I could've sworn you were one of Scott's biggest supporters ;D As much as you're president of the Julio Lugo Fan Club. ;D We meet on Thursdays for 2 hours. We spend the entire time getting drunk and crying about his hideous contract. It's a good way to vent.

You know, when I think the Sox need pitching help, Freddy Garcia doesn't cut it. Bartolo Colon doesn't cut it. Jose Contreras (who pitched a GREAT game today - 8 IP, 1 Hit) probably won't cut it. Clayton Richard won't cut it. Why can't they get some consistent pitchers for the 4th and 5th rotation spots?

Okay guys, I've called on you to play the role of GM before, so I'm going to ask for some help on this one...
I am 5-4 in a fantasy keeper league, in which each team keeps $100 worth of players based on a dollar amount prior to the season. I just wanted to preface the following trade with that blurb.
Anyway, the owner of a floundering 2-7 team just sent me the following trade, which, if accepted, would be the largest trade ever accepted in the eight years I've been in this league.
I WOULD ACQUIRE: Brian McCann, C - Atlanta Braves Carlos Lee, OF - Houston Astros Gary Sheffield, OF - New York Mets Gavin Floyd, SP - Chicago White Sox Brian Fuentes, RP - Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Frank Francisco, RP - Texas Rangers
HE WOULD ACQUIRE: Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C - Texas Rangers Jay Bruce, OF - Cincinnati Reds Nyjer Morgan, OF - Pittsburgh Pirates Jason Heyward, OF - Atlanta Braves (currently in minors) Matt Lindstrom, RP - Florida Marlins Jason Motte, RP - St. Louis Cardinals
Okay, digest all that. Now, what do you think? From the outset, it looks like I'm picking up the best player in the deal (Lee), making a big upgrade at catcher, picking up a pretty reliable young starting pitcher and grabbing two above-average closers. Also, I'm getting Gary Sheffield, who I would probably end up cutting when Aramis Ramirez returns from the DL in July.
But I'm losing my entire "farm system". Saltalamacchia, Bruce, Morgan, Heyward, Lindstrom and Motte all have very bright futures ahead of them, all are on the rise, and every player, with the exception of Bruce, would probably cost less than $10 to keep.
I'm torn. What do you think I should do? I have 48 hours to decide.

I'd say keep what you got. You're 5-4 now, is adding those players going to propell you to the top or not? I don't think so.

According to the Boston Herald, the Red Sox have inquired about possibly trading for...*takes deep breath*...Oakland's Orlando Cabrera, Washington's Christian Guzman, Milwaukee's J.J. Hardy, Pittsburgh's Jack Wilson, Texas' Omar Vizquel, San Diego's Adrian Gonzalez and Washington's Adam Dunn.

I'd kill for Adrian Gonzalez...but I still don't know if this Mets team can contend or if it's better to wait for 2010. By the way, I don't think A-Gonz will be traded.

Clayton Richard won't cut it. Why can't they get some consistent pitchers for the 4th and 5th rotation spots? According to pitching coach Don Cooper, there is no "#1, #2, etc" spots. Whoever is starting that day is the #1 starter. The pitching line-up is in a constant state of flux. If there's a day off or a doubleheader, sometimes they'll bump Buerhle back a day (he still has arm issues he's not telling anybody about). Or, if Gavin Floyd had a rough outing, they'll bump him back and bring in Richard to start early. Keep in mind that Contreras wasn't even expected to be back before August. His main problem before his recent Minor League stint was that he was tipping pitches. If he throws even half as well as he did last night, he'll be fine. Colon isn't that bad, the team's offense just seems to fall asleep on days he pitches. And he only has one pitch: slow fastball that doesn't move. And Clayton Richard is a nice little surprise. I don't like them signing Freddy, but he is (after all) Ozzie's second cousin. They could somewhat fix the rotation by using D.J. Carrasco as a starter; the kid earned it. (They're also buying time to when Aaron Poreda is expected to make the jump to the big club sometime this summer.)

He's an astronomical upgrade over Lugo at shortstop and he's one of the best contact hitters and bunters in the National League, plus he's got above average speed. Don't expect any power from him, though.

Don't expect any power from him, though. To be fair, a dead corpse is an upgrade over Lugo at SS. I'm not big on Guzman (poor defense, doesn't know how to take a walk), but he would be an improvement and it probably wouldn't take much to acquire him. If I had my pick, I'd love to see J.J. Hardy in Boston. He's struggling at the plate but a lot of that has to do with bad luck (his BABIP is over 50 points lower than last season). And he's got above average range defensively. To be perfectly honest, any of those guys listed would be an improvement in one area or another. When Jed Lowrie comes back, Lugo is probably getting cut. The hatred for this man has reached a whole new level this year. You can just tell Francona is tired of having him around.

Also, Brad Lidge to the DL. Ryan Madson finally gets a shot. To be fair, a dead corpse is an upgrade over Lugo at SS. As opposed to a living one? I'm not too sure I'd want a zombie at SS. He'd spend his entire time in the infield trying to eat Pedroia's brains.
