It would have worked better as a whole I think if Anakin was older in episode 1, say he was fresh out of the academy or something and was paired with ObiWan right at the get go as his real World Master. He would have been able to have Jedi adventures and been good friends with ObiWan right in the first one instead of wasting the 1st one on.... nothing.

It still stinks. People are just blinded by the darker plot turns to notice that it's still a steaming pile of cheese. I also think a lot of people really wanted it to be good, since it was the last chance at redemption for Star Wars. So it was touted as "better than Return of the Jedi!" or even "better than the original Star Wars!" (groan), but really, I find it worse than Episode I.
Yeah, Episode I had a hell of a lot of problems, but they were mostly distilled to two: Jake Lloyd and Jar Jar. There was this general Star Wars-iness to it that really pulled it out of the fire. It relied more on location shooting and traditional special effects intermingled with CGI, so it feels less sterile than the second two. Liam Neeson, despite playing a totally superfluous character that had no right existing, pretty much carried the damn film.
Episode III has more plot holes than any other Star Wars movie, and I just can't come to terms with it. Anakin's fall still isn't believable. He went from an earnest little kid to an angsty teenager to a homicidal rage-aholic to Hitler, making quick leaps to each stage.
It's also painful how hard they try to line things up with the original trilogy in the last twenty minutes of the movie. It's almost as if George Lucas had a checklist of things that needed to get accomplished or explained.
