Seriously, why does everyone hate this movie so much? Ellen Page gives a very funny, cute charismatic performance as Juno. I thought the story well written and all the characters had their time on screen. I have heard a lot of complaints about Michael Cera. The problem with the complaint is that is it writers fault, not Michael. Rietman needed someone to play a socially akward, weird kid, and Michael is the best choice. I mean come on, you know he is gonna play that type of character. I don't hear anyone complaining about Sam Worthington playing the same character over and over. Also, people complain about the dialogue being bad. You have to consider that this movie is focus around a high school girl. Being in High School right now, I can say that this is the kind of dialogue that we use. Granted, it is not the exact, same dialouge. But in High School, we say over the top things like for example if something bad happen to you, we would say "salty". Plus, if you want to watch real, mindless dialouge, go watch a Tarantino film. Come on, I can't be the only one that really liked this film.

For me, it just didn't entertain. I watch a movie to entertain me, and it failed in that miserably. In the end, I found it boring. But we all have our own opinion, and if you like it, that's fine. And I imagine that this thread will be locked by page 4 because of other such threads in the past.
Anyway, with movies you will have some who like something and some who hate it. There are people on this board who like X Men: The Last Stand, those of us who after getting through their nerd rage find the movie just meh, and those who utterly detest it. It happens.

I guess it's because of the "hippster" dialogue in the movie that bugs people but really that was done in a satirical manner but I don't think people picked that up and sure no one exactly talks like that but to a slight degree they do so Diablo Cody was using hyperbole to prove a point except people not smart enough couldn't pick that up. Also all in all the plot and humor was the best in a comedy in years that wasn't a "dramedy" ie-Little Miss Sunshine, Enternal Sunshine, Sideways and really it was an effective movie in my opinion and had a good soundtrack. Really don't get the hate and I agree Ellen Page was awesome in this movie and I though she deserved to win for best actress.

I thought everyone loved Juno, and had no idea it was hated.
Is it a guy thing?

I really enjoyed it when I saw it, though it's been a couple of years now.
The whole vibe of it really resonated with me, for whatever reasons.
Only disappointment with it was that we didn't get a semi-Arrested Development reunion in it, but that would've gotten in the way of the narrative.

I can see the dialogue really bothering people as it tries to be so esoterically "clever" that it comes off as hipster-ish.
I equate it to people who don't really care for sci-fi because they just use a bunch of made up words for made up alien races and technologies.
So for all the sci-fi fans out there, just pretend Juno is an alien and the hamburger phone is a Next gen Star Trek communicator badge thing. Also, her pregnancy is an alien embryo that is the last of its civilization after its planet exploded and if she aborts it that speices will be extinct. And the indie songs she plays with her boyfriend are the native lullabies from the alien homeworld.
I watched it and a had a few laughs, but it wasn't life-changing or anything.

Should have just aborted the dam kid.
And if you want to see Ellen Page in a great role, Hard Candy.

I never saw the movie, but there is something about Michael Cera I just really don't like. IMO He was okay in "Year One", but as an actor I really don't find him funny.

The dialogue was ridiculous. It was so overly polished and over the top and hipsterish ("Honest to blog"? Go f*** yourself, Diablo Cody) that I couldn't listen to it for more than five minutes without it grating me.
The fact that they gave that hack and Oscar on further cemented my hatred.

I haven't even seen it, and it really goes the same way as Avatar, but I want to watch both of them long after they've run their course of popularity so I can actually enjoy (or hate) them for what they're worth. I've got no real opinion on it till then.

I HATE the dialogue. And it has Michael Cera.....being Michael Cera. I mean, for crying out loud, Michael Cera has been playing the same role since Arrested Development!
Only this year has Cera broken his usual mold, if only slightly. In Youth in Revolt, Cera's alter ego was a nice thing to see, cause it wasn't Cera being Cera, HE ACTUALLY HAD PERSONALITY! And of course Scott Pilgrim looks awesome and Cera doesn't seem to be the usual Cera in that film.

All this vitriol and hate for the dialog, and Diablo Cody, or Ellen Page, and Micheal Cera seems to be clouding the fact that JK Simmons was in this movie......and he kicks ass!
"Next time I see that Bleeker kid I'm going to punch him in the wiener."
That one line had me laughing for like 6 solid minutes. I still laugh about it to this day.

I hate it probably for the most petty reason. But when she said Sonic Youth is just a bunch of noise I said f*** this movie. I told you it was petty but I love sonic youth.

Should have just aborted the dam kid. And if you want to see Ellen Page in a great role, Hard Candy. Seconded, "Smart People" is a close second. It had her and Thomas Hayden Church doing some great great stuff.

If she was just using hyperbole that "people not smart enough" couldn't pick up, she wouldn't have been using the same type of dialogue in her other productions. But that's not the case, you'll hear the same stilted dialogue in the other stuff she writes.
