Looking around at the various other professional wrestling promotions, I've noticed that, with some exceptions, the guys wrestling there are mostly of 'regular human stock'. In good shape, perhaps, but of average size.
Yet in the WWE, pretty much all the guys you see are in the 6'4 range and over 230 pounds or so. Which isn't normal, really. I mean, I've met maybe a handful of people that closely resemble a WWE wrestler Superstar, generally on the beach with tiny Asian girls on their arms.
In what will perhaps sound like a silly question, I'm curious,
Why is size such a big f***in' deal, for Pete's sake?

Vince McMahon has always been obsessed with wrestlers being "larger than life supermen". So he makes a point to look for the largest and most physically cut specimens he can find.

The thing is, I've never cared about how big a guy is or how good he looks. I've always been interested in good stories and good matches, but mostly good stories. From my very first days of watching wrestling, I never thought 'wow he's big' or 'wow, look how tall he is'. I just really got into the characters.
This is why I've never understood what the big deal is. I can understand why you want your guys to stick out and all, but ... that's not all it's about, you know? If a guy looks great but can't wrestle or talk a lick, why would I care about him?

To be fair, seeing two roided-up giants beating the crap out of each other is pretty entertaining when seen live. When you see the wrestlers on tv you don't get to see just how big they are since they're always surrounded by similarly sized people. Believe me, if I owned a fed and saw Viscera walking down the street my first thought would be 'I'm gonna sign this guy and push him to the moon'.

Becasue the average person pays to see people they wouldn't see in everyday life. Bada bing. The masses don't want to be entertained by "pretty good," especially when they're paying for it. Note how the WNBA isn't a bigger draw than it is. It's well known that you'll see some good basketball, but you won't see the reverse tomahawk "OHMIGAWD" dunks that you would at an NBA game. Wrestling's the same way. If I'm paying for something (and before you argue that watching TV isn't free, when we watch TV, we're 'paying' by subjecting myself to ads), I want to see something incredible, and I want it to look the part. Now that's not to take anything away from anyone in TNA, ROH, or anywhere else. They can put on incredible matches, but for the most part, they don't look like "wow" guys. Their proverbial steak is very good, but you have to sell the sizzle in the entertainment business. |

At least they have cruiserweights now. In old-school days, the 1-2-3 Kid was tiny, and he was going 215 at the time.

Vince once said in an interview he prefers wrestlers to be big because it has that "Superhero" quality to it.

Not to mention, look at the two stars who arguably launched the WWF: Andre the Giant, and Hulk Hogan. Andre was naturally enormous, and Hulk was quite large himself (steroids will do that to a guy. I'm looking at you Triple H.)
Vince has never been one to stray far from a working formula. So, when he found that his big boys made big money back in the day, and that the other feds didn't have such large athletes (overall, that is. There were certainly exceptions.) he ran with it, and hasn't looked back since.

Think back to the 80's/early 90's; yes, muscle-bound meatheads did often seem to dominate the WWF landscape, but remember who some of the biggest names were at the time? Roddy Piper: hardly "massive", by any stretch. The Hart Foundation: both men, while strong, looked naturally built. Paul Orndorff, Volkoff, early Randy Savage, Ricky Steamboat, Dynamite Kid and younger Davey Boy, the list can go on, and on, and on. These men were mostly big, mostly strong...but none seemed like towering, invincible animals, either. No, some were smaller, more lithe; some were bulky, almost chubby looking; some were just cut, some were somewhat taller, some shorter, etc. I'll refer back to a part of the popular Samoa Joe/CM Punk shoot interview, where they mention how, back in the day, and during WWF's most successful runs, it always seemed like the "landscape" of body types in the company was varied, covering a fairly wide range of shapes, sizes, and appearances. It helped people get over by looking unique from one another, and allowing them to be more distinguishable. Hell, think back to how impressive guys like King Kong Bundy looked, or how huge Kevin Nash seemed initially, or Vader or The Giant in WCW, etc. etc. That's because, while there were certainly big men in both companies, they stood out as particularly big and/or tall and powerful. Today, it just seems like everybody fits that mold, so it's literally lost every bit of it's impact on the audience. When Sting was trapped in the ring against Vader, you found yourself thinking "What can Sting do to possibly survive against this monster?!" Today, when John Cena steps up to Umaga, can you honestly say you feel anything resembling that, "Superman Cena" booking issues aside? |

Why are there so many huge muscular guys in the WWE? Because most WWE fans want huge muscular guys. Listen to the pops Lashley gets. They aren't deafening, but it's a good indication of how popular you can get with huge muscles and nothing else.

Even in comparison to the two-man game that the NBA has become over the last fifteen years, the below-the-rim layup fest that is the WNBA is hideous to watch. The WNBA gets worse ratings than professional bowling because it's not entertaining to watch, something that can be changed with a proper tweaking of the rules. |
