Is the ECW title a heavyweight championship title?

Ok i noticed in Matt Hardys blog that he called himself and jeff

Matt Hardy
ECW World Heavyweight Champion

Jeff Hardy
WWE World Champion

is this accurate?, i just thought the ECW title was a TV title and the WHC was the only heavyweight title?

someone correct me if i am wrong this is baffling me...Thanks in advance

Yes.

And if you say no, then that means guys like Taz, Shane Douglas, Raven, etc. were never "real" heavyweight champs.

It's a Heavyweight title, but not a WORLD Heavyweight title.

Its on the same level of the IC title which is also a Heavyweight title. The ECW title is below the WHC and WWE titles, about the same as the IC, US, and ROH belts.

Its a Heavyweight Championship. And it has lineage to the old ECW World Title. But it is no way a World Title on the same level as the WWE, World Hvy, or even the TNA World Title.

Think of it this way, were you all celebrating that Punk won the big one when he beat Morrison or when he beat Edge?

for me it was both times. but if he beat Morrison after Edge I wouldn't have cared about his ECW title win.

The only three officially recognised world championships in the US are the WWE, WHC and TNA WHC. So as much as I'd like to say Matt got to a world title before Jeff, it's not a "real" one.

I've always considered it a World Title regardless of the opinion of whichever magazine decides which wrestling titles are world titles or not.

The ECW champion is eligible to compete in "battle of champions" style triple threat matches with the WWE Champion and World Heavyweight Champion. This imo classes it as a world championship.

I've always thought of it in line with the IC and US titles.

Used to be. I believe that was thrown out the window at last years Royal Rumble when ECW Champion Chavo Guerrero competed in the match.

In 2006 the ECW was treated on equal footing for a while. Probably through Lashley's reign. Once Morrison won it it seemed to gradually get downgraded. They even dropped the "World Heavyweight" from the title.

Have you ever seen a World Champion wrestle in a non-title match in the opening match of a Pay Per View? And job?

I think it is less valuable than the WWE Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship, but it is more valuable than the Intercontinental and United States Championships.

Good points actually, the Chavo and Morrison (like the guy but he's not World Champion material yet) title reigns did make the belt look on the same level of importance as the United States and Intercontinental belts and not on par or close to Raws and Smackdowns main belts.

But saying that there was MVPs promo a while ago where he mentioned how everyone thought Jeff would be the first Hardy to win a world title and asked Jeff how he felt about his brother beating him to it. (Think it was MVP anyway)

I guess even the WWE don't know what importance the belt has...they need a Regal vs Shelton vs Matt match to determine which belt is the most important

All that said unless the title is considered as presitgious to the wrestlers and the fans as the other two titles then it shouldn't be considered on the same level.

It's an Heavyweight Championship, but it's not a World Championship.

Not on level with the WWE and WHC titles in terms of current prestige, past lineage and tradition.

It's more or less a glorified midcard title, for guys who are a tad too good for the IC/US belts, but who can't (yet/anymore) qualify for the WWE/WHC ones

And yes, I do think the definition applies to Original ECW title too. Probably the WWECW belt is a bit more important

But the thing is, I don't think the WWE really cares if the ECW title is as prestigious as the other two. Its not supposed to be. ECW is the C show, they don't hide this fact. Its televised developmental for all intents and purposes and thats just fine.
