....and golly wow. Gerwitz, Hayes, Lagana & Co. could pray to all the gods combined to write a damned good Rumble match like this, and it'd be nowhere near the awesomeness of this match. The commentators, the crowd, the wrestlers and characters, the placing, the pace......they just don't exist anymore like this. No one was lying around, everyone was active the whole time. After 50 minutes, you could really believe Flair had lost 10 pounds like Bobby kept saying because he looked like he was going thru hell ( but with more hair than today's Flair). There were no "hot spot" segments that looked incredibly choreographed. It didn't all look pretty, but it looked real. Almost everyone looked like they had a chance of winning; and those who didn't either made it look good or weren't around to mess things up. The crowd totally turned on Hogan at the end, which was quite a rarity at the time - and even now refreshing to see a very pro-Hogan crowd in the days of Hulkamania boo him and chant someone else's name over his. And Gorilla and Heenan just pwned every other commentating team ever - Bobby's desperation to see Flair win, and Gorilla's playing the straight man but laying it into Heenan just enough to drive him crazy. The Rumble remains my favorite match of the year, and I hope (despite not liking the 'E that much anymore) this year's match is memorable and great. But I just don't think it can ever be as good as this one was.

It was a great PPV.
"It's not fair, it's not fair to Flair!"
Heenan's shining moment. He was gold during that Rumble.

Everything was so right for that. Heenan's commentary and the celebration was just awesome.

The reason why that Rumble is so good also is that it is for the title! So that ups the ante a lot with knowing that a handfull of people can walk out of the areana the champ.
A few lines I love from that Rumble
When Flair enters 3rd
Heenan: DAMNIT!!! NO NO NO!!!!
Jake the Snake comes into the ring
Heenan and Monsoon together: Jake.... the Snake..... Roberts
Heenan: Its not a skirt its a kilt!!
1 min later
Heenan: Its a skirt!

( but with more hair than today's Flair). Well, yeah, he was fifteen years younger, you know.

You know how we laugh when Hogan exagerrates about WrestleMania III? I do the same when people talk about Royal Rumble 1992. Hyperboles, left and right.
It was a great Rumble, don't get me wrong, but if anyone other than Flairs win it, I'm sure people would have looked at it differently.

My favourite quote was when Heenan said " He's the best President since Noriega" after Jack Tunney had run through the details regarding the Rumble.

Flair makes that Rumble. But there's a second thing that makes it: The crowd. Now, I'm not just saying this cuz I go to the events in Albany, but it is great to watch the progression of the crowd. When Flair enters, he's totally over as a heel. By about 3/4 the way through the match, you can see the crowd changing. When Flair wins, he actually gets a nice face pop.

My biggest complaint about the match is that for all the time Hogan and Savage are in the ring together, they literally have ZERO interaction. They never touch, look at each other, or even fight the same guy together. I was hoping they'd either team up or fight at some point.
And, and I never saw the original PPV broadcast, only edited versions so I've never heard the fabled booing of Hogan at the end.

Never seen it (I'm a young'n) but I'll go out of my way to do so now. IMO, the Rumble is the WWE's true highlight of the year.

People were actually cherring Sid over Hogan, and yet Hogan still gave that look like he had the fans in his palm.

I always just assumed people were lying/hating on Hogan when they said he was booed in the match because when I rented the tape back in 92 or so he got the typical face pop as always LOL

I myself wasn't there, but a few friends were, and they said when Hogan got tossed the crowd popped big time, but, of course, it was edited out (including on the Ric Flair DVD set), and that when Flair won (as I stated before) the crowd also popped, but this too was dulled down.

After Jake got tossed, Savage did NOTHING in that match. He tossed the Iron Shiek, but he was just......there, until he got knocked out by Sid and Flair. Almost like that self-elimination took it all out of him.

Back when I was in middle school, I watched this a few times. I remember it fondly and I still think it was the best Rumble ever. I only wish they could come up with something that would at least equal it. Dream on, I guess...
