This one is somewhat recent. There was tons of rumors about getting a Berserker in Gears of War to attack everyone in the Mansion in multiplayer. You had have people toss smoke grenades outside the map, between the headlights of a assault vehicle. People just wanted to believe, even after it was proved false.

"or how about you could play as Akuma in Resident Evil 2, EGM printing in their magazine as a April fools joke and some people through it was real, some people still do" I know you could play as bar of Tofu that made weird noises and had no weapons. I never did understand why Capcom put Tofu in the game It's done as both a challenge and for comedy, such is my interpretatoin

There was a Final Fantasy IX one where you could make Cloud appear. It might be true, actually. Zidane does make reference to him a couple of times.

How about in Street Fighter 2 if you beat Beat every character without losing a round or match let’s you play as the four bosses Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison

You could do alot with a Gameshark. People used to say that there was no way you could get the unavailable powers in Final Fantasy Tactics.
Until you showed them those big long codes for manipulating the game. When you messed with Final Fantasy Tactics using Gameshark it had to be done just right.
Teleport 2 baby! Never fails. Look at me!

There were loads of rumours about how to get Mew.
Like, before the S.S. Anne sails off, if you have surf, you could swim to a secret island and catch Mew.
And another, where on Route 1, Mew was hiding in the grass on the other side of the fences, which you couldn't reach.

You don't need a Gameshark to get Mew in Red/Blue/Yellow, just a simple glitch will do. Basically you need to use "Fly" at the exact moment a certain Pokémon trainer (I did this near Cerulean City) notices you, so that when the exclamation mark appears above his head you are already gone. Fly wherever you like, then come back to Cerulean and fight a trainer (a youngster with a Slowpoke) above the Nugget Bridge and then fly away and back again. Walk a few steps and the menu will pop up by itself, cancel with B and get ready to fight a lv.7 Mew.
Now, I probably screwed up these instructions somehow, but the trick is real. Check Youtube for videos of the various methods.

Here's a forgotten classic--defeating the Running Man in Ocarina of Time. I went insane trying to do that. Several years later, I learned you couldn't do it.

One second, to be exact. The thing about it is, the Man would always say that you didn't have the killer instinct (their coloring) necessary to beat him. Everybody thought there was some kind of clue to beating him in that game.

Obviously, if it was a hint for beating him, you'd need Killer Instinct, but with cartridges, you can't transfer the data of games between one another.
