I like Beltre as a more affordable 3B option. Terrific defense and his bat should be improved now that he's (a) playing away from Safeco, and (b) recovered from shoulder surgery. Beltre scares me for two reasons. He's been very injury prone lately, and the rumors of past steroid use. It seems as though the Phillies are looking at everyone who has ever played 3B as a possible replacement for Pedro Feliz. GM Ruben Amaro is reportedly looking at Chone Figgins, Adrian Beltre, Placido Polanco, and Mark Derosa. If I were him, I'd sign Polanco to play 3B everyday and Derosa to be a super-sub. He can play several positions and can give Utley, Rollins, and Polanco some rest during the season. I don't want Polanco anywhere near a Phillies uniform. That will give me nightmares. What was wrong with the Placido Polanco era in Philly? He's a solid clubhouse guy who hits for a good average and doesn't strike out. Something that would look much better batting in the 7 hole for the Phils than Pedro "K or Double Play" Feliz

He never seemed to be that good to me whenever I watched. I'd rather see them go after Figgins, so that way Victorino or Rollins can move to the 7th hole and get some speed on in front of Ruiz, but he might end up being too expensive.

Why do people hate Varitek so much?
Regardless, the Sox need someone to compliment Jason Bay, should they be able to keep him.

Why do people hate Varitek so much? He's a terrible baseball player both offensively and defensively. It's pretty simple, actually.

Now that I have played MLB 2K9 for a a week or so, I have some comments. First off, definately worth the $10 I paid. I took advice from one of you and used classic pitching, which worked wonders. Generally my games are competitive, which I like. One thing I always hated about Madden is that beating the computer by 118 points is all too easy. So I like getting some competition out of a sports game. Problems though, sometimes the fielding just does whatever it wants. Sometimes but not often, my guy will just stand there and let a routine fly ball drop. Second thing on fielding, the computer always robs home runs unless they are long enough to clear the fence by a lot. They will even have a 70 CF who will make an impossible circus catch. My 99 rated RF will just stand there and watch a ball sail over his head, not even attempting to make a jump. Second, all the 2K games have the Skybox. Usually, you have a lot of neat stuff to unlock. Not in this game. In MLB 2K9, you have a handful of jerseys and two stadiums. Also you have darts and air hockey. But why would I want to play those, at all. Finally, there are some little things. The record books don't record records. Like at all. I broke the RBIs record with Arod and it didn't record it. It doesn't even list home run records. I broke the single season record in doubles with Freddy Sanchez and the game didn't notice. Also these accomplishments did nothing to raise revenue for my team. So I have my Yankees franchise. I brought up a first basemen through the farm system. And he is wearing #3. I know thats a small thing but it makes to me. Most sports games don't take the time to retire numbers or recognize retired numbers. It wouldn't take that much to put that in a game but they never do it. Finally, you will have guys rated 100 sitting around on free agency. You can have a team full of players rated 100 and that is with a payroll of 80 mil. Madden is usually guilty of this too. It should be hard to build a championship team. Players rated 100 should be rare. Even players rated about 90 should be uncommon. There isn't a lot of strategy to putting together a winning team. NBA 2K7 and NFL 2K5 were a lot better about this because if you weren't careful you would end up in salary cap purgatory. But I do like the analog stick hitting system. Although the batters eyes is unrealiable at best. I like timing the swing and putting strategy into working the count and what not. I like the Inside Pulse scouting reports, which if you buy the catcher will call the pitches for you. I like that a lot. These may not be new because I haven't bought a baseball game in 2K6 and I probably won't under I get a new system. I like 2K9 for the most part, but I wouldn't like it so much if I had paid more than $10 for it.

Pirates are willing to trade Ryan DoumitShocking, right? I've said over and over that the only reason he didn't get traded last year was his injury. They apparently want to create a new team with new players that will...hopefully...be around a while.

All in favor of a 3-year moratorium on all Hall of Fame inductions so that the most knowledgeable and respected broadcasters, writers, historians, and sabermetricians can be assembled into a Blue Ribbon panel assigned with the task of sorting through and organizing the extant Hall of Fame, say "Aye."
Aye!

Rich Harden coming to Seattle could be very good. It'd be nice to get an experienced pitcher in the rotation, since we lost Washburn and it doesn't look like Bedard will be in Mariner blue next year(thank god).
Other Mariner news, Jack Wilson signed a 2 year deal. No official word on the cash, but I've heard "more than $8MM" and "$10MM", so between those two numbers would be a pretty good guess.
If Seattle thinks they have a legit shot at signing Joe Crede, then that'll be so awesome, and will make me instantly forget about Beltre. Our left side INF(Crede and Wilson) would be great, as would our outfield(Gutierrez, Ichiro, and as of now Endy Chavez), fielding wise. Really, its catcher and our right-side INF that need improvements concerning leather.
Didn't see it mentioned here, but Griffey signed a 1 year extension. Not sure what that'll do to the Matsui talks.
The Mariners could also be interested in John Lackey, "depending on the Market". If he can be had at a good price, the Mariners will make a "big push" to sign him.
If Lackey and Harden's deals fall through, Doug Davis could be a cheap substitute.
And this happened a few days back, but Russell Branyan rejected the Mariners 1 year w/ a 1 year option contract, because he wants a guaranteed 2 years. He wants to sign with Seattle, but would would be willing to test the free agent market if he's not offered what he wants by the M's.
yeah, and that's enough for now.

As a Cubs fan I would be more than happy to accept the compensatory draft pick for Seattle signing away the Cubs' Level B free agent. Harden has only hit 150 innings in his career once (189.2 in 2004) and in his career has amassed Games Started totals of 13, 31, 19, 9, 4, 25, and 26. If you really want to overpay a 4th starter who is guaranteed to go on the DL for at least three weeks per season and otherwise require 5+ days rest multiple times throughout the season, have at him.

I swear that the Pirates and the Nationals exist just to bring up good players so they can sign with other teams. It's like the ECW of MLB. I was REALLY into Bonds and Bonilla back in the 90s. I wish Pittsburgh would be a better franchise than it has been recently.

I'd just prefer to have some more veteran starters. Plus, you have to remember that he'll be moving away from the hitter's division that is the NL Central(what with Wrigley, Miller, Great American and PNC Park) into a very pitcher friendly ballpark in Safeco.

www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/11/olney-on-lackey-astros-rangers-doumit-carroll.htmlAccording to ESPN's Buster Olney, Seattle has moved into place as Lackey's potential home for next season. In just about 1 year's time, Jack Z and Co. look like they can finally have a legitimate baseball team on their hands. Thank god they quit trying to use the old AL West strategy(keeping your payroll as microscopic as possible) and are looking to spend some big money.

Plus, you have to remember that he'll be moving away from the hitter's division that is the NL Central(what with Wrigley, Miller, Great American and PNC Park) into a very pitcher friendly ballpark in Safeco. It doesn't matter where he's pitching or against whom. He's a two-pitch (fastball/change) strikeout/walk pitcher who was unhittable in the NL Central in 2008 post-trade and had awful home/good road splits all of 2009. His stuff isn't in question. Never has been. Many people think he's got as good pure stuff as a starter as the top tier of starters in MLB. The question is if he can stay on the field. Yes, comparing him to Bedard is apt. Neither can stay on the field. But are you really willing to see a promising Mariners rejuvenation blow up because of four years and $45 million to an injury guarantee? EDIT: Oh yeah - Jim Hendry wants to manufacture a deal for Curtis Granderson. The Tigers are probably more interested in a prospect package that will get them ahead for when the bad money (Mags, D-Train, etc.) comes off the books. But the bad money plus Miguel Cabrera and Verlander are guaranteed something like $75 million in 2010. So the Cubs package would likely include a pile of inexpensive veterans or players with MLB experience, plus one or two top prospects. The reason for the big steaming pile of meh is that Detroit needs to fill out a 25-man roster with inexpensive components without starting the clock on their own prospects' options. As far as experienced MLB players with affordable contracts, the Cubs have IF Aaron Miles, Jeff Baker and Mike Fontenot, OF-1B Micah Hoffpauir, UTIL Jake Fox, RHP Aaron Heilman... The top prospects are SS Starlin Castro, SS Hak-Ju Lee, 3B Josh Vitters, CF Brett Jackson, SP Andrew Cashner, and SP Chris Carpenter. There might also be talk of sending Milton Bradley to Detroit in the deal, since Detroit needs a DH/part-time outfielder and the Cubs would be able to eat much of the contract.

Yes I am, because I had to sit through countless starts by 'The Next Great Mariner Pitcher' 3 out of 5 days over the past few years. Its a huge gamble, granted, but as of now, our AAA roster isn't bursting at the seams with capable starting pitchers and Seattle needs to fill 2 holes left by veterans.
