Steve Austin gave a speech to WWE talent at SummerSlam that rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Austin's three main points were that the talent dressed like slobs in public and they need to dress and carry themselves like professionals. He went on to say that the company has no superstars and it's time for someone to step up. Austin told the story of how he came up with his own gimmick and became a top guy.
One wrestler noted that Austin was out of touch with what the current wrestlers are making (salary wise) and what the current conditions are. Some were also shocked that Austin has became a puppet for McMahon. Some guys feel that Austin was acting the way he was because he is dealing with the guilt of his movie flopping.

Wow, that sounds like a morale booster [sarcasm]
He's kinda washed up anyways, maybe if his movie came out in 97-98 when he was hot it probably would've done better than it did.
And shouldn't he be the last person to talk about how people dress in public?

According to the report I read, Austin also said something along the lines of "Stop dying, it makes the company look bad" and "In my first year I only made a measley, bulls*** $200,000." in a room full of guys where some of them don't clear $70,000

"Ya gotta wear a suit, son!"
This is far away from Austin's gimmick.

How have the conditions changed since Austin was there full time?
Although i might not like getting talked down to about how i dress or whatever, listening to Austin may not be a super bad idea, after all, he has a point about how being himself got him over and such.

This coming from a man who was worn nothing but short jeans and black t-shirts with middle fingers on the the shirts. Maybe he was upset that the superstars don't publicly beat people up and spill beer all over them.

Austin wouldn't make any money right now if it wasn't for Vince McMahon. Of course he's going to be another corporate lapdog. Im not surprised by this at all.

I'll give the Texas Wifebeater this. He, like Foley, toured for years as a low/mid-card gutter, honed their in-ring/mic skills. It wasn't like he was given the silver-platter main event dinner special like some people. He created a gimmick, worked on it, and it caught fire (with WWE supporting it). Hell, look at Jericho. He didn't simply read scripts. He improvised and happened to create memorable lines ("NaaaaaaVAH!") and dammit, he's my favorite heel ever.

Well, there isn't really a Superstar of either his or Rock's caliber in the company right now.
When is the last time you've seen a wrestler on the TV Guide? People don't care about it the way the did when Austin was on top of the world, he's kind of right. They don't have any real "super" stars.
Ya don't see a high school full of kids in Matt Hardy T-shirts for christ sakes, or quoting Batista.

Perhaps, but things were different in terms of creative, nowadays everything and their mother is scripted to a T, so you can't really deviate from the script otherwise Vince will probably fire your ass.

Did he then say he was going to kick the ass of whoever walked through the door next? And did it turn out to be (GASP) Rob Van Dam? And if this is true, who the hell is Steve Austin to tell anyone how to dress? Didn't he just wear jeans and 3:16 t-shirts everywhere?

The problem with the company these days is the fact that wrestlers are given no freedom to get themselves over. Most of the time they're dumped with a horrible gimmick and have no room to expand it.

I think it was in 2004 before Wrestlemania, when they had Eddie/Angle and Benoit/HHH/HBK on various covers of TV Guide. The only big star I see people wearing merch of is John Cena.

Eh, I understand why they're angry but it's up to them whether or not they take Austin's advice, it's not like he's holding a gun to their head or something.
