Non-serious answer: The Rock whipes a monkey's ass with what you think. Serious answer: People like the guy in short, because he's cool. But there's more to that. With the rise of popularity of the television show came the rise of comedy promos or comedy skits, that didn't really do much for buisness except make for good television. They are different from money promos, where a wrestler puts over a match or event that people will pay to see. The Rock was somebody who would mix the comedy and the entertainment aspect into his promos, while at the same time sell the match and make people look forward to seeing the match. So it not only made for good television, but it made people want to see The Rock wrestle more. Also, repetition is a key to success. People when they critique The Rock, they talk about how he said the same thing over and over again. Well, who cares. The people certainly didn't. As a matter of fact, he probably would have disappointed the people if he didn't. If you notice during the Hollywood Rock gimmick, he rarely did his promos where he spouted off a bunch of his catch phrases because he knew that would get over. When he has a bunch of similar catch phrases which people know and recognize, when he says them, the people pop. And the people will want to hear him say these catch phrases. This is also why people's established moves get bigger pops then random moves they do during a match. This is also why finishing moves get big reactions. So the promo argument is a bad one, because obviously Rock could talk people into the arenas and keep them entertained on television, and him saying the same thing is a bad argument because it's what the people wanted to see. It's like, Crash Holly said this about Rikishi that some people think he's awful, yet the people went nuts for everything he did, so how could it be awful. And if you still think he's awful, why would he change it? The reason John Cena is so similar to The Rock is not The Rock's fault, lol. I've always said that Cena is a mixture between Hogan, Austin and Rock, which is why everything seems so forced and why he may not be as successful as them. Not only that, but Rock sells better. I used an example numerous occasions when people compare the two. At Taboo Tuesday 2005 and the Royal Rumble 2001, Rock and Cena were both thrown through tables. They waited for a bit to get back. The difference between the two is Cena came running into the ring attacking Michaels and Angle, and Rock slowly came into the ring to attack Kane, was cut off by The Undertaker, and went selling for the rest of the match. The Rock is 10 times smarter then Cena when it comes to wrestling, which isn't a knock on Cena, because I think you put any name down there and the Rock is 10 times smarter then them. Raven is said by a lot of people (myself included, being a mark for him, but I'm also a mark for Rock too) that Rock was so smart, and he truely was. The Rock grew up in wrestling so he got a lot of knowledge from his family (Afa, Sika, Rocky Johnson, Peter Maivia) and he picked Pat Patterson's brain for everything he could. Did Rock go to Hollywood? Yeah. But you know what, would you rather take bump after bump for 10 years and make less money, or would you rather go into Hollywood, takes less damage and makes loads of cash. Besides, if his career in Hollywood runs dry, he has wrestling to come back to, and his body is in great shape because of all the bumps he didn't take. So basically, The Rock is without question one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. It boggles my mind too that people think he wasn't that good of a technical wrestler. So what. He was very fast in the ring, had some pretty good moves, and could work with anybody. You know what kind of style The Rock wrestled? His opponents. He was like a chameleon in the ring. If he wrestled Undertaker, he would take one colour. If he wrestled Kurt Angle, he would take another colour. If he wrestled The Hurricane, he would take another colour. I think that's why he may not have had much technical ability, because he had his opponent's type of match, and did what they did. He was never selfish, from lots of people, never known to get a big head, apparently was always respectful. Rock is the perfect wrestler in my opinion, and deserved everything he got. I pretty much agree word-for-word. And while I do like Cena, he does seem forced at times. Every word that came out of the Rock's mouth felt natural. Probably why he went into movies, because he's a hell of an actor. The Rock is quite easily my favorite wrestler of all time. Not because he was the most technically sound, but because he was easily the most entertaining. And I watch wrestling first and foremost to be entertained. I can be entertained with awesome matches or killer promos, and the Rock deliver on both in spades. Also, for the "BAWWWWWWWWWWW ROCK SOLD OUT BAWWWWWWWWWWW" people, he didn't. I'd know I'd take 7 figures making movies that are about a tenth as physically demanding as wrestling was, not to mention not having to travel and being able to spend far more time with my family. I'd do it in a heartbeat, no matter how much I "loved the business," and you'd be a damn fool to squander than opportunity if it came.

I've said it once and I'll say it again: I've never, NEVER, understood how people can stand up and decry Cena for having made poop jokes (though he really hasn't done them since his feud with Booker T over the US Title years ago) and gay jokes over the years, yet The Rock, in his prime and at the peak of his popularity, talked about hermaphrodites, anal insertions and poontang pie, in every single damn promo he cut. Like, every promo from 1999 to 2001 had all that. Yet somehow he's this bastion of awesome promo skills compared to Cena? Give me a break.

someone has to start it the question has to be asked why all the love for The Rock. People hate John Cena and the similaritys between the two are uncanny. The peoples elbow is just a stupid as the 5 knuckle shuffle. The Rock bottom is just as weak as the F-U. And these people who try and compare him to Flair as an interview as someone like Flair is absurd His interviews always came off forced and the same old catchphrases and by the end just bored the crap out of me And above all that he ran of to Hollywood never to look at the wrestling business again so again the question is why do people like this guy. Agreed. I hate/hated The Rock. Another perfect example of WWE's cotton candy version of the wrestling business.

Lets look at some of the Rock's main phrases:
-Shining something up, turning it sideways, and sticking it straight up someones candy ass.
-Roody Poo. (WTF does that even mean?)
-Poontang Pie
-Stuff involving monkey's asses.
-Calling Kevin Kelly a hermaphridite or hermi for short.
-Insinuating someone is gay in many different ways.
-Strudal and things his opponets like to do with it.
Yet we all love the Rock. Im no Cena fan, but he makes a gay joke or something like that and everyones up in arms and yelling, OMG CENAS TEH CORNY AND STOOPID!!!!!!11!!!!!

I loved the Rock, but can understand why people may not have liked him. His promos usually cracked me up but I admit I was never a big fan of the "poon tang pie" crap.

It's called taste. People like different things. For example, I like mint chocolate chip better rocky road. And, I like The Rock better than John Cena. You might like Cena better than the Rock, but there are people out there who don't. It's just a matter of opinion.

Let's see:
The Rock wasn't pushed as Superman. He actually lost at times.
He never did anything as stupid as Cena's "Marine" gimmick. When he did Hollywood Rock it made sense, here he was back from Hollywood. Cena saluting people after making a horrible movie where he plays a Marine, you can't tell me that isn't dumb. I t was a movie role dammit. If he had come back as "Hollywood" Cena, that I could have bought into.
Unfortunately for Cena, The Rock had much better performers to work with. Austin, Foley, Taker in his prime, all better than guys like Khali and Orton. Edge was maybe Cena's best feud to date. Hell, The Rock and Foley together is pretty much the peak of awesome when it comes to the WWE in the last 10 years.
Cena is unfortunately on top during a low point. Without the technical skill of a Bret Hart, who smarks seem to latch on too even though he was on top during the previous low period, he's forever going to be a target of smarks.
Cena has been dealt weak hands, and has managed to make something out of them. You can't expect him to pull off what The Rock did.

I loved the Rock.
I don't care that he repeated himself a lot in promos, he got louder pops than most anyone on the roster. People cared about him and he got people into it. There are a lot of things you can say about his promos, I find "forced" to be completely ridiculous. He flowed in promos.
I don't care that his finishers didn't look devastating, I watch to be entertained, and he entertained me. I can actually suspend relief enough to watch finishers that are theatrical and enjoy them without harping on how little damage they would do or how bad I think it makes the other guy look to be finished by that move. He got me to care more than anyone else on the roster. You can compare his moveset to Cena's all you want, they aren't the same performers. For starters, Rock would actually lose, even without shenanigans. He wasn't perpetually in the main event, the story wasn't just about Rock like it is with Cena. The Rock would actually lose on occasion, whereas Cena rarely does, even in handicap matches.
As for leaving and never looking back, I wouldn't say a who cut a promo for Wrestlemania never looked back, nor would I say a person who still is known largely by his wrestling handle never looked back. Yeah, he retired, but tell me that you wouldn't if given the same choice he had following SNL and I'll call you a liar. As an actor, he has more longevity, a less demanding job physically, and is making more money reaching a wider audience.

I'm sorry but the Rock Bottom is one of the best finishers of all time. Simple, and believable with much domination.

The Rock was GREAT. He's got charisma oozing out his friggin' PORES. He's smart, funny, and knew how to give the people what they wanted. What more do you need?
erisi236: That's AWESOME. What game is it from?

The Rock was a killer heel. As a face, he got to the point where you could literally sing-a-long to his promos. That's not entertaining to me.
