I disagree with Kingpin, because the tournament wasn't the point; Munson picking himself back up as a person was.
As far as the Phantasm series goes, it is true for the first three, then the final film comes full circle as Michael finally comes to accept the deaths of his brother and parents, and finally realizes in the final moments of his fantasy (or... "phantasm") that Reggie will always be there to help him as he envisions him going after the Tall Man to make things right, even if he is certain to lose.

Jerry Fierro (Adam Carolla) doesn't end up getting on the US Olympic Boxing Team at the end of "The Hammer", but that movie was "made of win" IMO, so I still came away from it smiling. (It most likely got "KO'd" by Iron Man and the like, but I highly recommend catching it on DVD)

John Woo's The Killer.
The ending makes me shed a manly tear.

No Country For Old Men But, IIRC, nobody won in that one. Edit 1: Especially not the kind of evolved caveman reading the 300+ page book from whence it came Edit 2: But it was a pretty entertaining book, just, now that I know what a shitpy ending it had, I'm not that keen on seeing the movie.
