A combination of Vince being a prick and Vince knowing people liked JR and thus he was always a good source of heat, if I had to guess. JR had credibility with audiences and was tolerant of being put in bullshit situations in a way where bullying someone like Kevin Kelly past a certain point wouldn't have worked anywhere near as well.

It's really frustrating that AEW's games division can't match the quality of the on-screen product. My guess is Tony is not a gamer so he's not willing to throw the same level of money at it. I think it might be that he saw Yukes & THQ and thought, okay they have experience with this. And sorta, but obviously there were a lot of factors he would not have considered, like how THQ Nordic has kind of seemed dysfunctional for years now. Like, had he spent more, I am not really sure who else is available in the wrestling-game market. Though, if they had not announced it as fast as they did, and maybe given it 6 months more or something in development, which throwing money at it could do, then yeah, maybe they'd have avoided a lot of this mess, even if it would have made Punk and Cody being in the game that much more jarring.

I am less surprised that this happened and more that it hadn't happened sooner.

It's kind of a shitty thing to do during an actual match, but I am more sympathetic during a terrible angle.

And even the legendary Jim Johnston would recycle a theme Yep, probably most notably with Kurt Angle and the Patriot. It's not, in and of itself, a bad thing, especially if you do something creative with it like Ezekiel Jackson and the Brawl for All theme, or Cesaro's reuse of Dean Malenko's that he had for a while. This is just not a very flattering example because of how homogynous a lot of Def Rebel's stuff tends to be in general.

DOUKI over Hiromu is certainly an upset, but not one I mind.

I don't know if this is grammar, but the one thing that drives me up a wall is "I could care less". If you CAN care less, then you DO care. I do often wonder if this initially began as "I could care less", with the implied "but not by much". I know it's tempting to just assume people are stupid, but usually these things are bastardizations of phrases that initially made sense, rather than people just spouting gibberish for the sake of doing it.

F***. The one chance we had to be rid of FTR for a while and Florida bungles it at the finish line. Tony still would've loaded the shows with Dax singles matches... They've had Dax do singles matches plenty of times, so yeah, unless he wanted time off, that was always going to be the move, probably. Dax has always been the stronger singles guy, anyway. Kinda how I figured this would play out if I'm honest. All they really had to go on was the other guy saying he had a gun, which isn't much. Yeah, unless they got him on camera or found a gun in his car without any real break in-between where he could have plausibly gotten a gun, etc, it was realistically going to be difficult to impossible to prove beyond reasonable doubt.

I would probably do Cody vs Rock at Summerslam or something, potentially with Rock winning the title and Cody winning it back in the fall or winter, or Cody beating him. Roman then has conflict with Rock leading into Mania, probably. I don't think a title really uplifts their match, since by then, you'd have the Bloodline issues being the actual program.

I wonder if this is them feeling the evidence just isn't there or what.

This gets suggested often, but the issue is that there isn't really any clear end goal for it. To what end? What does breaking the team up give them?
Honestly, especially if Big E ends up having to be retired, they can just ride it out 'til retirement.

Dana White's bosses: "allow?..." More or less what I expect is happening, that Dana is preemptively saving face (as much as Dana is capable of it, anyhow) by trying to act like he'd be keen on it, versus knowing they can just make him acquiesce if they want to.

Over/under on us getting one last Flair vs Lawler match? (which would be maybe their 5th ever, right?) In fairness, Lawler seems to be an extremely safe worker if he's not hitting you with a throne Generally, though he did break Heyman and Jimmy Hart's jaws with punches. Jimmy Hart, he insists was on accident, despite it suspiciously coming after Jimmy Hart mocked him in a promo for breaking his leg in a way seen as Jerry Jarrett reminding Lawler of his place, so he may have had ulterior motives. Still, Jerry swears it was just an accident. Heyman, he owns up to intentionally injuring.

I just thought of my favorite trope of these threads: If other stuff wasn’t on TV, then the wrestling show would’ve been #1 Here, it kind of makes sense, but I know that in general, Tracy Smothers used to make fun of that philosophy being applied to bad attendance, usually bemoaning a local sporting event or concert. "McDonalds is open 24 hours, how can we compete with that?"

WWE have had all sorts of celebrities over the years that I guarantee Vince had never heard of and you're telling me he'd turn down Metallica? Highly unlikely. I also don't know why Metallica would play for free. The story just doesn't make sense. Even KISS when they were REALLY angling for every bit of crossover appeal they could gather up from every avenue still held WCW up for quite a bit of money first, so I imagine someone who probably had a stronger bargaining position weren't going to do it, especially since it isn't like big bands were hounding the WWF for such a spot when they were much more successful the next couple of years.

I do have to wonder how much AEW screwed themselves doing business with THQ Nordic, who honestly has been having issues for years now.

I very much doubt it. Whether or not Vince knew who they were, I don't imagine he'd shoot down something like that, especially in 1997 where the WWF was still straining to get back out of the red. It's really goddamn implausible he'd turn down such a golden opportunity when he really needed it still.

It's Asuka and Kairi, I think it's fine they didn't just steamroll them. Asuka's beaten Becky clean multiple times, among others, she has the credibility, and Kairi's been her most prolific partner.
In general, I think big shows having too few matches can be a bit weird, but I'll take it over blatant filler, usually.
