So the Mets are going to waste money paying a guy to play out of position just to keep him from the Phillies? Not necessarily the case. While he has been predominantly at 3rd Base the last couple of years in Anaheim, he's had nearly 100 starts at 2B and well over 100 in the outfield. So, he plays a pretty good position wherever he plays.

Jim Riggleman will be named manager of the Nationals, according to Fox Sports' Jim Bowden.
Riggleman beat out Bobby Valentine for the position.

When a club is willing to eat 10 million on a contract for a player, doesn't that send up a red flag to the guys potential new team? Ron Washington knows what he's getting, though. Texas likes Milton. The issue was that Texas and Tampa Bay were willing to give him $6 million per year after 2008. Then Hendry gave him a back-loaded $30 million for 3 years. So the Cubs are essentially willing to say, you know what, we'll pay the portion of Bradley's remaining contract that exceeds his current market value. The Cubs seem committed to moving Kosuke Fukudome back to right field in 2010. Byrd would fill their need for a CF. Reed Johnson wants to come back and is popular in the clubhouse; if he'd be happy with 200 AB, I don't know. Prospects Sam Fuld and Tyler Colvin, along with Bobby Scales, Jake Fox and Micah Hoffpauir, would be in the running for reserve roles. So Taguchi likely won't be back.

According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, both the Mets and Phillies have shown interest in free agent Chone Figgins. If I were the GM of the Mets I'd go after starting pitching. Because after Johan, they don't have much. Chone Figgins is a very good player, but he's not the missing piece of a playoff run for the Mets.

True, but this is one hell of an upgrade from Luis Castillo. If Reyes, gets healthy, this would be a solid one-two punch in the lineup. Still nowhere where I want them to be. Take a page form the Yankees' book of suceess. If you have money, spend it. Also get Daniel Murphy off my team. Delgado>>> Murphy any day

To the dismay of everyone in Boston DAMN STRAIGHT! Dont dare get me wrong, I will forever be greatful to Varitek for what he did over the years. He did play a role in both title wins, no doubt about it. The guy has been a class act for the most part. I respect the hell out of him. That being said, the man simply lost a few steps and just isnt what he used to be. He's a backup catcher at best, and everyone other than him seems to know it

That being said, the man simply lost a few steps and just isnt what he used to be. And the award for understatement of the year goes to... Perhaps being a part-time catcher will keep him healthy throughout the season and he'll at least be competent with the bat. Then again, after V-Mart joined the team and Tek's playing time went down, his numbers got even worse. Perhaps that had to do with him being unable to accept the fact that he was no longer the #1 catcher, or (more likely) he just really, really sucks. That said, there isn't much else out there. They can try an internal option like Kottaras or Brown, but neither of them will be significantly better over the course of a season. And there isn't much to choose from in FA.

It seems as though the Phillies are looking at everyone who has ever played 3B as a possible replacement for Pedro Feliz.
GM Ruben Amaro is reportedly looking at Chone Figgins, Adrian Beltre, Placido Polanco, and Mark Derosa.
If I were him, I'd sign Polanco to play 3B everyday and Derosa to be a super-sub. He can play several positions and can give Utley, Rollins, and Polanco some rest during the season.

I like Beltre as a more affordable 3B option. Terrific defense and his bat should be improved now that he's (a) playing away from Safeco, and (b) recovered from shoulder surgery.

FOXSports.com cites major league sources who say that the Nationals are interested in Adam Everett or Alex Gonzalez to play shortstop.
According to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com, Pirates GM Neal Huntington will explore the mid-tier free agent market more aggressively this winter than in the past.
Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports that the Royals are talking about a trade that would send second baseman Alberto Callaspo to the Dodgers for catcher A.J. Ellis.
