I could not disagree more with the sentiments of this thread at all. This is pretty much how I feel. I've been a huge fan of his since The Daily Show, and I just think he's absolutely hilarious.

Given how comedy is, this thread is true for just about every comedic actor since... ever.
How many "different" characters did Groucho play, again? I love the man, but if you're expecting a reinvention, prepare to be disappointed by most entertainment, especially comedy. Nothing inspires irrational anger like comedy that doesn't make you laugh. Drama doesn't have to make you cry or think every time, horror movies don't have to make you scream, but if you don't laugh at a comedy, people lose their minds.

I like Carell. I do. But he keeps playing the same guy So the Adam Sandler argument? By now, I'd call it the Will Ferrell argument.

So the Adam Sandler argument? By now, I'd call it the Will Ferrell argument. Can't. In order to know if he still plays the same character, people have to watch his movies.

So the Adam Sandler argument? By now, I'd call it the Will Ferrell argument. I do appreciate Steve Carell for giving me a break from Will Farrell peddling his shtick every six months.

By now, I'd call it the Will Ferrell argument. Can't. In order to know if he still plays the same character, people have to watch his movies. I liked Old School and Talladega Nights. I remember Will being asked once if he'll continue making "sports" movies by doing a hockey movied and he said something like "The only thing holding me back is learning how to ice skate.....and a script" I'm a fan of his personally. On topic: I'm not annoyed by Steve yet.

So the Adam Sandler argument? By now, I'd call it the Will Ferrell argument. The only laugh Will Ferrell gets out of me these days is when I see the box office returns of his movies. What makes me laugh more is what they are willing to pay him. A 20 and 20 deal for an adaptation of Land of the Lost. They would have had to make 300 million before they even saw a dime on that movie. Adam Sandler has evolved into casting Kevin James in all his movies. That is all. Comedic actors do have their niche. But they have two things in common. They almost all want to eventually take serious roles to gain crediblity which usually doesn't work. And their act gets old after about five years or so.

I'm gonna have to disagree. I think Carell is great, and might be the closest we have right now to a Steve Martin or Bill Murray.

I really have to disagree with the OP here. I actually enjoy watching Mr. Carell and his films, he's a funny guy.

I have to agree. I always don't like people who are put into the same roles repeatedly (well, except maybe Michael Cera). Will Ferrell was losing steam for me until Step Brothers. I f***ing hated Step Brothers. Now I hate Will Ferrell. Steve Carrell was ok at first, but now it's irritating. As for Jim Carrey? I didn't like the Ace Ventura or Mask films. The only comedy of his I've liked was Bruce Almighty (though I haven't seen Yes Man).
And for whomever it was listing Sandler movies where he plays a different character, there's also Reign Over Me.

The guy is very underrated. He was great in Dan in Real Life, and Little Miss Sunshine. The minor part he played in Bruce Almighty was good too.

I'm sorry you feel that way.
I personally am looking forward to another Paul Rudd movie... Steve Carell is icing on the cake.
