So I've been meaning to play a good wrestling game lately, and I've had enough of the Smackdown series for awhile. For almost a year, I've been hearing nothing but great things about Fire Pro Wrestling Returns, which is only out for the PS2. For those not familiar, Fire Pro Wrestling Returns is a 2D wrestling game (GOOD 2D might I add, very detailed) with a unique (and somewhat hard) gameplay, a DEEP Edit Mode, and over 800 wrestlers (that's right, 800) in total.
Anyways, I'm not familiar with the Fire Pro series, and I wanted the opinions of those who have played it FPWR; is this game REALLY that fun that everyone is making it out to be? If so, should I buy it?

I happen to think so, it's easily one of the best wrestling games I've ever played.
You've got 500 slots for CAWs, and there are sites that provide huge packs of existing wrestlers of all kinds, whether you're looking for 80's/90's WWF, WCW, Attitude era, Puro, whatever you want, it probably exists.
And the gameplay itself is very awesome. It's a far cry from the Smackdown games, as it's definitely more puro focused. The matches have way different pacing, and a finisher isn't always a sure deal.
Just generally speaking it's an awesome series and I definitely highly recommend it. It's super cheap, too. Check out some Youtube vids if you're not entirely sure.

I wanted to like it, I tried to like it, I did everthing I could to give it a chance. And found myself simulating more matches than actually playing them. It's an alright game, and fun, but just not up to level of hooplah that some of the fans would make you think.
I say, avoid the hype and the people who hate it. And just get it and try it out for yourself, it's cheap enough. That way you dan't have to deal with the widly varying opinions.

I enjoyed it. It's a unique global wrestling experience, loved the ability to import others and have a ridiculously deep roster.

Yeah, it's quite enjoyable. I haven't really played against the computer, as I've had fun simulating matches by playing them myself or having the computer simulate the matches. Just fun times. Also, yeah, the edit page is deep. Not real deep, but deep enough that you can create almost anybody.

I make my own CAWs that aren't based on any real wrestler (except one I've been making for years who's obviously based on Misawa, named "Diamond Seiji"), and have noticed that the game's AI routines favors big men with power moves over all else, so I can't put anyone up against my biggest hard-hitting power move guy ("Big Perv") unless I want them to lose horribly... Even so, it's pretty awesome that I'll be able to make every CAW idea I've ever had, even if their look and moveset aren't 100% possible to carry over, it still comes close enough, and having them all in the same place is worth those minor sacrifices.

I wouldn't even know where to find a game like this these days. I actually found a copy at K-Mart a few months back. Wish I would have picked it up. Only 20 bucks, too.

My PS2 doesn't even work anymore, can't they have a 360 version?

I adore it, solely because the CAW allows me to make nearly anyone- that combined with the numerous slots makes it so that I don't have to fret over who's missing from the latest Smackdown game. I can just add them to my WWE section.

I'm a huuuuuge fan of the Fire Pro franchise, and I love this game. I still prefer it to the Smackdown games, though those are fun too. I don't sim matches much, but I love playing the game with a couple friends - 6-man elimination tags are awesome.

So is their a site that lists HOW to create the Edits that come in these Edit packs because I don't have an Action Replay and it would be cool if their was a site with a giant list of formulas somewhere because I suck at making them on my own and all the sites I've found have a really limited selection of formulas.

Always wanted to play it too but found no real way of buying it on PAL versions in the UK without paying silly money on ebay

It's a great game. It's extremely fun, if not maybe a tad daunting. There is A LOT of things going on in this game. Me and a friend of mine spent 4 hours making the ECW logo. Not to mention creating essentially everyone we could think of in the history of the business. It's a lot of fun tho, and for the price it's well worth it.

That's the one thing that I don't like about FPR. It doesn't have ladder matches. But then, I don't think Puroresu had many ladder matches. That, and it doesn't have the Vertebreaker, the Welcome to Chicago, Mother F***er (double underhook backbreaker), or the Colt .45. But que sera, sera. Still at least a 9/10. If you find it for $20, it's a deal. If you find it somewhere for even less than that, it's a steal.

Its pretty good. I still haven't gotten the controls down, and I can't even beat the computer on level 2. I liked it, but I didn't have the patience for it.
