Death to Smoochy. Most of my friends utterly hate that movie. I think it's brilliant dark comedy.

Envy. Walken was a comedic genius, Jack Black played a different character than usual, and Ben Stiller was good as well. As a matter of fact I thought all of the performances where decent in the movie, even the minor parts. Can't understand the hate. Also, Battlefield Earth. It's not THAT bad. Yeah, a little boring, but no worse than anything you'd see on Sci-Fi. A lot of people don't like Envy? I like that movie... I didn't like Battlefield Earth because of that darn angle the whole movie seemed to be filmed at. I shouldn't have to crane my neck to view a film. It makes me grumpy and less likely to enjoy it. Travolta was hilarious in his over-acting. Speaking of Travolta, I liked the Punisher remake. Sure, alot of things didn't make sense and it jumped from "real to comic" a few times, but I liked it.

I had a very nasty argument with a co-worker about ALIEN. Now, ALIEN is one of my all-time favorite films, and to this day still makes me jump out of my seat (thanks Facehugger!). The atmosphere of the film, the "used-look" sci-fi elements, a terrifying monster that kills because its in its nature to do so (no motives or revenge plots or anything), a cast of relatively unknown actors who were absolutely superb in their roles, and setting the bar (very high) for the female protagonist, all are blended masterfully to make this one of the greatest films of the 20th Century. Now, my co-worker bitched about how it was "too slow", and that there wasn't enough gore. ALIEN wasn't about gore, it was about emphasizing on the unknown and unseen. You don't see the monster in its entirety until near the end, and people like me were probably terrified of tthose serpentine maintenance corridors with very dim lighting and enough pipes and bulkheads to make me think that bastard could be in any one of those places. I get annoyed by the "gore" sentiment. Horror is not about gore. It never should be. It very rarely improves the movie (notable exceptions being Dead Alive and Evil Dead). And is it just me or is the age of "MTV" editing really being lodged in people's heads? Haven't they heard of dramatic pacing and atmosphere?

Dr. Giggles. Nobody I know likes it. A healthy dose of cheesy horror humor I thought. I have fun with the character of Dr. Giggles. The movie's atmosphere seemes semi-unique. At least I remember liking his office.

I actually quite enjoyed all of the Star Wars prequel movies. I mean, take away the lame love story, and they're all pretty good.
And I'll just add Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I noticed a little bit of hate on this forum, not a lot, but I still don't understand it. It's a fairly realistic love story, and a great movie.

I think Stanley Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut" was sheer genius.

None. Even with movies I think are great, or even ones that aren't but I love anyway, I can usually see why they have their detractors as well.
Cloverfield is a prime example. I loved the film, but I can see why people weren't happy with the way it was shot, some plot holes, etc.

I liked Dare Devil. Not a comic book fan though so I was just judging what was in front of me as opposed to what I was hoping for.
K-19: The Widowmaker. I saw this one the other day and have to say I really enjoyed it. Was surprised when I looked it up on imdb afterwords that it was universally panned and was a flop. Shame.

Halloween 3. Sure Michael Meyers isn't in it that doesn't make it any less of a good film. Im sorry dude, Halloween 3 isnt bad, its pure evil.........and not the way it should be. It disolved parts of my mind.

A View to a Kill.
Roger Moore's last Bond movie and it has a pretty good story. I find the last action scenes on the bridge thrilling.
I like Moonraker too.

Clone Wars. Clone Wars was smurfing great, Menace and Revenge were horrible, but Clone was great. Attack of the Clones was my favorite of the prequels too. By alot. I find alot of people that laugh when I say the first Karate Kid is actually a good movie. Given the premise of the film and the fact that it was made in the 80's when alot of this stuff was cliche, it should have been a stupid movie. But I've always found it underrated. The acting is good all around, the characters and their relationships to each other are genuine, and the musical score is excellent.

You'll be surprised how many I've come accross who think This is Spinal Tap is a plodding piece of crap... I'm being dead serious here. Oh yeah. I got one better: I had a customer once who thought it was a real band, and was disapointed that he rented a "parody" of them. Was it one of the guys from Oasis? I forget which one, but one of the brothers thought they were a real band.

Someone a good time ago had a thread along the lines of "movies everyone likes but YOU" or "movies everyone HATES but you," well you get the idea. The thing about film subjectivity is, even if you disagree with folks on a film's quality......you usually might understand perhaps why they didn't dig it. Take Brian DePalma's SCARFACE remake. One of my all-time favorites, but when people complain about its running time, Pacino's way way way way over the top performance, etc.....I can sorta see their way. But you ever seen a movie that you just CAN NOT COMPREHEND why people just hate the hell out of it? Take a 2007 movie I was a hardcore mark for (my #2 movie of '07, in fact) of which I just saw its new Director's Cut edit......David Fincher's docu-thriller ZODIAC. That review is coming, but in short words I think its brilliant...the sort of masterful filmmaking that people will pimp decades from now, the sort that for better or for worse, the director knows he's that goddamn good. And yet, alot of Crappers here didn't care for it. Some thought it was boring, others wanted another lameass serial killer horror flick with an idiotic twist ending, and some had a legitimate* complaint about the movie's opening title of "Based on Actual Case Files"............. And yet, I don't see how ZODIAC is boring. Maybe I'm just so compelled by the picture's 1st half police procedural, to the second half becoming a detective tale much like ATPM. But, that's film subjectivity I guess. So movies you just don't get why people despise it? *=At this rate, its practically Oliver Stone's JFK for the serial killer genre. Everyone who thinks "Zodiac" is boring is probably a "Transformers" fan. I rest my case on that one.
