When I was living in Hawaii, I was actually very close to purchasing a replica Kill Bill samauri sword, but backed out at the last minute due to not wanting to try to pass customs with a friggin sword. When asked why I wanted one so bad, I responded "Just in case someone ever robs my house." Kudos to you, Johns Hopkins student. You lived the dream BTW: How sick is it that we hear about someone dying at the hands of a samauri sword and everyone goes "Awesome! Epic! Cool!"? Hilarious.

God Bless America. If this was Canada, this kid would be in jail for a good 10 years for manslaughter. This kid needs to be sent to jail for Manslaughter. Killing is killing in my eyes.

Not when it's justifiable homicide. If it comes to a jury trial and he can establish that his life was in danger, he can be found not guilty by reason of self defense. As I'm reading it, that may be the case. If somebodsy attacks you, you are allowed to respond, and if you have a katana, well what are you supposed to do with it? As the old saying goes... Tis a knavish highwayman that would use fistcusts in a fight with a gentleman wielding a sword!

I'm sorry but yeah it wasn't right for the guy to break into his home and he has a right to defend himself, but murder? Absolutely not.

If I'm in my home, and someone attacks me, I'm going to use whatever I have handy to defend myself, be it a gun or a sword or even just some nearby blunt object. And if my attacker died during the course of my defense... well, that'd be regrettable. But it wouldn't have happened had he not come and attacked me in my home, and better him than me if one of us is going to be hurt or killed.

Maybe if he would have slashed the guy 100 times or so you'd have a manslaughter case (maybe...I'd still acquit him if I were on the jury). But in this case he slashed him once after getting attacked in his own home. Sucks (I guess, maybe, well I'm indifferent myself) that the guy died, but that's the risk you take when you break into someone's house and attack them.

End of story. And I can't help but laugh at it. I just hope the student isn't too traumatized. But face it, that was bad ass! There can be only one.

THIS...IS...AWESOME. Okay, I've fantasized for years about owning a samurai sword and using it to protect myself when I'm walking the streets of D.C. at night. But this seals it: I NEED to make that fantasy a reality. Besides, society as a whole needs to start bringing swords back again to replace guns. Using swords requires skill and dexterity, rather than just letting you shoot any random person. "Not as clumsy and random as a blaster. An elegant weapon, from a more...civilized age." Exactly. ANYONE can use a gun. As long as the safety is off, just point and pull the trigger. No skill whatsoever. A knife or a sword? You need months, if not years of training just to know the basics to the weapon, and an entire lifetime to master it.

Just like when I watched "The Weatherman" and Cage's character started to walk around with a bow. I figured, if I saw somebody walk around with a gun..... there's a good chance they wouldn't know how to use it and could miss me. But if someone walked around with a bow, I wouldn't mess with them because to pick something that random, they have to be damn good with it.

The burglar had 29(!!!) prior arrests and was just released days before? Look, I don't know how I stand with the killing part but, if you're going to rob people that friggin' often, you're putting yourself at risk for something like this to happen.

I don't see anything "awesome" or "epic" about this.
A guy lost his life, even if he was an offender.
Then again, he lunged forward so he kinda had it coming.

You better believe I'll be sure to post if I ever have to use my sword of Omens replica sword to stop someone. I think the Sword of Omens would be better. I mean you could get sight beyound sight to find them before they found you. I do not think however it would beat Voltron's Blazing Sword, which I happen to own a replica of. I also made gloves, boots and a hood made to look like the lions, oh Halloween 2004 how I loved you. Also, normally during a struggle accidental injuries could happen. I'm sure the kid did not mean to kill him, but if a burglar jumped at me I wouldn't think to defend myself but not kill him, I would think defend myself so I don't die. I'm not going to go easy on someone trying to kill me because I don't want to kill them. Survival of the fittest or in this case, speak softly and carry a samurai sword.

What should he have done? Given the guy a stern talking-to? Cause that obviously what I said. Actually, it sort of is. If it's not justified to respond with force someone who has broken into your home and lunged at you, there's really nothing you can do to protect yourself. If the facts of the case are as reported, he would been the victim had he not defended himself. Saying he should go to jail for manslaughter is saying that it's not right to defend yourself if someone is attacking you. So what are his options at the time? In the heat of the moment trying to disable him some other way may not be an option, and may not be any better to prevent his death. Now, if the facts were that the guy was on the ground and the kid stabbed him, it's murder. But the story stated that he was attacked when he lunged at the kid.
