OK you asked for it. 1. The nature of our universe dictates that death is the reward for the stupid, and careless. Doesn't matter if you ride without a seat belt, play around train tracks, or break into another persons home and try to attack them. If you go out of your way to participate in risky activities then you have earned the consequences of your actions. 2. Many people collect swords for display, so its not uncommon for anyone especially a college student to have one readily accessible. When a person believes their life could be in danger why wouldn't they grab a weapon if it was right there? 3. OK then smart guy. A strange man has broken into your house, and is lunging at you. What do you do? Remember you only have split seconds to react. 4. I seriously doubt the vast majority of crimes in the US are perpetrated by vengeful home owners trying to protect themselves during a home invasion. (Fun fact. Every one of John Wayne Gacy's victims was an unlucky home invader). You pretty much covered what I was going to say except for one thing. He mentioned the crime rate, well, I'd like him to know that EVERY reported crime goes into the crime rate. Even if it's something as insignificant as someone stealing your Best of the 80's CD from your car while the window was down or a police officer taking in a college student for underage drinking. Also, I own swords and not a baseball bat. I guess that makes me a blood thirsty maniac. AFAIK, the rate of violent crimes in the US has actually gone down in the last 10-15 years.

Truth be told, considering how many homes this burglar had broken into in the past, he's lucky he wasn't shot long before this.
Consider this story. My cousin grew up in rural Indiana. When he was a teenager he snuck out of the house one night at around 1:00 AM to go meet up with his girlfriend. He crouched down outside her window and started tapping on the window. What he didn't know was that she was staying at her grandparents' that weekend. So he kept tapping louder and louder until he accidentally woke up her father. The poor guy was scared out of his wits because he thought someone was breaking into his home to rob and/or harm himself and his family. He grabbed his gun, snuck outside, approached him from behind, and came within an inch of killing him before my cousin happened to turn at the last second and the father was able to recognize him as his daughter's boyfriend before he pulled the trigger. The guy then called my uncle and very frankly told him just how close he came to shooting his son. My uncle drove over to the guy's house, picked up my cousin, and when they got home took a belt to his backside. Long story short, breaking into someone's home is an incredibly stupid thing to do.

Death is not a just reward for burglary, or even jumping someone. Who the f*** carries around a sword anyway? A homicidal maniac, I say. Just use a baseball bat if you must whack someone over the head. "But, but,, he was breaking and entering, and he totally jumped that student and..." "Blah, blah, blah", I say. That's not worthy of death is it? Blood-thirsty animals. All of you.Makes me wonder really, well not really, that the crimerate in the good-ol' US of A is so high, when this mentality is so common. Flame away all you wan't, I don't care. Best compliment I've received in days. ;D

You know, I think maybe he acted a little too severely with regard to his situation. I would have no problem in doing what the kid did if a burglar broke into mine, but I have a wife and baby in the house.
If I was living alone and saw someone scampering away with my xbox and laptop under one arm (pretty certain a college student is not going to have anything of great value lying around) , I'd rather call the cops and claim a better one from my home insurance than have to live with hacking a man to death on my concience.

Cause that obviously what I said. Forget, I'm bailing before this gets stupid. Too late. The dude died at his own carelessness. End of story. And I can't help but laugh at it. I just hope the student isn't too traumatized. But face it, that was bad ass! There can be only one. YES!

The kid gave the burglar a chance to just be arrested, and to stay while the cops were called, when the burglar LUNGED at him.
When you lunge at an armed person, your life is forfeit. You'll find virtually no one who will disagree with the notion that you have a right to not be killed in the night by a goddamn burglar if you can prevent it.

www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5i_yk3DgiZ_JmZl1SSrXRbdqjZN9QD9AP65382update to the story. Basically, his home was robbed, police came and didn't do anything. He grabbed the sword and began to look around, found the burglar who was still in the home. He threatened to call the police and the burglar lunged. He swung once and called for help. That once was enough to kill him. So the idea that swinging one time when you're backed against a wall at a person who is coming at you (and obviously not wanting to sit down and chat with you) is excessive baffles me.
