The older I get, the less I seem to care about the Oscars. It's not worth getting irritated that people like Sandra Bullock are nominated.

I always care more about when the right people/movies get honored, and who knows by dumb luck, actually win. My predictions (plus two upsets) I'll post later today.

sure thing.
oh and FYI, Oscars tonight will have a John Hughes tribute segment.
Too bad the honorary Oscars got moved off TV all together, or else we could have had a special montage tribute for Roger Corman. That would have been the socks.

I'm not as interested this year. Seems like every major category except Best Actress is a dead giveaway.

I'm not as interested this year. Seems like every major category except Best Actress is a dead giveaway. acutally best film could go to a couple films. The thing most people aren't talking about is how best film is working this year. In the past you had to vote for what you consider the best film to be, now they're doing it comparatively. So basically people are ranking each film and assigning points to them. So I wouldn't be surprised if the best film this year is an upset (that's why I bet that up will win in the prediction thread)

If the point based voting system ends with something like District 9 or Up winning best picture I gurantee that I will be a one and done experment. Not that I think anything other than Avatar or maybe The Hurt Locker will win. But still there is a chance of a median 3-5 place vote getter gettting enough 1st or 2nd place ballots to upset. A slim chance, but a chance.

I just have a feeling that most of the oscar voters put up in their top 3 thus giving it the most votes.

Oh yeah I picked District 9 because I think it is must likely going to be the 10th place finisher. So it's winning would be a huge shock. As for the top 3 vote getters I think you're probably right. But it would be intresting to see an Oscar upset of sorts.

Also, what's the point of expanding the best picture category if it's just gonna be filled with more American multiplex crap?

Also, what's the point of expanding the best picture category if it's just gonna be filled with more American multiplex crap? Ratings. If more films that the general populace has actually seen are nominated, (hypothetically) more people will watch. We'll see if that pays off. I usually try to watch all of the BP nominees before the awards, but this year with the extended field I've only seen half of them. (Avatar, Hurt Locker, Up, District 9, Inglorious Basterds). My pick is Hurt Locker.

Don't they still give the award nonetheless? There must be something online of a video showing Corman accepting his award with his speech.

I always would have liked it if the Oscars had a split in their Best Picture voting by comedy/musical and drama, like the Golden Globes. But maybe that's not as "iconic" a win.

I'm not too bothered who wins tonight but as said Avatar can't win best picture because...it just isn't.....at all. 12 Rounds was better.
And if District 9 somehow wins Best Picture it will have been a good day.

My only real hopes for tonight are that Avatar doesn't win best picture, and neither does Up. Avatar just wasn't as good as some of the other films nominated, and Up is already going to win best animated picture, so it shouldn't even be a nominee for best picture.

Could somebody throw up the major nominations? Such as Picture, Actor/Actress, Supporting, etc?
