Week 3 Quizzes are now out. I apologize in advance for that one particularly obscure question, but maybe some of you will surprise me by getting it right. Bottom 2 leave this week (along with whoever doesn't send theirs in)

The deadline has come and gone, and unfortunately, this means that we must say goodbye to Mickey & Sylvia, who did not get the answers in on time. The bottom two will also go home this week. The top scoring contestant with a near perfect score of 14.5 pts is: Ishmeal Insane Coming in second place by just .5pt is: "Statman" PKSandman Rounding out the top three with 11pts is: Muskrat: A Platypus Warrior!!! These contestants are also safe this week: The Ravishing One, Mr. Lariat! - 10pts "Franchise" Ox Baker - 9 pts Jazzman - 8 pts Sharpy Snow - 8 pts RX-78-2 - 7 pts That means that out bottom three this week is: Grendel, Ani and pegasuswarrior. The lowest scoring contestant with a score of 2.5pts is: Ani, I'm sorry, the contest ends for you. That leaves Grendel and pegasuswarrior. Unfortunately, this was a heartbreakingly close one as one of you stays in the competition with 6pts, and one of you exits with 5.5 pts. The difference came down to half of one question. The 3rd person going home tonight is: pegasuswarrior, really tough break for you this round. To the three of you going home this week, pegasuswarrior, Ani and Mickey and Sylvia, thanks for playing. I'll leave you with a bit of culture this week, with an academic interpretation of early Japanese electronica: Answers will be up later today.

Lasted longer then I thought though.

Week 3 Answers: 1) 80s Music: Siobhan Fahey left Bananarama in 1988 to form what group?Shakespeare’s Sister. Stay: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eXw47qb4U02) 80s Music: Aretha Franklin had one song in the 80s that hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. What was the name of the song?“I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)” a duet with George Michael that hit #1 in 1987. “Freeway of Love” reached #3. 3) Movie Music: Which song from Dick Tracy (1990) went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song?“Sooner or Later” which was sung in the film by Madonna. This was also at the height of her trashy sexpot phase, so she performed a rather burlesque version of the song on the Oscar telecast. This prompted host Billy Crystal to introduce her as the “NC-17 portion of our really big show.” This was also the year she attended the show with Michael Jackson as her date. 4) Movie Music: “Mona Lisa” won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 1950. What movie did it come from? Captain Carey, USA. It shocked me how many of you got this right: www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxEmnxiUz8w5) Classic Rock: In a very bizarre story, this artist unsuccessfully sued himself for plagiarism. Who was the artist and what song was involved in the suit?John Fogerty, formerly of Creedence Clearwater Revival. The song involved in the suit was “Old Man Down the Road” (or “Run Through the Jungle”). As the story goes, when Fogerty left his band and record company, he also gave up the rights to any music he recorded as part of the group to owner Saul Zaentz. When he recorded the song “Old Man Down the Road” in 1985, he was sued by Zaentz for sounding too much like “Run Through the Jungle”, a song Fogerty had no legal rights to. In the lawsuit, Fogerty was named both a defendant (for unauthorized use of Zaentz’s “intellectual property”) and a plaintiff (since he wrote the song to start with). The case was eventually decided in Fogerty’s (the defendant) favor. “Old Man Down the Road”: www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Lf0pQoRgFQ“Run Through the Jungle”: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbI0cMyyw_M6) Classic Rock: Richie Havens was the opening act of the original Woodstock. Who played second?Future VH-1 Original Movie subjects Sweetwater. They were originally slated to be the opening act, but due to some unspecified problems in the band, Richie Havens was sent out first. Why O Why: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lq9eTftmc6c7) 90s Music: Tanya Donelly was part of the group Throwing Muses in the 80s. What were the two bands she led in the 90s?The Breeders and Belly. The Breeders – “Cannonball”: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7AsId-qVIb4Belly – “Feed the Tree”: www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpBlFNGXHsw8) 90s Music: Before forming Filter, Richard Patrick was a guitarist for which band?Nine Inch Nails. I can’t imagine why he would leave a band that gave him so much artistic freedom. 9) Classical Music: What was the “surprise” in Haydn’s “Surprise Symphony?”There is a sudden loud chord in movement two which is never repeated. If you mentioned something like that, you got credit. However, if you mentioned an instrument that was not in the piece (piano, vocals, saxomaphone), I couldn’t give you credit. Movement 2: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uq78fAgTevs10) Classical Music: What was the name of Beethoven’s only opera?Fidelio, which is actually a pretty cool opera: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MktL_qQqRs 11) Beatles: What famous singer recorded a song titled “Ringo, I Love You” when she was a teenager? That would be young Cherilyn Sarkisian, better known to us as Cher: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rucS5DX8IRA12) Beatles: Who was the first Beatle to release a solo album?George Harrison, who released Wonderwall Music in 1968. “Red Lady Too”: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3AX-k8WUco13) Here’s the Lyric: “You're Mars, calling up Neptune's daughter”“Painting by Chagall” by The Weepies: www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-IIkLpZiUo14) Here’s the Lyric: “From their coral graves, they rise up when darkness falls”“Nightmares by the Sea” by Jeff Buckley : www.youtube.com/watch?v=un9VmOSzzCs 15) GRAB BAG: Canadian rock group The Tragically Hip wrote “Antares” for which figure skater?4-time World Champion Kurt Browning, perhaps the greatest figure skater to never win an Olympic medal, but that’s a debate for a different thread (actually, more like a different board). The song and routine: www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Tcy--wXe5w

And the deadline has passed. That means that The Ravishing One, Mr. Lariat! and Sharpy Snow are both gone from the competition this week. Sorry guys. The results for Week 4: This week's winner with a perfect score of 15: "Statman" PKSandman This week's runner up with a score of 13: Ishmeal Insane These people are also safe: "Franchise" Ox Baker: 11.5 pts Jazzman: 11 pts Muskrat: A Platypus Warrior!!!: 9.5 pts That means that our bottom two this week is RX-78-2 and Grendel, who each have 7 pts. You two are also out of the competition. Thanks for playing Grendel, RX-78-2, The Ravishing One, Mr. Lariat! and Sharpy Snow. There will either be one or two more rounds before the championship round, depending on how many quizzes I get next week.
