attempted to remove all Nazi references, some escaped censor. For example, a file retrieved by Togo during a base infiltration in Greece retains a swastika on it, which is visible in the player's inventory area. Interestingly, "drek" is also a Yiddish word meaning "shit" or "crap", and it is possible this is where the name came from.

96. Karnov Karnov must travel through 9 different levels. He must walk, jump and shoot his way through these levels and find special items that will help him on his way. He can collect red orbs in which he can upgrade up to 3 fireballs at a time. Each level contains a variety of strange enemies, such as gargoyles, rock creatures, and strong men, which Karnov must destroy or avoid. When he reaches the end of a level he usually has to face one or more powerful enemies which he must defeat to beat the level and receive a new piece of a treasure map. At the end of the game he must face a powerful boss often called "The Wizard" and collect the treasure.

95. Goonies The Goonies for the famicom (and Playchoice 10) is like a much simpler version of the NES version, Goonies II. Once again you play as Mikey and have to rescue 6 goonie friends from their captivity. To progress a level, Mikey must collect 3 separate keys and 1 goonie from within skull doors by dropping bombs. However if you stand too close to a bomb, its blast will take you out. A health meter will slowly drop with attacks from enemies. The main form of attack is kicking. Bombs and a slingshot (50 shots) also are used as weapons. Along the way other items can be found like diamonds (collecting 8 replenishes the life bar of Mikey), red and white potions to gain life, and a white cross that grants limited invincibility. Unlike the obscure Goonies II plot, The Goonies follows the movie much more closely - showing references to notable scenes such as the boiling pipes, falling rock booby traps, a pirate ship, and even One-eyed Willy. Yep, Willy appears on screen every once and a while to travel across your path in hopes of giving Chester Copperpot a companion.

94. Blaster Master The plot of Metafight is centered around Kane Gardner, pilot of the battle tank, "Metal Attacker", who lands on the planet Sophia the 3rd to lead the attack against the invading emperor Goez. In Blaster Master (the localized version of Metafight), the player controls Jason Frudnick, a teenage boy who fell into a humongous underground cavern after chasing his pet frog, Fred, who has become enlarged, due to exposure to radiation. There, he discovers an all-terrain battle tank. This vehicle is designated SOPHIA (sometimes also referred to as Sofia), which stands for "Subatomic Omni-directional Probative Hyper-responsive Indomitable Abdicator (3rd Design) Nora MA-01". As he explores the underground world, he must find the underboss of each of the eight levels and destroy them. After he destroys each underboss, he is given an upgrade with which to enhance SOPHIA the 3rd. When he reaches the end, he discovers that the underbosses were controlled by the Plutonium Boss, a creature which was planning to invade the world above. The story of Blaster Master is sometimes criticized for being confusing and incomplete. For example, Fred's mutation is brought about after he hops onto a radioactive chest inexplicably placed in Jason's front yard and no explanation is given for either the radioactive chest, or SOPHIA's convenient location. The plot of the Blaster Master Worlds of Power book, which is slightly different from that of the manual, goes into more detail and explains many of these quirks. However, the Worlds of Power book was originally not canon to the storyline of Blaster Master. Jason begins the game in his tank, Sophia the 3rd, with a limited selection of abilities. It can move horizontally, jump, fire shots from its cannon, or use special attacks after finding ammunition for them. As the game progresses, however, Jason acquires new abilities for the tank by defeating the bosses of each level. Each upgrade affords a different style of gameplay. For example, it is possible to receive an upgrade for water movement ("Dive") which allows the vehicle to move freely through water environments; with the "Hover" upgrade module, Sophia the 3rd has the capability to fly through the air to reach higher targets and gain entry to remote platforms, and so on. In addition, Jason may leave the tank at any time to explore surrounding regions. His armor and attacks are weaker outside the tank, and falling long distances deals damage to the unfortified Jason. Nevertheless, exiting Sophia is the only way to climb ladders and enter various passageways throughout the level. When Jason enters one of these passageways, the game mode changes to an overhead shooter. Here, Jason can use either of two weapons: his gun, or grenades. Although the grenades deal more damage and are required to defeat some bosses, they are difficult to aim properly, as throwing a grenade a long distance requires a moving start. Jason's gun is fairly weak at first, but by picking up certain items, its shots become stronger and gain a greater range. Though some of these passages contain useful power-ups, only one per level leads to the boss's room.

93. Mega Man 6 In the year 20XX, the first annual "Robot Masters Tournament" is held. The tournament was designed to test the designing capabilities of the world's greatest engineers. Thus, engineers and programmers (and of course, spectators) from the world over gathered to participate in this event. The tournament was hosted by a man known only as "Mr. X," who was one of the world's richest men and supposedly one of its greatest engineers. Dr. Light, a pacifist, decided not to enter the tournament, but he took charge and did send Mega Man to go along and make sure that everything was safe for all the spectators and to discipline the Robot Masters. Many strong robots participated, and in the end, eight robots were victorious. However, at the close of the tournament, Mr. X came to the podium and announced that he had reprogrammed the eight robots to do his bidding and that he had been manipulating the contestants all along. Furthermore, he was going to use his newly created army of robots, under command of the new Robot Masters to take over the world. Mega Man was immediately ordered by Dr. Light to put an end to the madness. Dr. Light has upgraded Rush to be able to combine with Mega Man to form various adapters, such as "Jet Mega Man", who can fly/hover for a brief period of time, but can't use charge shots, and "Power Mega Man", who can punch huge blocks to destroy them, but has limited attack range. Mega Man fought and defeated the tough Robot Masters, who were spread out all throughout the world, and then made his way to Mr. X's fortress. After battling his way through, he finally confronted the madman and defeated him. Mr. X removed his mask and revealed that he was none other than Dr. Wily. Wily had been posing as the multi-billionaire for an indeterminate amount of time, so it's safe to say that "Mr. X" either did not or no longer exists. Wily fled to an all-new Skull Castle and Mega Man gave chase, fought his way through it, and defeated Dr. Wily in a final showdown. After the years of fighting, Dr. Wily was finally brought to justice and placed in prison with the proper authorities. As Wily can only quote, "rule over a prison cell," the world is finally at peace...for now. The following Robot Masters appear in this game. * Blizzard Man * Centaur Man * Flame Man * Knight Man * Plant Man * Tomahawk Man * Wind Man * Yamato Man The Rush Power adaptor also deals good damage against the robot masters, especially useful with Knight Man since it can hit him through his shield. As with Mega Man 5, the same musical theme for the fortress stages was used for four consecutive levels, as opposed to using a theme for two levels and then using a different one. The same theme was used for all four levels of Mr. X's fortress, as well as the same theme being used for all four levels of Dr. Wily's fortress. 92. Takeshi's Castle In Nippon, this show was popular enough to spawn two Famicom games featurin'... the Family Trainer. The Family Trainer is the Famicom version of the NES Power Pad. In Japan, however, the Family Trainer was a bigger hit and consequently considerably more games were produced for it there. Games ranged from Aerobics to Maze Adventure to the super hilarious Takeshi's Castle. In this review, we take a close-up look at part 2 of the Takeshi's Castle Family Trainer series. To play this game you need a Family Trainer, a Twin Famicom or Famicom, Fuun Takeshijou Tsuu Famicom Cart, and some orange socks. Gotta have the orange socks! If you're a Famicom pro, you may have noticed that the Family Trainer is on the wrong side in this picture. To start, you select your "challenge" with the contoller. After that, the game play is done solely with the mat. The mat must be on side B. Now to the orange-socked action...

91. Galaga Galaga is a sequel to Galaxian and has similar gameplay. The player controls a spaceship (which can move only right or left) and shoots at swarms of incoming insect-like aliens that fly in formation above him and occasionally swoop down to bomb him in a kamikaze-like dive. The enemies in the top row will sometimes dive with one or two escorts. Enemies that survive a dive will rejoin the formation from the top. When all enemies are destroyed, the player moves on to the next level. The game is over when the player's last ship is destroyed or captured.

Rampage Up to three simultaneous players control the monsters George (a King Kong-like gorilla) or Lizzie (a Godzilla-like dinosaur/lizard), created from humans who were mutated by various methods. They need to destroy all buildings in a high-rise city to advance to the next city. On their way they can destroy helicopters, tanks, taxis, police cars, boats, and trolleys, as well as eat people. The monsters can jump and climb buildings, and attack enemies and buildings with punches. Buildings also take damage when jumped on. The player receives damage from enemy bullets, grenades, shells, etc., or from falls. Damage can be recovered by eating the right food, such as fruit, roast chicken, or soldiers. If a monster takes too much damage, it reverts back into a naked human and starts walking off the screen sideways covering their private parts with their hands. (while in this state, the player can then be eaten by another player.) If the player continues, the human will mutate back into the monster (or fly on a blimp if off screen when player presses Start.) with a full life bar. Many players would intentionally deplete their life bar for the sake of experiencing this shameful but exciting public humiliation. Smashing open windows generally reveals an item or person of interest, which may be either helpful or harmful. Helpful items include food or money, dangerous ones include bombs, electrical appliances, and cigarettes. Some items can be both, for example a toaster is dangerous until the toast pops up, and a photographer must be eaten quickly before he dazzles the player's monster with his flash, causing it to fall. If a monster eats a toilet, they immediately go into a choking fit that is quite humorous to watch. When a civilian is present waving their hands out a window, (signalling for help), if one of the creatures grabs them, that player's points meter begins to rapidly increment. This was the 'undocumented' trick to achieving a record score in the game. The only problem is that each player can hold only one type of person. George can hold women and Lizzie can hold men, Rampage takes place through 128 days through cities across North America. The characters get a mega vitamin bonus which heals all the characters and gives out a ton of points. After this, the cities continue again. In terms of points, the point meter only goes up to 9,999,999. After that, the meter resets back to one million.

89. Mega Man 4 In the year 20XX, one year after the events of the Gamma Project and Dr. Wily's overtaking of it (and Wily's supposed "demise"), Dr. Light received a letter from a mysterious Russian scientist named Dr. Cossack claiming that he was the superior robot engineer in all the world. Cossack stated further that he would unleash his army of robots upon the world as a "test" for Light to see which of them was the best. Of course, Light would not stand for this, so once again, peace in the world was shattered, and Mega Man was called forth from his search for Wily (whom they had yet to find) to go after Cossack's Robot Masters. This time, however, Dr. Light had an upgrade ready for Mega Man's Buster. He had modified it into what he calls the "Mega Buster," which allows him to charge/focus energy into powerful plasma shots. Upon defeating the eight Robot Masters designed by Cossack, Mega Man makes his way to the scientist's icy fortress and fights his way through the stronghold and ultimately defeats him, but before he delivers the coup de grace, Proto Man teleports in with Cossack's daughter, Kalinka. Dr. Wily had kidnapped Dr. Cossack's daughter and forced him to build an army of robots to fight Mega Man in order to win his daughter back. Now that his plan had been revealed by Proto Man, Dr. Wily stepped out of the shadows and Mega Man gave chase to Wily's lair, where he fights through the newly built Skull Castle, and this time defeats Wily, though he again does not manage to capture him. The fourth iteration features several enhancements and changes from previous games, including: * The ability to charge the Buster, which is now called the "Mega Buster" * Two new utilities for Mega Man to use: a grappling hook (called the Wire Adapter) and a balloon dispenser (called the Balloon Adapter). This is the only game to date that has these items. * A helper robot, Flip-Top (Eddie), who will appear in certain stages to give the player a random item. * This was the first game in which passwords no longer saved your accumulated Energy Tanks. * Like Mega Man 2, this game also has a section with automatic scrolling, where the player has to keep up with the scroll. This is in Stage 3 of Dr. Cossack's Citadel. * There is a glitch in the game in which the second continue points in the fortress stages (between the boss doors) sometimes don't work. This is the only game to have this glitch. * When the Pharaoh Shot is being charged, a pinkish fireball appears above Mega Man and grows as the weapon is being charged; this fireball can hit enemies if touched and disappears upon doing so, but Mega Man can still fire another charged Pharaoh Shot when the player release the Fire button. It is unknown if this is a glitch or an intended trick within the game. In addition, this game reveals for the first time the complete origin of Mega Man. In the English NES version and in the Anniversary Collection rerelease, Mega Man's original name is Rock like the Japanese version. In this game, Mega Man is able to fire shots that are more powerful. When the player holds the button to fire the Mega Buster, Mega Man starts to glow. When the player releases the button, Mega Man fires a shot that is more powerful than his non-charged shot. This is the only NES game where the Mega Buster can remain charged even after being hit by an enemy. Although this was the first game with the Mega Buster, the shape of the fully-charged shots does not resemble the way it looked in later games. In fact, it looks more like a partially charged shot from the later games, with the partially charged shot in this game looking like just an enlarged regular shot. The "familiar" shape of a charged shot would first appear in the next NES Mega Man title. Unlike Mega Man 2 and 3, the player can revisit previously completed Robot Master stages, but this time with the Robot Master's lair empty (First game since the first one to do so). The player starts with three lives whenever he or she starts or resumes a game. The player can earn a maximum of ten lives. This game features one of three instances in the Mega Man series where the side scrolling is steady and controlled by the computer, rather than the player. This takes place in the third stage of Cossack's Fortress. The second instance, which is significantly more limited, takes place in Mega Man 2 at the end of the first stage of Skull Castle II, where Mega Man is being chased by a large dragon which serves as the stage's boss. Also, in Rock Man & Forte, the start of Tengu Man's stage features an auto-scrolling screen. The following Robot Masters appear in this game. The character designer is listed after the robot. * Bright Man * Pharoah Man * Drill Man * Ring Man * Toad Man * Dust Man * Dive Man * Skull Man After defeating all the Robot Masters, Mega Man is forced to face what are considered to be the final bosses. * Moslaya * Square Machine * Cockroach Twins * Dr. Cossack - Cossack Catcher * Mettaur Daddy * Takotrash * Dr. Wily - Wily Machine 4 (Phase 1) * Dr. Wily - Wily Machine 4 (Phase 2) * Dr. Wily - Wily Capsule There are many parallels in this game with Mega Man 2, most of them musical. The fanfare to introduce each level, and the victory fanfare, are all nearly the same as in Mega Man 2. The other notable parallel is in both games, the last level of Wily's Fortress (and the game) is a simple L shape, with the battle against Wily taking place in a lab room that has been darkened. In Mega Man 2, this level features acid drops that are timed to be avoided simply by running steadily past them, while in Mega Man 4, this level contained robo-slugs that could be destroyed to recover weapon energy in preparation for the final battle. (Similarly, the last level of Mega Man 6 is in an L-shape, but features much more variety than the last levels of 2 or 4.)

88. Battle of Olympus This game is about a Greek named Orpheus, in Ancient Greece. His love, Helene, was poisoned by a snake and died. Later Orpheus learns that Helene was actually taken by Hades, god of the underworld, to become his bride. Upon hearing this, Orpheus begins his journey to save Helene. There are several locations in Greece that can be visited; * Arcadia * Attica * Argolis * Peloponessus * Laconia * Crete * Phthia * Phrygia During this adventure, Orpheus will need to meet the Greek gods and gain their favor. Starting with Zeus, the leader of the Olympian gods, who encourages the other gods to grant Orpheus powers. These powers are in the form of a weapon, a shield, and other special equipment. Among them a harp, which summons Pegasus to carry Orpheus to far locations. Orpheus will also encounter mythological creatures such as the: Taurus, Lamia, Cyclops, Centaur, Talos, Minotaur, Cerberus, Stymphalian Birds, Nemean Lion and also a Siren. He will fight his way deep into the underworld, fight and defeat Hades, and finally save Helene. He will acquire several items depicted in the Greek mythology, such as the Harp of Apollo, the Sword of Hephaestus, the Staff of Prometheus and the Sandals of Hermes.
