I thought it was a pointless speech to give him, since ECW is presented as being virtually identical to everything else in the WWE. It seems pointless now, but I really think that when ECW was first started, the intention was to make it have its own feel and not have the same presentation as Raw or Smackdown. The problem is, from Week 1 when Vince overruled virtually everything that Paul Heyman booked, it was a WWE show through and through.

Which was a boneheaded move on the part of Mr. Genius Businessman.
Hey Vince... there are some people who hate your product. There are some people who would agree with what Styles was saying. You have to know this, or else you wouldn't have had him say it. So why not make money off of an entirely different fanbase from Raw and Smackdown? Why not make ECW, if not in the same spirit as the original, something completely unique? Are you really that insecure?
Oh.

Vince was hoping that "entirely different fanbase" would follow Joey to ECW and crank up the ratings. We all know what happened there.

The entirely different fanbase probably did follow Joey and probably did give ECW a chance when it was re-launched. The problem is that ECW was basically just WWE Brand #3, and nothing like the alternative product that it seemed like they wanted.
I like ECW currently, but it's only because I have accepted that it is a WWE show. As a 1-hour WWE show, I think it is just fine. But if I was watching expecting something to remind me of the original ECW, I would be horribly disappointed.
