I think the Ultimate Warrior said it best. The camera was at the right place at the right time. It was perhaps a work at first, but soon turned into a shoot.
In fact look at Bret's whole run in 1997, all but Bret did was complain about he's been screwed from the WWF, Austin, screwed about the ending of Wrestlemania 12.

Shoot. I'll believe that until somehow someone can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt otherwise.

It was a shoot. I will believe that until either Shawn Michaels, Vince McMahon, and/or Bret Hart say it was a work.

Yea, that Warrior has it nailed down, the camera was at the right place at the right time - at a live PPV.

It is a shoot that will become part of an elaborate work.

Ive been thinking about it a lot lately.
On one hand-
Why didn't Vince Have Bret drop the belt on the Raw before SS and then win by DQ at SS?
It seems very convienient there was a documentary being made at this time but who knows
Couldn't Vince have made Bret sign a contract saying he wouldn't show up on Nitro?
On the other hand-
Vince somehow got a black eye(Bret punched him)
Bret didn't work with the WWF ever after it
If it was a work, why would Vince give him a huge angle when he was going to WCW.
If it was a work it didn't look like it was leading to anything.

If it was a work, why would Vince give him a huge angle when he was going to WCW. If it was a work it didn't look like it was leading to anything. Not to say that it was a work, but to play devil's advocate: This huge angle helped get both Vince over as a heel and helped Bret out giving him some heat, so both men benefited immensely from it. Since Bret didnt want to do the job, it made it so Bret really didnt have to, and wouldve been a nice compromise between both parties. That said, I think it was probably a shoot.

Allow me to try and confuse you some more. ;D Ive been thinking about it a lot lately. Why have some leaving your company for your competitor go out with a win? True It would have been unenforceable. Once he left, Hart could do what he wanted. That could be furthering the idea of it being a work. There was the HOF and DVD but, the concussion and stroke could have prevented it. He knew that was going to be used but, the controversy and heel turn for him would be a lot bigger and worth more. That would have ruined the surprise and made it seem to much like a work for it to be a convincing shoot.

I don't know. I feel like its POSSIBLE Vince asked Bret to take part in this angle, because it all played out so amazing that it HAD to be booked. But, I think Bret did have legit hatred for Vince stemming from Owen's death. But, to be honest, either scenario wouldn't shock me.

Shoot. No doubt. I mean theres no way everyone would keep quiet for this long, and there was no real payoff for Bret or anything...

Let's review the footage of Bret spitting in Vince's face.

At this point, I honestly wish it was a work (say that 10 times fast). It would have been the best angle they could have ever dreamed of having, considering they let the cat out of the bag while Bret was still able to work.
