Someone a good time ago had a thread along the lines of "movies everyone likes but YOU" or "movies everyone HATES but you," well you get the idea.
The thing about film subjectivity is, even if you disagree with folks on a film's quality......you usually might understand perhaps why they didn't dig it.
Take Brian DePalma's SCARFACE remake. One of my all-time favorites, but when people complain about its running time, Pacino's way way way way over the top performance, etc.....I can sorta see their way.
But you ever seen a movie that you just CAN NOT COMPREHEND why people just hate the hell out of it?
Take a 2007 movie I was a hardcore mark for (my #2 movie of '07, in fact) of which I just saw its new Director's Cut edit......David Fincher's docu-thriller ZODIAC.
That review is coming, but in short words I think its brilliant...the sort of masterful filmmaking that people will pimp decades from now, the sort that for better or for worse, the director knows he's that goddamn good.
And yet, alot of Crappers here didn't care for it. Some thought it was boring, others wanted another lameass serial killer horror flick with an idiotic twist ending, and some had a legitimate* complaint about the movie's opening title of "Based on Actual Case Files".............
And yet, I don't see how ZODIAC is boring. Maybe I'm just so compelled by the picture's 1st half police procedural, to the second half becoming a detective tale much like ATPM.
But, that's film subjectivity I guess.
So movies you just don't get why people despise it?
*=At this rate, its practically Oliver Stone's JFK for the serial killer genre.

I'll go one better, my ex was convinced it was real for like the first half of the movie, it wasn't until the "guitar solo" scene where she realised something was a bit off.

Have you ever read or heard Pacino talk about the Tony Montana character or the performance?
He did it that way on purpose...because that was to him exactly who Tony was..a walking delusion of grandeur coupled with a touch of psychosis.
Knock the performance all they want Pacino did exactly what he meant to.
He also considers Tony one of his favorite characters..and one of the funnest to play.
Another one of his movie that gets trashed for not being as good as the first two in the series is Godfather 3.
While it had its problems it was still a great movie..

I can understand when they say it doesn't live up to the first two (and really, how many films could?), but in no way was this a bad flick. I thought it was a great film.

Envy. Walken was a comedic genius, Jack Black played a different character than usual, and Ben Stiller was good as well. As a matter of fact I thought all of the performances where decent in the movie, even the minor parts.
Can't understand the hate. Also, Battlefield Earth. It's not THAT bad. Yeah, a little boring, but no worse than anything you'd see on Sci-Fi.

The main one is The New World. My friends think it's way too long and boring, but I think it's f***ing brilliant.
Also, Waterworld. I know it's not a masterpiece, but it's much better than everyone says.

The Phantom Menace.
Ok, Jar Jar was bad, we get it. Stop bringing it up every 5 seconds. Beyond Jar Jar, it's a good movie.
"BUT BUT BUT IT'S NOT THE STAR WARS I WANTED"
Yeah, we know. It's the Star Wars George Lucas wanted. Get over yourself. Just because you bought 47 tickets to the first three movies does not mean you should magically get input on future projects.
You didn't have to watch it. You didn't have to like yet. Yet, somehow, you think your opinion should matter.

HAAAAAATTTTTEEEE. I love Liam Neeson as Qui Gon, one of my all time fav star wars characters. I also don't think the kid is nearly as bad as everyone says he is. And come on! Darth Maul!

Actually they kinda are, in that a pair of legit metal musicians (Gene Hoglan and some other guy that was also in Strapping Young Lad) are involved in the music production, even though they've done far and away better work in the past.

I had a very nasty argument with a co-worker about ALIEN.
Now, ALIEN is one of my all-time favorite films, and to this day still makes me jump out of my seat (thanks Facehugger!). The atmosphere of the film, the "used-look" sci-fi elements, a terrifying monster that kills because its in its nature to do so (no motives or revenge plots or anything), a cast of relatively unknown actors who were absolutely superb in their roles, and setting the bar (very high) for the female protagonist, all are blended masterfully to make this one of the greatest films of the 20th Century.
Now, my co-worker bitched about how it was "too slow", and that there wasn't enough gore.
ALIEN wasn't about gore, it was about emphasizing on the unknown and unseen. You don't see the monster in its entirety until near the end, and people like me were probably terrified of tthose serpentine maintenance corridors with very dim lighting and enough pipes and bulkheads to make me think that bastard could be in any one of those places.

Halloween 3.
Sure Michael Meyers isn't in it that doesn't make it any less of a good film.
