I agree that Zoe was incredible in Avatar but can she be realistically nominated by the rulebook? I know her facial expressions were captured by motion capture but the finished design could of been heavily tweaked which could cause controversy of being unfair. Same thing can be said with her body language. Plus her character was 100% CGI in the film. I don't think you can nominate someone by there voicework alone. But ya I really think she did put up a great performance and her performance is seriously underrated and overlooked. Well...it was still performed by an actress in front of a blue screen so I'd consider it an acting nomination. It wasn't like she didn't have much part to do with it at all. I definatly agree that Zoe should be nominated, though. If it wasn't for her, I don't think I'd like Avatar as much as I did (despite the fact that I don't think it's a Best Picture nominee and would have put Star Trek in there instead). Do you think that the actors in recent Robert Zemeckis motion capture films should also be eligible to be nominated if they were good?

the whole acting in front of a blue screen thing is a tricky area. On one hand, you can argue that it was a real person doing the acting, so they deserve credit. On the other hand, you can argue that performances of that nature should be excluded, because they could easily be 'enhanced'(ie: maybe the actor is really shitty at looking sad, so they fix it in post production or something).

Sure, but mocap will be fought to the death by the Academy and starmaking industries, even if all it really is is a very advanced variant of the old Greek dramatic masks. Actors hate anything that obscures the original face.

"we were both born a poor black child" - BEST LINE OF THE NIGHT! I had to explain that line to someone who had never seen "The Jerk."

"we were both born a poor black child" - BEST LINE OF THE NIGHT! I had to explain that line to someone who had never seen "The Jerk." That, and Robin Williams' line about balls being handled in Hollywood were the highlights of the night. And I'm so glad other people got "The Jerk" reference too, because the people I was with didn't.

That along with Tina Fey and Downey Jr.'s barbs were the only bright moments.

I might be in the minority here, but two very good films that I was surprised weren't nominated for anything aside from the minor "sci fi" awards were Star Trek and Watchmen. Watchmen didn't even get a costumes nom...I mean, geez Much as I loved Watchmen (it was one of my favorites of last year), it was pretty obvious that it was never going to get nominated. It didn't do spectacularly at the box office or have enough consensus critically to be nominated, not to mention being a hardcore, dark comic book movie. I think in years to come it'll rightfully become a cult classic though. Jackie Earl Haley deserved a nomination, but it's I'm not surprised the movie as a whole was snubbed.

Yeah, I would have been more surprised if Watchmen had won anything. It didn't make back it's production budget and didn't have exceptional reviews. It fell flat in the midst of summer blockbusters. Star Trek was never going to get nominated for a major award. It was a standard summer blockbuster, and the only surefire way of getting them the attention beyond being a blockbuster is to release them in the winter like Cameron does.
